"We" in COLOMBIA eat Guava Paste or "Bocadillo" with Cheese (You can use mozzarella cheese) One thing I can say with conviction is that the combination of salty cheese and sweet guava paste is one of those heavenly combinations.

So exciting Barry! My husband is from Colombia! That lump of fat is from the tocino, get that a lot in the States where the tin of beans has a block of pork fat included with them; typically you can simmer them on the stovetop until the fat melts down; it's great for flavor! One of the best parts of Colombia's brilliant cuisine are they excellent pressed fruit juices. Passion fruit (maracuya) and lulo are AMAZING flavors. Lulo lollies are amazing, too, though I'm personally biased. If there were a single, simple Colombian recipe you could ever make a great video from, I highly suggest pericos; it's a Colombian scrambled egg with tomatoes and onions. While my mother-in-law grates/pulverizes the onions and tomatoes into a sort of paste, many Colombians also use finely chopped tomatoes and scallions mixed in. The flavor completely invigorates breakfast, especially for those who live and die by protein at breakfast. I loved the video! Glad you all had fun with it!

Hi guys, great video, I'm Colombian and I thought you might like to know that the Copelia treats you had were what we call arequipe, in many other countries it's dulce de leche, when you cook milk with sugar beyond the point of condensed milk. And the Lochona is normally eaten fresh, and it's really nice, not so much from a tin. You are very welcome to come and visit :)

Barry, I like your videos and, as a Colombian, this one was really cool. There are some video like this about Colombian food and this is the most honest one. Some clarifications: Bocadillo is basically Guayaba (Psidium guajava) cooked with sugar and water. It becomes a thick jam. Mani Mono is just great: peanut covered with a flour based batter and deep fried. A classic. Fríjoles: in some regions of Colombia, people love this kind of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris). They are cooked with pork for some hours and that's it. They are used in the 'Bandeja Paisa'. Google it. A very decadent dish. Chokis, another classic: a mixture of corn flour, baked and covered with chocolate. ‘Gelatinas Bumbi’, in this case, are called popularly ‘Gelatina de Pata’, literally ‘gelatin of foot’, ‘Beef cow foot gelatin’. You know, traditionally (and still now) gelatin was made with collagen from animal parts including its foot bones. They extract this product and combine it with ‘Panela’ (cooked sugarcane). They are covered with flour because it will get very sticky otherwise. Lechona: a very popular dish. Google it and you will see. Basically, you take a pig and filled it with a combination of its meat, rice and beans. Then it’s roasted for some hours. The roasted skin is a very important part of the ‘Lechona’. Copelia: They are some Colombian sweets made with sugar and coconut. The brown one is based on ‘Arequipe’ a.k.a ‘Dulce de Leche’: milk and sugar cooked for hours until it becomes dark brown. Erpitos: filled with Guayaba jam. The wafer doesn’t have any taste and has a very paper-like texture. That’s it, you guys. Great video. Greetings from Colombia :)

The blob that was in the beans is pork fat. In Canada, we have beans cooked in molasses with pork and beans in tomato sauce. I prefer the latter. Great show guys!

@mew11two
@mew11two 8 жыл бұрын
+Ethan Gordon It can also mean "snack" and is the diminutive of "bocado", which means "mouthful", which is what I'm guessing the name sake of the product was. "Bocadillo" meaning "sandwich" is typical of Spain and they probably wouldn't use it that way in Columbia.

Man, I was freaking hungry as I watched this. I haven't had any of that stuff in years. A little thing about lechona. It is a Colombian delicacy. Just, well, it's mostly served at parties and special occasions, and is only good when it's fresh and cooked. A tin... well, doubt it captured the rice's true flavor. Basically, everything you tried that was in a tin probably did not taste as good as the freshly made dish. As for bocadillo (boca-deeyo) it can also be served with cheese, like queso panela or queso campesino.

The best snacks you would find in Colombia are on the side of the street markets. Local vendors food is the bests, éxitos is the like Walmart / tesco version of generic foods. Also shocked you did not try anything without plantain or yucca. Now that is a staple there. Or even dulce de leche/ areqipe. I feel horrible when you got the Lechona because it is far from the good lechona we eat with rice and guiso or sopas.
