How did Fairy Hair not make the top 5? Honorable Mention? Wow! Talon has so so many great introductions it would be so difficult to put them in any order without having to change them around every time you look at the list. But Fairy Hair should definitely have been on this list.

All awesome trees. I didn’t know here found/ named most of these. I loved learning the history behind the trees. #japanesemaples

In my humble opinion, and I truly mean humble - I have so much respect for you guys, having met you and visited the nursery twice, and having learned so much from you - this list puts way too much emphasis on cultivars that look great for just a few weeks in the spring and that's it. Or more specifically, the photo of a single leaf in the spring looks spectacular, but the tree in your yard in mid-summer from 20 feet away is completely uninspiring. Perfect example is Purple Ghost. Of course, finding exactly the right spot for it is important to keep it looking its best, but every specimen I've ever seen by July is just a so-so looking scraggly tree with a crumpled plain red leaf showing minimal reticulation. No one gets excited about a humble classic like Beni Kawa (for example) anymore, but for my money, like many other now overlooked classics, it way outshines any of these ghost/post-ghost cultivars by looking fabulous absolutely every single day of the year. My 2c worth, and I'm sure it's not even worth that. P.S. I just bought a Celebration from you guys, now looking forward to spring! Ha

@@MrMapleShow Hi guys! Yes, I realized that, and actually considered qualifying my statements above, but felt like I had already typed plenty. Indeed, this video was just top Buchholz introductions, but I guess I'm just trying to start a discussion that I've never really heard elsewhere, regarding the extreme focus on the appearance of a single leaf for the first few weeks of spring rather than the overall contribution of the tree to the landscape. Another example is Japanese Princess, and perhaps most of the newer Mikawa types as well. I've seen very healthy nice-sized specimens of Japanese Princess in nurseries in early May that have already greened out and look simply like a smaller Mikawa yatsabusa. Now of course there is nothing wrong with "just a smaller Mikawa yatsabusa", and there's nothing wrong about growing a tree in your yard to enjoy single leaves for a few weeks - to each his own - but I just wanted to throw this out there. Maybe I'm the only one?

I definitely understand and share some of the same feelings. I first started buying Japanese Maples thinking they looked like the pictures year around .. not realizing most of what I was buying were showing spring or fall pictures. So, now I focus on trees that have a lot to offer year around and a tree's growing habit.

When I bought Celebration 2 years ago I was pretty "meh" on it. But good lord it survived a deer eating every leaf and some branches and bounced back even harder this year. The form factored and coloring is incredible and I've been blown away. I moved it in front of my Jordan this Spring and look at that pairing every day.

On a more serious note, given your comments about the heritage of a given plant as it relates to its parent, is it possible that the entire set of DNA for maples exists in every plant and only certain genes are activated to produce the actual plant? And I wonder also, have y'all thought about CRISPR and what that might bring for creating new sub-species?

Hi guys 😄Question. Those plants behind You are just dry or plastic? You do have so many evergreens there. This doesn't suit to You 😉🤪 (my opinion). Maybe something alive would be better. Big thanks for everything You do 💞
