The Pontiac GTO is an automobile that was manufactured by American automobile manufacturer Pontiac from the 1964 to 1974 model years, and by GM's subsidiary Holden in Australia from the 2004 to 2006 model years. The first generation of the GTO was a muscle car produced in the 1960s and the 1970s. Although there were muscle cars introduced earlier than the GTO,[1][2] the Pontiac GTO is considered by some to have started the trend with all four domestic automakers offering a variety of competing models.[3][4]For the 1964 and 1965 model years, the GTO was an optional package on the intermediate-sized Pontiac LeMans. The 1964 GTO vehicle identification number (VIN) started with 82, while the 1965 GTO VIN started with 237. The GTO became a separate model from 1966 to 1971 (VIN 242...). It became an optional package again for the 1972 and 1973 intermediate LeMans. For 1974, the GTO optional package was offered on the compact-sized Ventura. The GTO was selected as the Motor Trend Car of the Year in 1968.The GTO underwent a few styling changes in 1967. The louver-covered taillights were replaced with eight tail lights, four on each side. Rally II wheels with colored lug nuts were also available in 1967. The GTO emblems located on the rear part of the fenders were moved to the chrome rocker panels. The grill was changed from a purely split grill, to one that shared some chrome.
The 1967 GTO was available in three body styles:Hardtop - 65,176 producedConvertible - 9,517 producedSports coupe - 7,029 producedThe GTO also saw several mechanical changes in 1967. The Tri-Power carburetion system was replaced with a single 4-barrel Rochester Quadrajet carburetor. The 389 cu in (6.4 L) engine received a larger cylinder bore 4.12 in (104.6 mm) for a total displacement of 400 cu in (6.6 L) V8, which was available in three models: economy, standard, and high output. The economy engine used a two-barrel carburetor rather than the Rochester Quadrajet and produced 265 hp (198 kW) at 4,400 rpm and 397 lb⋅ft (538 N⋅m) at 3,400 rpm. The standard engine produced 335 hp (250 kW) at 5,000 rpm; and the highest torque of the three engines at 441 lb⋅ft (598 N⋅m) at 3,400 rpm. The high output engine produced the most power for that year at 360 hp (365 PS; 268 kW) at 5,100 rpm and a maximum torque of 438 lb⋅ft (594 N⋅m; 61 kg⋅m) at 3,600 rpm [13][14][15]. Emission controls were fitted in GTOs sold in California. The 1967 model year required new safety equipment. A new energy-absorbing steering column was accompanied by an energy-absorbing steering wheel, padded instrument panel, non-protruding control knobs, and four-way emergency flashers. A shoulder belt option was also featured, and the brake master cylinder was now a dual reservoir unit with a backup hydraulic circuit. The two-speed automatic transmission was also replaced with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic TH-400, which was equipped with a Hurst Performance dual-gate shifter, called a "his/hers" shifter, that permitted either automatic shifting in "drive" or manual selection through the gears. Front disc brakes were also an option in 1967.[16]The GTO sales for 1967 totaled 81,722.

I used to ride around in one of those. My older brother's friend had a white one, with a red interior. That car screamed! Oh, the memories. I may have to make one like his was. I always love your enthusiasm! Thank you for all you do for the hobby! --Cindi (Granny Glue-Sniffer).

The white pinstripe pops off the red, it was the first thing that caught my eye in the final reveal. This build reminds me of my next door neighbor growing up. He was a serious motorhead and he tricked out his dad's car, engine wise. He'd take it out on weekends and smoke other cars in street drags. He had many an offer to buy the car, but it was his dad's car. The kind of car you pass on the highway and then he decides to pass you and leave you behind in the dust because you underestimated what he had under the hood.

Love the tips and thanks for sharing .. but ... I cannot believe you built a GTO kit that includes the Hurst equipped stickers for the back trunk lid and didn’t put them on .. epic face palm , l o l , just giving you a nice ribbing from a guy who grew up with GTO’s and thanks for paying ahead in this great hobby !

I'm embarrassed to say that I just subscribed sometime last week but have been enjoying your builds and reviews immensely, even the reviews on products that aren't plastic model kit-related. The music you used on this video during the painting segment has been very relaxing to me. Thank you for doing these videos and for keeping the hobby alive.

Hello Chris, This is the second video of yours I have watched. I enjoy your no nonsense banter, and explanations as you progress. A model builder for over five decades, and retired machinist, I appreciate the finer details you offer. I just purchased the '64 4-4-2 hardtop as shown in your other video, and having the MPC '67 GTO, I think I will attempt to start them soon with winter here. Just a few pointers l do is to paint the distributor body cast aluminum as well as the cast part of the starter. I have not looked into my kit in a while, but see your kit has the manual transmission, yet no clutch pedal under the dash. Having owned three real GTO's years ago, I built models of my burgundy red '64, convertible, my Lime Green vinyl topped '69 GTO, but not my Tyrol Blue '67. Thank you Again for the pointers and encouragement.

After being a body&paint guy 20 years there was a period of time i refused to even go to car shows at all. I was unable to not pick out every imperfection. I still do it somewhat but its engrained in me to do so.....i still appreciate cars though.

I remember this kit being a train wreck. The chassis didn't fit the body, causing the bumpers to pop off if it was moved. The wheels were not centered in the fenders. the engine parts didn't line up correctly and most locating pins had to be removed to fit together.

Another brilliant build. Like others, I've learned a TON from watching these. Right now, I'm building that '77 Ford Pinto you did not long ago. I finished the '86 Monte Carlo, and I still have the Starsky and Hutch '76 Torino, the '70 Pontiac Firebird, the '70 Plymouth AAR 'Cuda and the B-25 Mitchell to do (thanks a lot, bud ;-). And now... gonna have to do this one, as well. BTW: my boss/owner at the full-service gas station in Detroit where I worked as a pump jockey during my high school years in '76/'77 had a full-on '67 GTO with the 400 cid with the four-barrel High Output and a bunch of other goodies. Man, was that one beautiful muscle car. I rank it up there with the '70 Chevelle SS in terms of the greatest Detroit muscle cars of all time.

Looks good, building the Revell 1966 Pontiac GTO right now. The Revell kit has far better detailing, but the window glass's are all seperate which is a pain in the ass. And like you said that MPC kit is an old re-release. I did mine in a light metallic aquamarine green with a black vinyl roof, and stock wheels etc. Excellent channel, I have taken a few ideas and techniques from it.

Is that a 8 track tape molded into the dash radio? Back in the early 70's I bought a 65 Goat, 389, tri-power, 4 speed and posi. GTO stood for "GAS, TICKETS & O MY GOD HANG ON" I got some stellar moving violations in that car including the fastest speeding ticket I ever got from the California Highway Patrol, 135 MPH and the GOAT was still picking up speed. Needless to say the cop wasn't very happy with me. After numerous speeding, exhibition of speed (burnouts) and street racing on cruise night downtown tickets, I found out I was no longer insurable without paying an enormous amount of money. Sadly I sold the GTO and I literally bought a VW bug because I could afford the insurance. I learned a big lesson and it took years for all those tickets to drop off my license. Not to long after I bought the V Dub the engine came out and I turned it into a pretty cool street cruiser that was fast & cool. Now when I do burnouts I look in the rear view mirror first! LOL And you built a beautiful kit as always. I went to the hobby shop yesterday and bought some Testors spray paint and the back of the label says RUST-OLEUM Corp.

I usually let my bodies set for 3 or 4 days just to give them time to cure but you do know what you're doing and the model's you do turn out great looking

If i sent you some pics of a 67 i just completed, could you give me some advice on things i may need to improve on. I know you keep saying build for you, and i completely agree. I am looking to do showroom, and not show piece if that makes sense. The tips you show on your videos are incredible and have helped me immensely since i got back into modeling. Thanks again.

Hello Hank, With real work, family, and two model kit builds and videos plus other bonus videos every week I am unable to allocate time to tutor individual people on their specific builds. Thanks for watching and keep having fun!

That GTO looks awesome! I currently have 2 Revell '57 Fords to build, and an AMT '63 Corvette. I better get to work!

Awesome man!! I didn’t look twice at this kit but your build might force a purchase.... enjoy watching you build almost as much as I like building myself!!! It’s cheaper and I can see the results in under 30 minutes 😂

Chris, you run the best scale model channel on KZfaq! Thank you so much for giving us amazing reviews of your work! I really enjoy it and learned so many useful things to improve the look of my models! Would you be so kind and let us know how you make this more realistic look on the car components like chassis or engine so they actually look used and dirty? I'd really appreciate that! Thank you and greetings from Poland! :)

Glad you like them! I've done a lot of weathering detail videos, just check out any video where you see the model beat up on the title screen.

Previous releases of this kit were a mess. The chassis had been modified from the shorter-wheelbase '68/'72 GTOs and the bucket seats were from the '70 as well. So... Do the front and rear seat patterns match? The '70 exhaust system is shorter than the chassis by a good stretch. Still a hack job from the ERTL days. Regardless, nice job!
