Your ceiling fan is making a noise. If your ceiling fan is whirring, clicking, scraping or grinding or buzzing or humming, it is telling you what the problem probably is. This video explains the most likely cause of your most common ceiling fan noises and what needs to be fixed.
If you need to repair your fan there are countless videos on KZfaq covering repairs. In addition, you can find most user manuals of common fans online. This video just covers how to identify the most common noises to help you fix your fan.
Before replacing a capacitor or doing any repairs to fix noises always make sure you have tightened all screws and oiled the unit as just doing those two things solves or reduces most noises.
I forgot to mention in the video, many older homes had fans installed a long time ago using dimmer switches. You often get humming with dimmer switches as most fans were not designed to operate on a dimmer switch.
Here are some customer service or company phone numbers of the most common fan makers.
Harbor Breeze Manufacturer phone number is 1 (800) 643 0067
Casablanca (888) 227-2178
Hampton Bay 855-434-2678
Hunter 888-830-1326

MonteCarlo 1-800-519-4092

I don't think you can blame that problem on throw away society. I believe that most people have no idea how to fix problems and just go replace the "defective" device. The people don't know how to problem solve, so throwing things away if their only option.

1:16 my father’s ceiling fan in his bedroom made that same noise that this fan made, and I was growing up wondering why it did that, but back in 2011 when I was 11 going on 12, I started playing around with his ceiling fan and tightened up the screws that on the blades of his ceiling fan, and it haven’t made that noise any more, and it’s been running quiet every since then.

I've got a window fan that I like but it makes a buzzing noise on low and medium but not on high, and it stops immediately when I turn the power off. From your video, it sounds like the capacitor is the problem. This is good info. I'll take it apart, lube it up, change the capacitor and hope that fixes it. This was the information I needed. Thanks!

Thanks so much for the help! Installed two second hand fans, and one was making a buzzing noise. Looked at other videos and thought it must be the bearings but we couldn’t get to them. Watched this video and thought it must be the capacitor, however reading through the comments made me realise that it was in fact because the wall switch is a double dimmer switch and it was turned too low on one side. We will look to replace the dimmer switch with normal switches. Thanks

Just as an add-on to this, I just had a ceiling fan installed and it was making the same noise as he showed in the first part of this video. stopped as soon as you would cut the power to the fan. the problem ended up being the adjustable fan speed knob that was on the wall hooked up to the fan. changed the knob for a switch and it fixed the issue. hope this helps someone out there!

Thanks Jordan, I think I mentioned the adjustable speed control in the video or comments but should gave emphasized it more. Most fans were not made to be used with such a switch and they do often cause problems. I appreciate you taking the time to leave a helpful 😎👌

What about a heavy duty switch? I don't have a speed control switch but one I have is white and it is little hard to turn up, it's a heavy duty one I think. I have a Hampton Bay Glendale ceiling fan and it makes a humming noise and so I figure it might be the switch but I had other fans in the past that were replaced and they never made a humming noise, I still had that wall switch so I don't know what the issue is. Might could replace the wall switch? Don't really want to replace the fan

Looks great, and with a brighter bulb installed that’s all the light you need. kzfaq.infoUgkxWF88GpljEn-0o34vtLFazEQ5h5Q33SjU As far as ease of installation- this was my first ceiling fan and it took about 3 hours because I had no idea what I was doing and also it’s helpful to have a second set of hands and a magnetic drill bit. Works great.

My clicks loud constantly on summer mode & a lot less on winter mode. Tried tightening up everything but didn’t work. Only thing that helps is pushing upwards with good amount pressure where the light bulbs goes to get it to stops clicking/scraping. Not sure how to fix it. It’s like a scraping noise every 2 passes

Hi, Robb. My fan makes a loud buzzing noise which stops instantly if I turn the fan off, so I'm guessing it's a capacitor issue. However, it also stops if I pull the chain (not all the way, just put a tiny bit of tension on it). Does this mean it's actually a different issue, or would you still say it's the capacitor?

Sir, recently installed a brand new ceiling fan. Pretty nice. Started to notice a clickickty click noise coming from motor. Almost like something is loose rattling around in there. It's most certainly coming from the brand new motor. I tried to shine a flashlight into it to find something, to no avail. There are holes on the top. Do you think its possible maybe a piece from the popcorn ceiling could have fallen inside the motor and is going round and round when its turned on? Or maybe just a faulty motor? Any advice would be much appreciated. If I took the motor apart to further inspect would it harm it? Someone told me it could be tight because its brand new and needs to break in. 🤷🏻‍♂️

There are surprising amount of parts that can be loose and rattle. If they are tight the motor itself should be pretty quiet.

Can running a fan with a thermostat control and a remote on 24/7 cause the buzzing electric sound. Mines on low almost all day long because i wanted it to be automatic. But now it has a buzzing noise like you described as the capacitor on high and medium and none on low except when going from medium to low. I just got the ceiling fan a few months ago, but have been running it nearly 24/7 because the room doesn't quite get down to tempeture for the thermostat remote. I bought the thermostat remote as a replacement for a basic remote that you turn on and off. All of them are hampton bay parts. I was hoping there would not be a problem.

Check to see everything is tight. In particular the bolts that attach the blades. If that does not help check your capacitor as mentioned in the video.

Hi Don here's what I would do first Start with the Simple Fixes: Tighten all screws and check for loose parts. Ensure the blades are balanced. Move to Electrical Checks: Test the capacitor with a multimeter and replace it if needed. Inspect the remote receiver and ensure it is properly isolated and securely connected. Motor and Bearings: Lubricate the motor bearings if accessible. Consider replacing the bearings if lubrication does not help.

My ceiling fan was making a clicking noise so I checked all the screws on the blades and there were a few loose. While I was working on it anyway, I decided to take the blades down and give them a cleaning. I took the light globes down and cleaned them too. The blades do not appear to be warped. When I assembled it all back together, there was a buzzing/vibrating noise. The fan turns ok (no hesitations) and there is a definite wobble but the noise is concerning. The noise is there regardless of fan speed and is still there even if power is turned off. So, not electrical and likely mechanical. Did I push dust into the motor and now have a motor issue? I don’t want to spend a bunch of time trying to balance the wobble if the motor is shot and I have to replace it anyway. There is no oil hole and the manual says that, “The motor has permanently lubricated bearings. There is no need to oil.” The fan did not make this noise before I cleaned it. It is a 20 year old Harbor Breeze model CHT52WW5LK. I don’t want to replace it if I don’t have to because it is in the bedroom of a high risk individual so I can’t have anyone in to install it and I’m not capable of doing it myself. Here is a link to a video of the noise. The video isn’t the greatest but it is kind of like the buzzing of an insect caught in there. (It’s not that though.) Did I kill it by cleaning it?kzfaq.info/get/bejne/orR_qamA37GbiaM.html

Hi Debbie. You are right I think, if the noise continues after the power is turned off it should be mechanical. Something may be loose or out of balance. You can add washers to the blade fasteners and check other parts to make sure they are tight. if the blades are bent or out of balance there are small weights you can add to balance them. Just work on one thing at a time until you find out what is causing the noise.

Robb's Homemade Life Thanks for the response. Hi, thanks for the response. Is it safe to remove the blades and run the fan to see if it makes the noise without the blades? All the blades have washers and I still makes the noise at a slow speed. The sound didn’t start until after I removed the blades to clean them and then put them back.

@@debbiekleinberg I don't see a problem doing that. If it turns out there is a problem with the blades you can buy a blade balancing kit for a few dollars at Home depot or Loews. The only thing I would do is probably what you are already doing which is to check and make sure everything is tight and not loose.

It's likely because of the disturbance that caused the noise. Just let it run and the centrifugal force will help put everything back in place. My husband got overzealous in cleaning and it made all kinds of noise when he was done. It eventually quieted.

Hi Mike, usually a grinding noise is coming from the motor. But I would imagine it would make the same noise in reverse. The only things I can think of is to go over the fan and tighten everything up and if that doesn't fix it to add some lubrication to the motor.

I would have to agree with you. If it was making a humming noise I would tell you to see if you had a dimmer switch that operated the fan. So many times the dimmer switch will make a humming noise in fans. Sometimes after a while the dimmer switches stop working.

Ok so I haven't seen this issue here yet. My son accidentally hit the fan blade while it was spinning and now it doesn't turn at all. I can hear the motor humming when I turn on the power. Do you think the capacitor is a designed safety mechanism (like a breaker or fuse) to stop the motor in the event of an object hitting it? Thanks in adavance.

@RobbsHomemadeLife Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what the answer is. I would look at where the shaft of the motor is that connects to the part the blades are attached to. There may be a sheer pin like the kind you have on a propeller on an outboard motor.

What about a surging noise from the motor? When on High speed?
@RobbsHomemadeLife
@RobbsHomemadeLife 21 күн бұрын
If the noise continues even after you turn off the fan it could be a large amount of things however if the noise stops as soon as you turn off the switch it's likely one of four problems Motor Issues: The motor itself may be failing or experiencing electrical problems. When the motor runs at high speed, these issues can manifest as surging noises. Overheating, worn bearings, or internal electrical faults could be to blame. Capacitor Problems: the capacitor helps regulate the fan's speed. A faulty capacitor can cause the motor to operate irregularly, leading to surging noises at high speeds. Electrical Wiring: Loose or faulty wiring connections within the fan or in the switch housing could cause intermittent power delivery to the motor, resulting in the surging noise. Switch Issues: The switch itself could be faulty, especially if it is a variable speed switch or has dimmer capabilities. Inconsistent power delivery from a faulty switch could cause the surging noise. Usually it's the dimmer switch or capacitor

If your capacitor is bad you have to replace it. Sometimes you can get away with pushing the fan blades to get it going but the problem will not get better. There are videos on KZfaq on how to replace the capacitor. You can buy them on Amazon or even Home Depot and Lowe's. If you have bad bearings in your motor it could cause your capacitor to go bad and replacing it won't solve the issue.
