Dave really behaved himself on this episode. Fred Rogers was very serious about the work that he did. Adults had a difficult time taking Fred seriously because so many Adults had not been taken seriously as children by the adults in their childhood. This was a very good interview, one of the best Fred Rogers interviews I have seen.

This also comes from his morning show, 2 years before he moved to Late Night. Only lasted for 90 episodes and I'm not sure I've seen another one to compare it to but I'd expect him to be a little more tight-lipped in the AM.

@@alexhumble6435 Yes, I agree. Plus Dave was younger as well and not as self-assured. In this episode, Dave seemed to be a bit more vulnerable and engaging. Dave's morning show was my introduction to David Letterman. I was 18 and was so disappointed when the show was taken off. It was a nice change from the standard game shows. That a.m. show was like a pilot season. He was very fortunate to have had that kind of opportunity to display his wacky form of humor. We laughed ourselves silly. We do know that adults have a difficult time taking Fred Rogers seriously because they had rarely, if ever, been treated with such respect as a child. Fred's way of interacting with children is very alien from the way so many adults interact with children.

There's a great podcast series on Fred Rodgers. I recall he worked with a forward thinking childs psychologist for the time. Yes, masked as a childrens show he cared about kids and making quality supportive programming for them.

Watching Mr. Rogers as an adult really affects me in a different way. I loved him as a very young child and as i grew up obviously i thought it was schmaltzy baby stuff. I was lucky enough to grow up in a home full of love but to me that was just the normal. As an adult you see the world for what it is and you realize that some children probably really did need to hear someone say that they loved them, and that they cared about them because they were not getting it from the people who were supposed to be making them feel loved. It really makes you appreciate his work on a whole other level

I love it when Dave waves at the puppet. Mr. Rogers was a delightful, gentle man. I was afraid that Dave would be sarcastic with him, but I think Dave respected what Fred did for children and the world.

I’m watching it with my kids a few minutes every night. They don’t get much screen time. He’s in an exalted sphere. Who else on TV expressed authentic love? Who else’s talked about how to love? Where else anywhere? He was rare. So very rare.

Hey, I went against the grain and had only 30 minutes of screen time for my children daily and no electronics (nothing electronic in their rooms or mine). They turned out to be heavy readers and still are to this day when my son isn't working on his own writing. You'll let your children grow into who they were meant to be without letting electronics shape them and Mr. Rogers teaches those messages beautifully.

I couldn't help but cry when he sang "It's You I Like". Just the purity of intent in Mister Rogers in singing that song summed up with the masterful music and melody composed by him and masterfully played by Mr. John Costa is of great delight to the core of our souls. Thank you, Mister Rogers. And thank you, Mr. Letterman, for the respect given to him in this interview.

While that song is meant for young children, it's one that older kids, teens and even adults need to hear and understand. As we grow, we often become superficial, partly out of fear of rejection. We think that our hair, clothes and toys ARE what people like. In some cases, unfortunately, it's true, but internalizing that the person is what is important is something we should all remember - because too often, we don't.

Love it! You can see the look on David Letterman's face when confronted by King Friday 13th, he knows he's talking to Fred Rogers' hand but just for a brief moment, he gets drawn into that land of make-believe that we all can't help but get drawn into from time to time and turns into a child again! Fred Rogers was a certified genius...

Fred Rogers was so easy to listen to and still is to me even all this time later. So gentle, so genuine and caring. A man who honestly loved his work and the audience he did it for. Just grabs your attention and can't help but not watch.

I’m an Aussie, but have a special interest in children education, especially after having my son nearly 5 years ago. Reading about and watching Fred Rogers in action after hearing about him as a child, and also to an extent my son watching Daniel tigers neighbourhood, I have really come to appreciate this special man’s work and legacy. Our day care centre does a daily report on an app and when we I open the daily report there is always a Fred Rogers quote in the header - “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” - Fred Rogers

Did anyone else notice that the spotlight on Mr. Letterman was turned off while Mr. Rogers was singing? Dave was as much an audience member as his audience. Growing up I loved Mr. Rogers Neighborhood and as an adult I loved Letterman's late night shows, and this was neat, to see two favorites together, enjoying each other just the way they were.

As a young child I would watch Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. It was I would say, a happy and joyful time in my life. The positivity and learning experience was top notch. Fred Rogers will always be remembered as one of the greatest and most polite people God put on this green earth for the love and support he gave children through his programming. I salute you in heaven sir. 👍

I love every second of this. Kids even got a taste for Jazz with Mr. Rogers. Costas syncopates with Rogers with such amazing fluidity. I don't think they ever did the same song exactly the same way. I noticed the drummer couldn't even wait at the end and starts with the brushes before the breakdown.

I grew up watching Mister Rogers Neighborhood and I LOVE this man for the gentleness, caring nad patience he showed. I would be entranced by the puppets as a little boy. He was a very caring and special person in all of our lives. There will never be another Mister Rogers. He was ONE OF A KIND!

I have more renditions of "It's You I Like" towards the beginning of my Movie Playlist that, all together as a set, reach the soul and drive the point home, teaching the song at the same time, in different styles, given by different people and means, followed by this video and the two movie trailers pertaining to Mr. Rogers and the work of nurture that they did, followed by the music of Johnny Costa, the jazz piano of Mr. Rogers' songs that were heard on the show. I organize my playlists, and this section, taken all together, provide a sweet touch to the heart, with memories dear from long ago, that might uplift the listener/viewer.

As a child of the 70s and teen of the 80s, I really can't say what a difference Mr. Rogers made in my life. I can say I don't think I would have made it through young life believing I was anything without him. And being all alone making up play, made me write instead of watch. It is my belief that Mr. Rogers' nurture through the television made all the difference in many children making it through to adulthood, that if Fred hadn't been "present" in their young lives as they were, many would not have made it through. Many parents are present only in body, in their children's lives, and not present at all from the heart, but children need that nurture, and Fred gave that through the airwaves. I'm sure it made a big difference to many.

He reminds me of my childhood best friend's dad. He was a teacher at our school. He grew the best apples in the world. All kinds cuz he grafted other kinds to other trees. That's how he came up with the best Gravenstein apple. He was a wonderful father. Their family was very different from mine. I'll bet Mr. Rogers was a great, loving and kind father. My dad was a truck driver and one of the Best. He smoked cigs and drank alcohol. Mo was a waitress or worked in places that served alcohol and she also smoked and drank. They fought pretty bad. Always scared the hell out of me. And my 2 brothers. That was back in the 50's and 60's. Lot different back then.

Mr. Rogers enables us to feel vulnerable and then as adults we feel a bit silly sitting with that feeling. But it’s quite good for us to be in touch with that. Hopefully, as parents, grandparents and formal educators, we can recall that feeling when interacting with children. He understood it is our responsibility to teach kindness, empathy and how to demonstrate compassion. His episodes on the Vietnam war and assassinations of our era were beyond expectations for any children’s program. He’s sorely missed these days.

I remember when I was much younger and I would avoid watching Mr. Rogers. I hated that show. I hated it because if I didn't change the channel quickly enough I'd find myself watching the entire episode. I would end up in totally another world of peace and calmness. I know that sounds a bit strange, but I was older than I felt Mr. Roger's show was meant for. Nevertheless, if I watched a bit too much, I had to watch until the end. A few times when I would get to work on a Monday, everyone would be really quiet. Not many people are into beginning a workweek. So, I would start singing "It's a beautiful day in the Neighborhood" and the office would start talking and laughing.

Whether here or on Late Nite, Dave could never get the better of Mr. Rodgers. You would think Dave's ironic tone would cut straight through Rodgers sincerity but it always worked the opposite way. In every appearance, Dave shrinks back and lets Rodgers take the lead. Speaks to the meek but powerful force of Rodger's personality.

Mr. Rogers could totally pick up Mjolnir. But he'd never use it to fight; he'd probably do carpentry instead. Most likely, building houses for homeless families. Of course, he'd give it back to Thor first chance he got, because you shouldn't keep things that belong to someone else.

I like this Dave a lot. After the host fiasco he became a different person (understandably), but I remember actively avoiding the show as a teen/young adult.
