Retirement for Herb looks nothing like what most people envision as life after work. Never one to just sit back, Herb collaborates with top automotive engineers to develop race packages, restores cars from the ground up with his grandsons, and holds seminars for auto enthusiasts who flock to the largest car shows in the United States.

This documentary is a treasure, just like the man himself. That his family has done so much to honor his father, who was gone so much of the time speaks volumes to the contribution his wife made supporting what he did.

Anybody who didnt struggle just a bit to hold back your emotions when his son fired and backed that 70 Sox & Marin car out of the trailer......check your pulse cuz ur prolly dead........i question whether Herb actually knew that was coming or not, it makes sense for filming and production that yes, he prolly knew that was coming, becuz i swear to you, any father that gets ambushed with a car that means THAT much to him would HAVE to crack a tear....unless they edited that out....after watching all of this series and understanding that maybe Herb is a tough nut.....maybe he's able to hide his emotions......but if he truly got ambushed and was able to hide his emotions that well.......that man would have to be a rock. This is a GREAT series, VERY informative, specially to those of us who are not die hard Mopar devotee's.....me, as a Chevy guy, i certainly learned A LOT about the Sox and Martin team, and that SO many video's ive seen of Sox & Martin cars kicking my hero's asses were actually Herb rowing the gears. Emotional.

I only wish SS and DI magazine-the SS bible-was still published. after God made Herb, he broke the mold so we won't get another like this great man. many thanks, Herb, for all you've brought to the automotive industry in general and drag racing in particular!

In 69 I saw Herb beat Dickey Harrell in a match race at a small strip in Sikeston mo. With his hemi Dart. In 70 or 71 I watched him win a big pro stock show at Lakeland in Memphis. I was a Pontiac and Chevy guy , But you just had to admire Herb and the whole Sox and Martin team. Cause you knew they worked their buts off , so when they showed up everything looked Easy. It made me smile when he mentioned George Rays Outlaw Dragstrip. We raced there too it was unique.. he built em , He drove em , a Talented guy , and a genuine nice guy, who said nice guys finish last, not Mr Four Speed.

Funny somebody called me today looking for cheap injectors. I told them they don't want those because when a tip breaks and it burns the piston out of your engine it is going to cost you more to fix than what a good set would have cost you in the first place. Doing it right the first time is the best way on the long run.

I had the great pleasure of meeting and talking with Herb and Mike last weekend at the McCandless Collection Open House. I've met a lot of prominent people in my life, but never felt truly welcome and at ease as I did in the presence of both of these fine men. I was already a fan- folks say you should never meet your heroes, but I say meeting Herb was a fulfilment of a life-long desire. Thanks Herb for being who you are, and a profound thanks to Mike for not only keeping his dad's legacy alive but bringing it to a new generation. I can't wait to see the next car that rolls out of your garage!

Wow, just finished the whole documentary, and did it ever bring back memories, I was at alot of Herb's races, I was a big fan. I bought a Dodge demon in 78, it had a 340 magmum motor, a 4sp and 411 posi traction, that damn car scared me! It was faster than anything I had driven. I sold it to my neighbor and bought it back after he wrecked it, I made more money from that car?!!!! Awesome show!!!!!

I've seen Herb racing many times and really didn't think or understand the different cars he had driven. This series has clarified Herb's career and accomplishments. Also it is a look into the human side of Herb and his dedication to his family. We all should take a lesson from him on how to dedicate his life to a career and how he bleeds Mopar blue. Mopar was lucky to have Herb and we all owe Herb and Sox and Martin for their development of Mopar as a racing leader. Thank you Herb and thank you to those responsible for this series.

Excellent documentary series on Mr. 4 Speed! Someday soon, I hope to meet Mr. McCandless. He is the genuine article, humble and grateful, down to earth person.... from what this series of videos, shows. My family has been involved with Chrysler, since 1964, when my dad got hired to work there. He mainly worked at Highland Park for most of his career, running the IBM TAB computers, that produced V.I.N.'s for all Chrysler vehicles. So I have been a Mopar guy my entire life. Thanks Herb, for sharing your stories with all of us! 👍👍👍

I just finished watching all of the documentary films, on this channel, and I loved it !!! Seeing that early car (and some subsequent ones) with the "A.J. Thomas Chrysler Plymouth" sponsorship lettering, brought a smile to my face. My Grandmother played bridge with Mrs. Thomas. And I saw a car in one of the films lettered with Danny Byrd, as the mechanic. Would that be the Danny Byrd that worked as a parts man for Madison Cadillac? Mr. McCandless mentions Gordon Black, being from a family that owned a truck line. Would that have been, "Gordon's Truck Lines" ??? And finally....where was that Toddle House, that he mentioned, on Poplar Avenue ??? There was more than one, way back then. GREAT VIDEOS !!!
