In this episode we do a traditional wheat glue paste relining. This technique is hundreds of years old and is the traditional way a canvas would have been lined in the 18th century. I go through the whole process from start to finish. Including preparing the stretcher, sizing the linen, facing the paintinting and much more.

Thanks for showing a traditional method of flattening and mounting the canvas. It looks great. Can’t wait to see the cleaning. I narrate audio books. You should narrate something with your smooth, soothing voice and accent. Cheers my friend.

wouldn't it be easier to apply the paper on the dry painting, and then apply the glue on top of it? Seems like it would prevent creasing and air bubbles, and will save time

maybe but sometimes the loose paper slides and drags and even with the best will it can cause bubbles, plus the paper expands and swells , maybe I made it look more difficult than it is...

Why do you use rabbit skin glue and not conservation fish glue?

You can use either for attaching facing paper as both are reversibile with moisture and this was what I wanted to use for this traditional method. Fish glue was quite expensive back in the day due to the rarity of the fish used and would have been used for parchment repair etc, rabbit skin glue would have been more readily available so I felt in this process it would be more authentic.

In my opinion it is absolutly unnecessary to reline the whole picture. This always reduces the value and takes away the originality of the painting and the patina on the back of the canvas, which shows the traces of the centuries. A side relining, only if is absolutly nessesary and relativ rare the case, is sufficient in almost all cases.
