As a PSA, during the video I mention the theoretical possibility of having a dock/hub that could convert an HDMI signal (or older protocol DP signal) to USB4 or Tb4, the dock that I show during that segment is used as a visual aid but is not a reference of a solution to that effect. That device does not even have DP or HDMI in. If such a solution exists (cable, dock or hub), please do consider sharing a link on this comment for the ones who may be interested in such a product. Cheers!

I just assumed that the video input would be more flexible than it actually is. I could deal with having the computer turned off, but that it doesn't do 120hz out of the box for every device connected to it is so, so disappointing. For me, the whole point is to connect it to a gaming device while traveling. This was the only review that addressed that feature in depth; thank you so much! Great content. For now, I will wait for a V4 or a deep sale on the V3.
@GameTechTalk3 ай бұрын
Yeah, what I wonder at all is if the board that handles the v-input notion is firmware upgradeable, be it through bios, Windows or whatever else. Someone said they had a firmware update that enabled video input into Windows to sort of act as a capture card but I didn't see that as a thing. If it's physically locked the way it is, it's unfortunate because that 120hz should indeed be EDID enabled. Big miss on them for that specific thing. And thanks for the kind words btw!

So what I like about the video-in feature: I travel a lot and cary 2 laptops, table, and a portable monitor so I can still 2 screen it. This would replace my tablet and portable screen. Best case, when I do short travels, it may get to the point I just have my work laptop and this. I really cannot use an iPad pro as a replacement for my laptop on travel.... which sucks.

I have a modded Galileo G8 gamepad but I don't think I'd use it with the V3. For me I would take it travelling with my S9 tab ultra (second screen with superdisplay, or independently). I currently need 2 monitors for my work (writing on one screen, reading on the other). I have a yogabook 9i (first one) which has nice displays but seems to lag for some reason.

@@Dragorus360 The X1 AMD is arguably better for gaming, with attached controllers and better heat management for heavy usage. It also sports faster ram, bigger configurations if needed but also does not synthetically lock TDP as aggressively. Last but not least, the X1 also has an Oculink port if looking to venture deeper into eGPU solutions.

Thank you. This feature was really appealing. But finiding out I need to turn off the V3 computer to use the display from another device is a bummer. I do not know if that is a hardware issue, or a software issue. But my plan of hot switching from my phone to a PC on the display sounds like it would not work.

Unfortunately. Granted, the boot time and shut time is quite fast but it is necessary for the feature to work, at least up to this point. I tried putting Windows on Sleep, it's not enough for it to work either. I wanted to try "Hibernate" but wasn't able to "easily" restore the feature through command prompt so I decided I'd tackle that in the final review if I can. If you have questions, don't hesitate. Do you have a reference model to the USB4 adapter for DP in ?
@GameTechTalk3 ай бұрын
Oh snap! You made me realize I forgot to put text on the dock that I show. Don't get that, its not meant as a "reference" but rather an example. In all honesty, if such a solution exists, I have yet to see it. I'd think there is probably a device somewhere that can convert HDMI to Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 but if it exists, I've never seen it. Most docks, cables, adapters that you see only work in the other direction, which is USB-C to HDMI, but HDMI to USB-C seems not to be a thing. However, there is a solution to convert HDMI to DP and then DP to USB-C. I never tried such a thing but apparently, with these two chained solution, it could work. I thought it was a bit too "makeshift" for the video. Thanks for reminding me, I'll put a pinned note!

@GameTechTalkАй бұрын
If gaming is important, the X1 is unequivocally superior. If gaming is a side kind of thing and carries little weight, the Minisforum V3 is a decent tablet but it does have a bit of flaws, nothing too alarming and mostly to be forgotten a week into ownership.

@@GameTechTalk gaming would be a thing not major one but definitely a thing, but not as a handheld. Also browsing and just chill with series and movies. What are the flaws from v3
@GameTechTalkАй бұрын
@@sebastiancasal8589 One of the main flaws for me is the slight mura effect on the panel. I also dislike that I have to shut it down for the input USB-C monitor to work, and that it uses it's own battery without offering passthrough. But quite frankly, these are minor gripes for the most part, if you know that gaming will be part, without being the number 1 thing, I'd say you probably won't be disappointed. Seems like you want first and foremost the convenience of a tablet and I could argue that it is indeed a slightly better tablet than the X1 while saying in the same breath that it is not as good for everything else though.

@@GameTechTalk awesome and in gaming what’s the difference between one and the other leaving out the handheld mode?

@@sebastiancasal8589 Temp management, Oculink, versus X1, definitely audio (nowhere near as good on Minisforum V3) and TDP locking but that can be addressed with the right tools. @GameTechTalk2 ай бұрын
It does but it is hindered by the TDP being locked and the overall thermal dissipation design. It's not a bad choice by no means, and most of the things I mentioned can be addressed, just out-of-box, it's obvious that the manufacturer did not focus "gaming" but rather productivity. Still, it can be made absolutely viable for gaming and yes, it'll match the ROG ALLY, outperform it even!

@@GameTechTalk TDP isn't locked, I think you can use RyzenAdj or UXTU (I use UXTU) to increase the TDP, and I see it reported successfully with HWInfo64. @@GameTechTalk yeah, it's a shame that Minis Forum didn't also let you tweak the settings away from the predefined ones in their app, but I do also understand that most people aren't tinkerers and shouldn't "have access to the nuclear codes" for warranty reasons, like someone cranking the TDP to 60W and running the tablet for months at the PDPROCHOT limit for instance.
