I checked in deep and I saw that Aquamarine has been synthesized by hydrothermal growth in Siberia. Under magnification it is possible to see the limit between the near colorless seed and the light blue Beryl. There is other type of inclusions typical of hydrothermal growth. It is easy to check them out. I think those Aquamarine are rare on the market and today it will cost to much to make and market them. Synthetic blue Spinel is cheap, clean and easy to make with flame fusion process. Regards

It's my understanding that most ruby is heat treated to improve color. some estimate up to 95%. An unexpected result of heat treating is some glass fill of inclusions(found when heat treatment started approx 1200 AD). Would this still be considered GF? How does it detract from value? very informative thank you

The stone at 4:15 is a nat. corundum called Songea from Africa. The stone is not only heated, but heated with Be that is considered as an heavy treatment. Thats why the price is low for a 2.66 cts. If the stone was totally natural with no treatment price will raise up to 10 to 15'000$US per carat because it is very rare to find a ruby with such clarity and color. The difference between a natural ruby just heated compared with a no treated depend of the origin and ct, around 10 to 20% lower.

Hi Friend, you did an good video of how to know fake ruby. part 1 to 5. is really helpful. any other way to test an man make ruby. i have an big ruby and is heavy about size of 20mm x 20mm i don't see any bubble or cured and it can scratch glass . i try to scratch it with coin and other metal but unable to scratch it. i even put inside an bleach detergent for a day. but nothing happen. the stone just the same as it is. can anyone tell me what to do??. any other testing matter.

Hello Sir How are you? I've been speaking with GIA graduates on determining LGF in star ruby/ sapphire other rutilated Mtrls. Not ONE can tell me the best way to determine LGF in these stones. In 2002 a Thai Mftr notified the GIA of his methods and plans of marketing heated / LGF Star mtrls. Most of the information i've read / referred to is based upon translucent mtrl. I have a 12 ray black sapphire i bought very reasonably. however the SG is 4.072 raising an eyebrow. I see no odd deformations in the surface But I can't see into it well enough for flash yellow pocketing or bubbles Ive tried backlighting. SO i'm coming to my favorite expert Short of an electron microscope what is the best method for determining LGF in Opaque material? Could I use aqua regia to etch the poly /LGF? ( I realize it would destroy LGF mtrl) what would this do to genuine corundum? Thanks Rob

You right, there is no reason to buy from Thailand if you can have a provider in another country. The fact is that many Rubies from Africa, Madagascar and other places are sent to Bangkok mostly for treatment. For myself, I am working with a friend in Bangkok over 10 years and I can find best quality and prices there. Buying gemstones in Thailand ask you to have a deep knowledge in gemology and in the trade. I was in BKK in February and I was surprised to see the prices rising for nice quality.

Unfortunately UV can't be diagnostic to make a decision checking only one stone, but the glow from synthetics in mixed parcel of natural and synthetic rubies will be perceptibly stronger. The loupe in some case can help too, but I know many people who are making mistakes, especially with the FLUX-MELT Corundum like Chatham, Kashan, Ramaura and Knischka stones. As they are hard to make and need two to eight months to grow (6 hours for flame-fusion) , today it is rare to find them on the market.

The cutting is not very expensive, but if the rough is very nice you have to find a very good specialist to be sure that your rough will be cut following the rules. The ruby show pleochroisme and have to be cut the right way if possible (table perpendicular to C axe).

Hi, sorry for late answer, I was traveling... Yes the heat treatment is an accepted practice. It is OK as long as the process is disclosed to the customer, like any other treatment. The impact on a heated ruby is mostly on the price.

Hi, usually the price for rough boule flame fusion ruby or sapphire (Corundum) will go from 200$US to 300$US for a kilo, all depending on the quality. Best quality do not have any gaze bubble or powder traces. The price can go up to 3000$US the kilo depending on the color of the corundum because some color are difficult to obtain, like the orange, yellow, some red, etc. PS This is the wholesale price, not easy to obtain if you are not in the trade.

There're so many synthetic rubies in the markets nowdays, make sure you have loop and UV light before making decision.. By using a loop u can clearly see internal spider web and the natural rubies should be fluorescent under UV light in dark room.. Thanks

In gemology we say that only the miner know where a rough come from. No pro gemologist will stat an origin on a certificate just on your word, unless the stone speak by itself. The origin is a big market value especially for the rubies and I have seen may "pro" making mistakes about it. It's not an easy game.

Hello, The best you can do is to find a gemologist that have a very good knowledge on colored stones. He can make you a certificate that will stat if the rough is natural and no treated (or treated). If there is enough information inside the stone to give the origin (inclusions), then you can have the origin on the certificate. BUT, there is very few peoples that have the knowledge to do that. The best for rubies are the AIGS lab, the GIA lab and the GIT Lab (university) in Bangkok.

Thanks, for me rubies are quite simple to know between synthetic and the natural, by using a loupe, you can see spider web in great details .. There're also other gems almost like it such as red tourmaline, rubelite, chatham etc, nevertheless it looked contrast by using a loupe..

I di not talk about the Flux synthetic ruby as they are rare on the market today. On another side, you need a gemo stereoscope to check and learn about the specific inclusions for each producers. A "spider web" can be seen in natural rubies. Strong magnification demonstrate the difference between flux remnants in flux and fluid inclusions of healing fissures in natural rubies, we are talking about power 100X, then the loupe is not enough until you really are a pro. The best way is spectrometry.

Market on the colored stone is not like for the diamond with a price list like Rapaport. Price could change from one day to another. Today ruby not treated is extremely rare on the market and very expensive, especially the one from Myanmar (Burma). Just heated stone are accepted in the market and even the Songea of very good quality and color (like in the video) is very expensive now and could reach easy 500$ per ct.

Hi, I would NEVER buy online. 1) the picture you see is never the one you'll get. They make one picture the best they can and after they sale the bad stuff base one that picture. 2) They do not disclose anything about treatment and for a ruby clarity I (Included) and for the price I saw, that surely a new glass treated ruby. 3) You never set in a 9K gold a ruby, unless it is a piece of crap!
