Cool way to rank the albums. You are very harsh imo lol. My S tier (does that mean super?) would be very crowded- all 60s albums except debut and NS, then BotTs, Desire, Basement Tapes, Oh Mercy, TooM, L&T, Modern Times and R&RWs. So thats 15. Im a lost cause really lol. But the more rock music I listen to the more I realise how unique and great Dylan is. My other rows would differ greatly too, of course. But fun watch thanks! Stuart.

Thanks for watching. My ranking is based mainly on albums I return to and enjoy listening to. Not to say those in B/C/D are not decent records!

World Gone Wrong should be in the S tier. It has Dylan's best singing and contains genuine gems like Two Soldiers and Delia. Good as I been to You should be up there as well. Dylan's performance of Arthur McBride is very compelling. Canadee-I-O and Jim Jones are incredible too. I agree with you about the Sinatra stuff, though I do love Melancholy Mood. Good list overall, MDR. The video was a fun watch.

Yeah to be fair I haven’t listened to either album in a long time. It’s quite possible I would like them a lot more now. Thanks for the comment!

Wholeheartedly agree. More than anything, those two albums reminded us how truly amazing he is as a folk singer. Just him and a guitar. No one has ever done it better. Plus, It's some of the best singing he's ever done along with some really terrific guitar playing. Songs like Hard Times or Sittin' On Top of the World, which has been covered by many different artists, sound fresh and original. In addition to the songs you mentioned I would have to include Froggie Went a Courtin', Diamond Joe, Blood in My Eyes, and last but not least Lone Pilgrim.

It is one I do occasionally listen to, but as an album I don't think it holds together very well.

I agree with your S tier rankings. It's hard to argue against BOTT and the mid-60s trio albums as being Dylan's very best work. The first thing I disagree with is your ranking of Street-Legal... It's a solid album and it easily makes high B. I don't like the words underrated and overrated, but I will make an exception in this case - Street-Legal is an underrated album and always has been. Saved goes in the B tier, too. I enjoy that album, even as a non-religious person. I am almost tempted to put it in A because I have such a soft spot for it - Pressing On, Saving Grace, Covenant Woman, and In the Garden are all fantastic tracks. Also, I would put Time out of Mind in A tier based on how often I listen to it, which is regularly. I am pleased that you mentioned Highlands in particular. I love that song! Further, I would drop Empire Burlesque to F. I can't stand that album, mainly due to the OTT cheesy 80s production. When the Night Comes Falling from the Sky makes me want to vomit... The album's only redeemable song, for me, is Dark Eyes, and even that is not vintage Dylan. Empire Burlesque's successor, Knocked Out Loaded, is probably even worse in the production department, but at least that album contains Brownsville Girl, which is a Dylan classic. Finally, I think putting Love & Theft in C tier is astonishing. It's a classic late-period Dylan album and it goes in high B or low A, for me.

I also agree with the other commenter about “World Gone Wrong” even though it’s a covers album, I think it’s really well done, interesting collection of songs, particularly “Love Henry”.. I would put “John Wesley Harding” in the highest tier, Good list though, and nice video.

Nice List! Oh Mercy is an S for me. And for some reason i really really like Street Legal, never get tired of it - would place it in B.

Good vid. I’d personally have TOOM & times they are a changin’ in at least the A tier. Street legal, Love & Theft & Modern times definitely would be higher than C too. R&R Ways is at least an ‘A’ for me. Some of his strongest songwriting ever. Key west is lyrically insane.

Loved the video. Imo, The Times They Are A Changin is S Tier and most days my favorite Dylan album
@johnjackson3735 Жыл бұрын
My favorites are Blonde on Blonde, Highway 61 followed closely by Bringing It All Back Home, then The Basement Tapes, and Freewheelin,' Blood on the Tracks First pressing (New York Sessions), Another Side of Bob Dylan, John Wesley Harding, Desire, Love and Theft or Oh Mercy

As a huge Dylan fan, I find this is the best rating of Dylan's albums I've seen, though we are miles apart in generation. I even agree with your selections when you debated which tier to put albums on.

I've just come across your channel while searching for deep dylan cuts on yt. So I'm interested in your thoughts on the best live versions of his songs. For example, my favorite version of "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" is from the Carnegie 63 show. I think it's the first version I heard and now every version, including the studio version, all pale in comparison. What are some favorite live versions of songs do you enjoy and what do you think of my take on the Don't think twice versions?

Hello! is it a " class list" of album ? in order of merit ? what is the principle ? your good taste ? each letter ( S, A,B;;;) correspond to a better or lower rank? ( S is the first, ad F the last ?)! perhaps it would be more precise to draw up a more long list, for differentiate more the albums! why not twenty ranks ?

If JWH were called "All along the watchtower" it would make everybody's S. Now it has that silly outlaw name and people tend to forget that it has easily 8 of his best songs ever on it.
@DeanJonasson9 ай бұрын
Interesting ranking list. The classics are beyond doubt and the 'dogs' are obvious. I'd bump up a few more of his '60s albums and consign the Xmas album to F. I think you probably could have given his 'renaissance' albums (TIME OUT OF MIND, etc.) another listen before starting. Those albums are much stronger than B or C tier with strong writing and a distinctive production style. I would agree about the American songwriter albums as well as the over-rated R&R WAYS. One note: the infamous DYLAN album was not put out by him but by his label, Columbia, after he jumped to Geffin's Asylum Label (BEFORE THE FLOOD and PLANET WAVES). The album is made up of cast-offs, mostly from the SELF TITLED sessions.

Yes, looking back I was perhaps a little harsh on the early 60's albums given how pioneering they were. I was underprepared when it came to the 90's/00's records for sure, but it's only a bit of fun. Thanks for the comment.

that "Dylan" album is shockingly listenable considering its reputation. I wouldn't put it in F tier personally

I was so angry (and confused) at your Street Legal placement that I listened to it three more times the next day. Modern Times is at least an 'A' for me as well. On the positive side you have re-aroused my interest in Bringing it All Back Home and Planet Waves. The former has always been a tough listen but I've learned to skip Subterranean Homesick Blues and it is much improved now. That and Rainey Day Woman # 12 & 35 are the only two Dylan songs I need to skip every time.

You should probably refamiliarize yourself with an artists catalogue before doing another ranking video. Things really fell apart for you after the '60s (classic albums which my dog could have ranked). Your B and C levels contain albums most other artists can only dream about. Also, maybe you should hydrate yourself before shooting your videos. Just a thought.
@MrDylanRecords Жыл бұрын
Hydrate myself? The whole point of a tier list is that the albums are ranked relative to his other work, not the work of others. Good try though.
