Something you might mention in a video such as this is to use a container that has a larger diameter at the top than at the bottom. Seems a simple thing, but once you've had to remove a tree from a container with a rounded type shape, you'll understand. It's to hard to get the root ball out without damaging the tree. Speaking with the voice of experience.

Thank you, I was just choosing a pot that was rounded and never took this into consideration.

More experience! A friend dug up a seedling and raised it in a pot for several years before she gave it to me. The pot was shaped like an amphora (so constructed at top) and made of fiberglass. I tried everything to get that tree out of the pot, including trying to cut the fiberglass pot. I finally took a knife and cut the heck out of those roots. I thought for sure I had killed it. Today it is about 15 feet high, but the trunk is slightly bent. I wonder if I did that to it.

Top Advice here! All of my JMs are in pots/containers. All said pots are raised on bricks or wooden struts to bring it off the ground. All my pots contain drainage crocs/hydroponic clay balls and then a decent blend of composts ideally suited to JMs. Fine Pine bark, ericaceous and a general John Innes Compost No2 or No3 all thoroughly mixed together and then the JM is potted to the correct height. Finally I use a top mulch of horticultural grit to keep moisture evaporation down. Mind you, I have birds that eat the grit to aid digestion within their crops. Get a decent JM and an attractive Terracotta Pot then you know your onto a winner! Oh and one other thing to bear in mind: if your going to have a potted JM in a pot out in your front garden then do opt for a large heavy pot. It will make it difficult to be stolen by some low-life or reprobate that would like to pick it up and run off with it!

What kind of containers? Any big size container which is not a terracotta never has holes or just one hole in the bottom.

I just get the inexpensive thick growers black container which already has great drainage holes. They are sold in most garden centers. They come in multiple sizes, can easily size up. I then just slip it into a more decorative ceramic container of course with a drainage hole to finish the look. A pot in a pot… is the easiest term.

I use leftover composite decking for pot feet. I rip the deck board in half then cut those halves into one inch'ish wide feet. They are cheap, look good, last virtually forever, and are soft enough to be easy on ceramic pots. Couple of board feet makes a lot of feet. I've got a bucket of them and have given away dozens of them.

All of my JMs are in terracotta pots of various sizes. A few are in plastic pots used as intermediaries before after a year or two they then get re-potted Into nice terracotta pots. I guess the best aspect of having such Acers in pots, you can move them around your garden to see where they adapt the best and also to how it sets the theme and drama to your garden setting.

@@Nicholas-db5sl agreed!! As much as I love terra cotta, I have to stick with light weight containers for my JM so that I can move them when necessary. But terra cotta is definitely the most beautiful🪴🪴🪴

Ok. I need help. Can you do a quick video or guide me to it if you have it already!? I bought a dwarf maple in a super large heavy pot 2-3 years ago at a local nursery. 1- can it stay in that plastic pot indefinitely? 2- if I want to put in ground, how do I get it out of the container without hurting it (or me) 😮 3- how & when do I re-pot this giant heavy ball? (I’ve never even seen the roots)! I’m in zone 5b midwest. Thank you so much & speaking of Great Danes- they actually make good small apartment pets because they’re super calm & rest a lot! My sister has one in her tiny condo & he’s happy! She takes him for walks often and dog parks & hiking every week too! 😊

Keep your Japanese Maple containers out of full sun!!! The few times I've lost maples and conifers is because of keeping them in full sun (8+ hours) and forgetting to check them for 4-5 days... this is in Oregon 8b too!!!! So it doesn't have to be a HOT ZONE to fry and send them downward spiral to death!!!!!!
