The last time I saw my father was when I walked out of the front door and this old Marine was weeping like a child begging for me to stay. I left him alone in a dark house. I was in the Army and had to return to my unit because we were deploying. My father passed away 3 weeks later.

James wrote this song so his father could know the depths of his love. Happily, because of the popularity of the song, a donor was found and he was able tp get the transplant and survived. This whole performance is as heartbreaking as it is beautiful. They are two men on that stage who have lost their dads and the support James Blunt offers Iam is so genuine. Even though James's father survived, I truly believe that both of their fathers were on the stage that night. Also props to Jelly Roll for supporting Iam's mom in the audience.

My father passed away in January last year. Hearing this song made my heart break again. Knowing how iam feels I can relate to his pain.

Ok where do I start and don’t take it personal. I’m a 67 year young disabled housebound widow. This is the first time watching one of your reactions and needless to say probably the last. Are you human at all? Whether you knew the background or not you didn’t show any signs of emotion that millions of people have felt every time Iam has sang any of the songs he has sang on American Idol.
