Yes this is real. Mr Blobby was a British television character, that somehow became one of the most popular sensations of the 90s. Complete with TV Shows, Music No 1s, and even multiple Theme Parks. What were we thinking....

funny you should say that as i looked at the shape of him & his name itself which is another word used for something else, tbh not many have noticed that he's a giant walking pink spotty condom with arms & legs & the name blobby is what we use to nickname condoms instead of using its actual name so he probablys was another way of promoting safe s3x which may have been the intentions of his mascot charactor but they went about it in the wrong way turning him into something that just got in the way while trying to be funny at the same time & to top it off he was suppose to be a fad for the show but went way too far which made him famous

The thing about Mr. Blobby that people who didn't grow up in the 90s don't always realize is that he's _intentionally_ cursed. He was designed as a cursed parody of a character for children rather than being for children himself. Of course, all us kids loved him anyway for some fucking reason. I had a Mr. Blobby pencil topper.

Putting Blobby next to the kind of toys that are big with small children, I feel like it was ahead of its time. If Blobby had come out now he'd be seen as a rip off of a bunch of different mascot horror IPs Edit: forgot about the theme parks. It's one dead child away from being one of those games in real life

I have a friend who is obsessed with Kumamon, a Japanese mascot character known for causing mischief. Mr. Blobby is like the British Kumamon of the 90s. You know, The Banana Splits was a popular variety show from the 60s, but the characters were repurposed as a horror movie in 2019. They should do the same for Mr. Blobby.

I shit you not, Mr. Blobby has his own song and gained the title of 'one of the worst songs of all time'. First heard of him via Blameitonjorge's Creepy Characters From Around The World(the many early channel videos I've watched as an impressionable kid). The UK also graced us with the Tweenies on CBeebies(until they got replaced by Bob the Builder, thank god until Mattel ruined the IP next to Thomas), but Mr. Blobby felt like some terrifying demon that should get killed by either the Ghostbusters, Tenacious D, Doomguy, Hellboy, Dante, or even Bayonetta, because everyone both in the UK and entire world hated this fucker.

My dad - who occasionally frequented the UK in the 90s to visit relatives+friends but never paid much mind to popular culture as he didn't live there - was convinced Blobby was the personification of STDs. Blobby was kind of ahead of his time - he was the ultimate shitpost before the internet was even a thing. Also the Jack Whitehall and Dorothy from Eastenders skits worked because the former took Blobby back to his roots as a prank on Jack, and the latter was making fun of a recent plot point where one of Dot's old partners returned, the episode ends with her looking at her kitchen door and gasping "AH, You!" and in the TV Burp skit they recontextualise it as her reacting to Mr Blobby.

Reflecting on it, I'm actually glad Mr. Blobby exists. Yes he's cheesy, bizarre and definitely creepy, but I think he fit well into the entertainment culture of Britain in the 90's, which was a bit weird going back on it. I mean, Noel's House Party itself seems a bit weird nowadays looking back at it, it was almost like Live & Kicking in the evening slot and without the cartoons, with the game show segments and gunge. To me he's a nostalgic reminder of just how batshit insane UK TV was from the early 90's to the mid 00's. Oh and FYI, blobby didn't really have a purpose built attraction at Pleasurewood Hills, they just used the theatre there (which is quite nice, made to look like a castle from the outside) and it was really kind of closer to a scaled down version of Noel's House Party as a live stage show (gunge tank for a preselected park guest and all). So Blobby was there, but it was more part of the show than anything else. I grew up near Norwich so did visit PH quite a few times in the 90's.

Honestly my favourite memory of Mr Blobby is when he was on Harry Hill's TV Burp when they did a parody skit of an Eastenders bit where he angrily destroys the kitchen, throws copious amounts of flour around before Harry Hill came up and hit him over the head with a frying pan (this scene is the first scene shown of Mr Blobby in this video). The skit is then followed by Harry Hill making Mr Blobby and an angry Eastenders character fight before the commercial

I'm pretty sure the creation of this character involved several narcotics. The writing team did a few lines and concluded:"What if we did a really weird pink polka dotted massive clown with demonic screams that just breaks stuff". An executive did another line and probably said: Yeah sounds like a great idea let's do it.

It's really not that hard, the idea behind Mr. Blobby was to make a parody of children's mascots. And that meant that he had to be colourful, gaudy and obnoxious because kids love that kind of stuff. He was a blob so they didn't have to work to hard to make him look like anything in particular, and he made stupid noises because he was meant to be annoying. The point was to piss off the adults who would try and tolerate him because kids loved him. Just claiming "It was drugs lmao" buys into the BS idea that they are needed to be creative. You just need a idea of what you want to create first and what you want to accomplish. Mr. Blobby design is just "throw whatever makes him look stupid and ugly" as a design principal.

I was terrified by that pink bastard as a kid. I saw him once live on stage at Beaulieu, it started off fine as it was some boyband tribute act I can't remember what band exactly but it was pretty good from what I remember of it. However Mr Blobby appeared outta no where and I hid behind my mum in fear. I think that might of been the first time I saw him probably, as I was born waaay after blobby being a thing. Even so I'm weirdly fascinated by him and his history, it's one of those things that we will never get again ever. The whole thing being nothing but a perfect example of a time capsule of a much different time in UK pop culture.

That's arguably not true though, is it? Shaun the Sheep, Basil Brush, Morph, Sooty & Sweep, Postman Pat, Bagpuss, Mr Benn, Bob the Builder, Peppa Pig, The Magic Roundabout, The Wombles, Camberwick Green, Winnie the Pooh, The Clangers, Fireman Sam, Chucklevision, Captain Pugwash, Pingu and Mr Men, are quite popular/were/achieved varying levels of success outside the UK. That is not an exhaustive list, by any means, either. Sure, some of those are nowhere near as successful as Mr Bean or Thomas the Tank/Thomas and Friends, but the thing is, Peppa Pig for example is arguably _even more successful_ than ALL of those you mentioned, combined. Peppa Pig genuinely is a brand worth billions, as low-key one of Britain's most successful TV franchise exports. And think of all the characters in Roald Dahl or the works of J.R.R Tolkien, popular with countless children, or JK Rowling for that matter. By online viewership and franchise engagement, Mr Bean will somehow still be doing great, with many tens of millions of views globally, but there are other ways of gauging success. Arguably, if something is culturally relevant enough to be memorable on some level, or reprinted and republished for new generations, then it is still something worthy of mentioning in terms of popularity, even if the cultural focus has shifted and even if the most people still don't know what it is. And 'popular outside England' can mean a lot of things (literally, anywhere that isn't England; including a lot of the Anglosphere with obvious reasons for having television company connections and contacts with the British television industry e.g. the Australian and Canadian television industry) It's why lots of British children TV shows from the 90's would mix up schedules with British cartoons but also international content from fellow broadcasters they were friendly with, sharing shows. For instance, on 'Dick & Dom in da Bungalow' you'd see anything from the Angry Beavers (USA), Yvon of the Yukon (Canada), The Cramp Twins (German-British-Canadian) and a range of other, often more experimental options on their segments. They'd do their pranks and 'bogies' thing, then run a cartoon before more weirdness ensued. Mr Men is obviously far past it's golden age in terms of it's place in the cultural zeitgeist, though having said that, it still sells millions of books worldwide, so is it a failure overseas? Not really. It has become very recognisable and it's also had the advantage, at this point, of about half a century of varying yet consistently good or very good recognition for being good children's TV and book content. It's pretty iconic in it's own right. But is it making Peppa Pig money? No. Popularity can mean a lot of things to be fair.

Despite not being from the UK, I first knew of this character through America's Funniest Home Videos. I believe the video itself was about a minute long. In it, a performer dressed as Mr. Blobby was being pushed away by children, along with being screamed at with possible phrases like "Get out!" At the end of the video, the performer finally left the room as all the children cheered in victory. I didn't know what the character's name was at the time, but in retrospect, I do not blame those kids for having such a reaction like that.

The formula works because it's the classic auguste/whiteface clown pairing. He even has a red nose. We used to watch Noel's House Party round at our dad's. And I bought him the Mr Blobby single for Christmas, which I'm sure he appreciated. The lyricist clearly had too much fun: "if humanity is a question of degree, stay loyal to your Blobby pedigree" implying that blobbies are better than humans (which, fair). I've never heard the album tracks before, but they also sound like people having a massive laugh. I still can't imagine why they went ahead with a theme park. If you have a craze like that, you should KNOW it will peter out before you can make a friggin' _theme park_ profitable.
