I feel like you're old enough that somewhere you've seen a Spirograph, you probably just didn't know what it's called : p It's those plastic gears with different shapes, sizes, and teeth, that you use pens in to make spiral patterns for fun doodling.

but the thing is, Diane rightly interpreted the coat as a sign Guy wanted her to move in with him, to Chicago, which is an unspoken grand gesture that freaked her out. It's not just that she doesn't like big gestures, the Belle room was a fantasy, "something that belonged to me" and because it wasn't real "that meant it was just mine." PB took something personal and sacred to her and without consulting her, had it made into reality, robbing it of the very thing that made it so special. He filled it with fake books, he had other people do it while they were gone, and again, he surprised her with it, which he KNOWS makes her uncomfortable and anxious. If he'd said "hey, let's set aside a space in our new house for you to set up a library or belle-room or study area just for you, and we can design it together if you like," that probably would've had the effect PB was going for with the surprise. Like you said, she does have this objection to feeling good, and never feels safe or comfortable being happy, so she pulls away when she starts to feel happy. It's definitely a character flaw, and yes it played a role in the divorce, but I feel like saying PB bears no blame, or that he couldn't have been conscientious of her wants and needs, or listened to her, is disingenuous and lets him off the hook for how badly he treated her as a partner.

@@quinintheclouds And Diane looked at that coat before on the street, and didn't bought it because she felt she doesn't deserve it, it's like admitting the possiblity of being happy, which she doesn't want to risk yet. Her getting the coat forces her to consider the possibility, and doesn't want to feel that pressure building on her...

I'm just saying, as someone who like Diane always focuses on the small bad part of everything, that coat WAS a big gesture, it had a big meaning and Guy likes to go with the flow and not question things much, which Diane definitey needs, but Guy was being very unclear on what he wanted, too.
