Mr. Tambourine Man was the first hit single for the Byrds. It was written by Bob Dylan. The musicians on the record were for the most part, members of the Wrecking Crew. Hal Blaine on drums, Larry Knechtel on Bass guitar (He also played piano of S&G's Bridge Over Troubled Water and was a member of Bread), Jerry Cole on Rhythm guitar and Leon Russell on electric piano (buried in the mix, but still there). Roger McGuinn was the only "Byrd" to play on the recording. McGuinn, David Crosby (CSN) and Gene Clark handled the vocals. We did our best to recapture the original sound and feel of the Byrds' recording..

Mate, time to learn some facts, Byrds played on their 1st Album. Mr Tambourine Man, to make a single only, A&Bsides 3 hour session, McGuinn on 12 string and his arrangement and intro and the Byrd’s harmony, Jan 65 released May 1965 and was a hit and Columbia gave the go ahead for an Album.

You actually sound like the original "Jim" McGuinn (not Roger) version of this song in 1965. It even includes the 12-string Rickenbacker guitar that McGuinn used. Great performance! The Byrds are my favorite band of all time and "The Bells of Rhymney" by them is my favorite song of all time.

Hello Skip I have a bit of a story about "Bells of Rhymney" - also my favorite Byrds song.. Roger McGuinn brings his solo show to any one of several venues here in Connecticut where I live and I try to see him every visit. Some years ago he played at the Katherine Hepburn Center in Old Saybrook and I attended the show. At the souvenir table before the show was an attractive dark haired woman speaking to the customer ahead of me in line. She was remarking that "We were and there" at several places around the country, and so on. I guessed she was Roger's wife and when it was my turn I asked "You must be Camilla?" and she admitted that was true. We chatted for a few minutes and I mentioned that at a previous show at Infinity Hall in Norfolk, Connecticut, I was somewhat disappointed that "Bells of Rhymney" was not performed and asked if it might be in the set list that evening. "Oh, I don't know about that" she replied. The show started and Roger played his first set then took a break. He came out for the second set and, sure enough, "Bells" was the third song in. I stood up and gave a very visible two thumbs up. After the show I went back to the souvenir table to thank Camilla for the show and asked if my request had put the song in the show. "Oh, I'll never tell" she replied with a grin. Whether it did or not I can always believe my request had put "Bells of Rhymney" into the show that evening. mushertom@cox.net Meriden CT
