The only thing that is more traumatising than these fatalities is knowing the relationship between these characters ripping each other apart.

I remember this story of when this game dropped and some of the programmers had to seek therapy after making this game for symptoms of PTSD. Those programmers traumatized THEMSELVES for our entertainment. That’s dedication.

Shang Tsung's second fatality shows him actually resurrecting kintaro, one of Shao Kahn's (late and former) Mortal Kombat Champions Also, friendships were a thing they introduced in mk2 in response to the angry politicians and parents not liking fatalities

If you think the licensed DLC characters for MK11 are crazy, you need to react to MKX (The title before) because they have the likes of both Jason Voorhees and Leatherface

The reason a lot of these characters don't look quite right is because they're using alternate costumes that change their primary colors or change them into alternate versions of themselves who may be evil or zombies or evil zombies.

You may not know this but Noob Saibot (portal guy) is named after the last names of the two original creators of the series spelled backwards. Ed Boon (Noob) and John Tobias (Siabot). 👍👍😆

I forgot when this was said in an interview but Ed Boon did say that some of the Fatalities, at least for MK 1, had to be balanced between over the top gore and absolutely absurd to ridiculous levels. I think he did say that there are some things they can’t make and there are “some” levels of restraint, if there are any, that they have to follow. I know that in MK 9 the dlc character Skarlet got NRS in some hot water because her fatalities included bathing in her opponents blood which is part of her character but also really pushed the envelope back then.

In the second Rambo fatality they didn't get electrocuted in half. Rambo put ammo around their waist and then kicked them into the electricity. The belt had so much ammo and it all went off at the same time so it sawed through the opponent

That's how a fair few characters first started out. A simple recolour of Sub Zero or Scorpion just with different moves and over the year, they started gaining their own personality styles and designs. For example. Another thing to help clarify some of these characters, a lot of them can be grouped into several categories based on when they debut and from the era they were in like the arcade era, the 3D era, and the modern era. The classic arcade era is easy because they're associated with their uprising like killing your opponents after the fight is over and doing crazy ideas that range from amazing effects for the time or funny ideas that made no sense (the concept of killing your opponents expanded into Brutalities which required a multi button input for your character to beat up your opponents until they literally blew up, animalities where you transformed into an animal to kill/maul your opponent, Friendships which was a response to the violence backlash and the dev's way of having fun, and Babalities where you just humiliate your opponents by changing them into literal toddlers to just cry), the 3D era characters were the unique and experimental bunch when MK tried to convert from 2D arcade games with real life character sprites into 3D models (a mix of both good and bad ideas that came with hidden gems and poor decisions to help establish what worked and what didn't work), and the modern era/modern era/ NRS reboot are the modern games where Nether Realm Studios started their company and took the series back to their roots with new ideas and new events (usually relying on nostalgia but also respecting their past entries with more experimental ideas that branched out into new directions such as changing the future and fleshing out past characters to give them more depth and identities).
