Peavey Vypyr X1 (Cheap Amp That Does It All)
Is this little cheap modelling amp too good to be true? It certainly sounds so. It does it all, and costs next to nothing. That sounds like a fishy combination, but let's see shall we?
Enjoy!
Seems there was some kind of glitch when exporting this, and it's missing the final seconds. Well, no harm done.

I decided to get the X2 for my bedroom to play guitar in so I wouldn’t have to move all heavy stacks of amps and cabs into my room. It’s a very great budget amp and it’s super nice since I can get most of the effects i currently use on my main pedal board on it

I sold my EVH 5150iii to get a Peavey Invective 120, After that I had some extra money and bought the 6505 120 those two amplifiers are AMAZING!! Quality is great very well made on both amplifiers, I’ve gigged with them both and they’ve held up nicely. I’ve owned a Mesa dual rec, EVH 5150iii and I can hands down say that to my ears Peavey has won me over. I grew up playing through my dad’s Peavey triple x. Those other brands are great products don’t get me wrong I’m not knocking them at all.. but for me personally the Peavey Invective 120 and 6505 120 have that perfect balance of chunky saturated gain tones with balls to them you can feel it in your chest when you hit a power chord on those amplifiers. I’ve dropped foot switches and everything has held up to it still working nicely. My experience with Peavey has been great one time I had a tube break during shipping from the place I bought the amp from and Peavey paid for me a new tube to replace it. Customer service has always been great, the guy working the customer service has always been friendly no complaints. Some people may be bitter over Peavey’s past choices, as for me I only have good things to say.

I had the original Vyper 1 (15watts) and noticed a point of vibration as well. Finally, I took out the original speaker, screwed and glued a 1/4" plywood board inside the front cabinet wall and installed a 10" Klipsch 150-watt speaker inside. No more resonance and great sound.

I've had a Peavey Vypyr VIP 2 which I used for giggning (smaller venues, miked up with SM57s) and also (believe it or not) for some DIY recording (we recorded an EP during the 2020 lockdown and the Vypyr was the only thing available for me). It's got a lot of sounds and stuff, but after about three years all those digital knobs stopped working (I could only use them if I connected to a PC and modified the settings in the app) and also the headphone jack stopped working. That resonance was present, specially at higher volumes, and I believe it's because the cabinet itself is poorly built, the wood is too thin for such a loud speaker (mine being the 40w version). The 6505 and XXX simulators are the best sounding thing on these things, but the other models, you really got to fiddle with them to get some good tones (the Fender Twin is really good for cleans). I would get one again, but I am worried the same problems from the previous generation will transfer to the new one (such as the digital knobs ceasing to respond properly after a few years).

Yes! That's exactly what I experienced with my boss katana mk2 100w which I sold after a few days with it... Suddenly my old DIY Champ(without any eq) sounded better than this new beast loaded with effects and presets.. Also it feels artificial to play, quite like computer plugins. I'd better have 1 great tone than 100 average ones. And the amount of tweaks on modeling apms is overwhelming. I would doubt if I could set up a better tone instead of playing. In this regard less is more, at least for me

I agree wholeheartedly with one exception: Fenders GTX 50. The tones that I get out of that amp are incredible and the more the speaker breaks in the better it sounds. The app to dial in tones is super user friendly and the tones are awesome. I've tried other modeling amps but again, they sound like crap because they're trying to do so much. Fender did their homework before they put out their amps.

I have a Vypyr VIP 2 I bought used, and it's a great amp. Definitely none of that buzzing. The great thing about it is it isn't obsolete. Has all the same amps and effects as the new X models, just without the extra bluetooth bells and whistles. Still sounds great. Seems like these modeling amps can only go so far. They can add more amp sounds and more effects, but the older ones are still perfectly serviceable and available on the used market for relatively cheap.

Hi Elmo thank you for all of your reviews. I was at a major music store today and tried out Katana, Catalyst and Vyper. I stumbled upon some sounds in the Vyper 2 that were absolutely massive and beautiful it was in the 6505 model with a little chorus it sounded like the lead break of La Villa Strangalato from Rush. I was looking for that rattling buzzy aftertone you experienced but did not experience that with the one I tried.. Feature wise the Katana won hands down and sounded good but nothing like the massive sound of that Vyper. And I love Line 6 but that Catalyst amp is dull and uninspiring to my ears ( and to the ears of the salespeople apparently judging from their grimace lol). Thank you again for your reviews.

Great video. I agree it's mostly subjective. I definitely could hear that resonance. Wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. I feel like the performance is on par with the price. The tones on the video sounded fine for the most part and the playing was excellent which is the most important thing. New and younger players are way too quick to blame the guitar, pickups, amp, etc... Great players like this guy will always sound pretty good on just about anything. Most folks wouldn't know good tone if it slapped them in the face because there ear isn't trained to know the difference. What sounds cool in your room by yourself doesn't always work in a band setting. You have to be able to adjust on the fly to different conditions. Older experienced players can dial in decent tones out of just about anything. I have the big 120 watt 6L6 tube version of this amp. Scooped it up for 125 dollars used. Crazy luck. It is a beast of an amp. I run it on a cheap 412 crate cab. I'm extremely happy with it. The cons are mainly 1. Learning how to operate and navigate all the options. 2. Most pre sets have crack head levels of gain so they aren't useable most of the time and noisy. And 3. You need the pedal to switch sounds unless you want to constantly push buttons on the amp. Lastly 4. It has a built in noise gate that sucks. You can't adjust it so you can't roll the knob down on the guitar to clean up your tone like on a non digital amp. However you can dial in great tones of your own, save the pre sets and your ready to rock. Btw my other rig on the other side of my room is a 6505+ half stack with Sheffield speakers. Sheffield speakers are the Peavey version of a vintage 30. Of course it sounds killer. I have expensive gear to compare it to. I'm about to pick up the baby version of this vypr for 50 bucks. Just something to lug around that's cheap, light weight and versatile. It checks all the boxes for me so I like these amps. I agree that the entry level smaller versions aren't going to be as good. That's why they are cheap. Learn to dial in what you have and learn to play vs thinking gear is holding you back. Jimmy Hendrix would sound killer on a squire and a pawn shop gorilla amp with six inch speaker. Maybe I will do an update about the small amp in a couple days. This video and channel is great. I enjoyed it. Keep rocking.

The amp lights up, the pedal lights up, no sound. I did a factory reset after I unplugged the sanpera from the vypyr x2. Still no sound, at all. I checked my cable, it's fine. I tried to use my wireless with it, the wireless is fine. Just no sound no matter what I try.. what gives? I reached out to peavey. And haven't received a response.. pretty unhappy at the moment. I'd hate to have to return it. Killer sounding amp before this happened.

Boy those marketing people that wrote that start are boring huh. 😂 I actually played a 60 watt viper that had power tubes awhile back, a few years ago and it sounded ok. 🤘♥️ Katana is just hard to beat. I've been using a tube amp lately. It's a 60 watt 1 x 12 that can be switched to a 20 watts with 6v6 power tubes. I really like it cranked, but the Katana is to me as good believe it or not. Peavey used to make the 5150 in the EVH days. When he blew Peavey off Peavey just rebranded the 5150 as the 6505. They're a great deal. On the other hand I have a VYPER VIP-1 that I bought new. It's crazy that I have to hunt around on KZfaq to figure out how to use it. I've had a recording studio for decades and this is one of the PITA$$ pieces of gear that I've had to sort out. I agree with you that it tries to do everything and it doesn't do anything well. I prefer the Monoprice (Stage Right) 15W Tube Amp with 1X12 Celestion speaker for just a bit more. I paid $200.00 for it on sale. (which is why I'm just starting to figure this POS thing out). I won't spend the money for a Mesa Boogie with a 1 X 10 Celestion (10/25W) for $2,100.00. They do kick @$$ though.

Great video Elmo !!! So ... here is what they did right with this ..... the design/look of the amp itself ... they should have done this wayy back when they launched the gen one models. Hell ... they " Vypyr " name in itself I think was also a big marketing blunder by Peavey cause EVERYONE with the demo's of the amps asumed these where only high gain amps. BUT as those whom took the chance on a Gen 1 solid state or tube model found out they had a great emulation of amp models. Despite the flaws/issues in the Gen 1 models ... IF you could manage to get the Sanpera controllers with them .. they where great stand alone amps if you just wanted to plug in & throw a ok onboard effect on here & there. At the end of the day though .... these are just "re-boxed" VIP series amps of the Gen 2's .. ( which they made some improvements in but also some blunders as well ). I've owned a Gen 1 Vypyr 30 (solid state), Gen 1 Tube ( tube 60 with sanpera 2 controller - these where the best ones to get ) & a Gen 2 VIP 40 ( bass & acoustic amp elements brought to it + better usb dac). I never got a chance to own or check out the Gen 3 Vypyr Pro cause they killed it after 3+ years of launch/development delays that allowed competition to catch up with them. ( Gen 3 aka Vypyr Pro had the most potental as it was more brought to a guitar only focus, added better effects, amps, reverb & delay options + able to move the patch banks around / stack more then 3 effects or amps together at once AND brought a effects look into the mix !! BUT $600+ usa price point + competition killed it ). And Peavey being forced to move production to china + kill quality to compete is what has brought them to this "Vypyr X" product you reviewed here. Final thoughts on it all ..... Peavey ... ESPECIALLY with the Tube enhanced Vypyrs ( 12AX7 pre-amp/buffer + 2 or 4 6L6 power sectioned Tube 60 & 120 Head's/Combo's ) would have had the market long before Line 6, AxeFX, Kemper, Boss Katana & etc. A name change & a few tweaks like I mentioned above way back in the Gen 1 days would have cemented them MANY sales. In the end ... best thing peavey REALLY should have done with the line ... is do what is being shown by the Sparks & Sparks Mini amps.

I’ve got an original vypyr 30. I agree it’s really good for what it was. It had a lot of potential but a few major flaws. If they’d worked those out 10 years ago Peavey might be in a better place these days For a 12 year old modeling amp it makes some nice sounds. I don’t think it would be optimal for recording but definitely great for practice and rehearsal; fantastic beginner amp! Mine starts having problems when I get fancy with the foot switch, trying to use it for effects and amp switching; sometimes will freeze and the amp has to be turned off and on. Also, the knobs are very flimsy, and instead of making static when dirty they tend to not do anything at all. For $300 new, including the foot switch, it is amazing! Used they’re about $130 now. However, there are other options and I’d probably be more likely to get a single purpose amp than a Jack of all trades

Ughh!!! Modelling amps SUCK! I only play at home these days but I have absolutely no use for the damned things. Might be useful for home recording I guess but I have a pretty comprehensive pedal board and I can switch between fx on the fly. And what happens when the electronics go kaput (and they will)? Way cheaper to replace an fx pedal, with the added bonus that I can still use my amp. Note: I'm on a budget and I have an old Peavey Audition 25w USA-made amp that has 2 channels and a footswitch. Job done!

@@jonathanpeden9930 I think they put too many features in the amps. They need to narrow down to 3 amps, maybe 5 effects, and make the switching simple. Do these things really well and don’t charge $1000 like a Fender toneking. I actually like the idea of the toneking series, except I don’t trust them not to crap out after ten years. If solid state actually sounded like a tube I’d forget all about tubes. They’re getting pretty close now

This review raised my curiosity. Elmo didn't go into much of a guitar solo with this demonstration. The angry bee sound must really upset a professional musician. Was this a problem only with this amp? The website showed that Peavey has lowered the price from $300 to $200. Given that guitar stuff was selling like hotcakes until recently due to Covid, this indicates a potential problem with all the amps of this model. This is particularly true in these inflationary times where prices go up and not down. Elmo said, "Angry bees with chainsaws" Wow! Looks like they tried to make a swiss army knife amp. Good thing I'm happy with my ubiquitous Japanese amp that Elmo also didn't like. Thanks for the very good review.

So many peavey amp owners have encountered a buzzy top end. It has led many to change tubes (from Sovtek to JJs) and/or change speakers. So many Peavey Classic 30 owners have swapped out the Blue Marvel speaker for a Weber Blue Dog, Eminence Wizard, Celestion Vintage 30. Peavey Valve King amps always sounded better with an Eminence Texas Heat or perhaps Swamp Thang. In the case of this amp, I would swap the speaker for a Texas Heat and I am sure it would take out the fizz

Thanks for the honesty in your reviews, it is very important for the community that they are not biased. I am not surprised that such kind of amps(not only from Peavey) find their way in the market. As a guitar teacher, you know that especially beginners buy their own equipment without consulting and they just throw money out of the window. These kind of amps can also be sold in guitar bundles, it would be easy to sell them to people that don't know much about equipment. What makes me sad, is because of shitty equipment(guitars also), many beginners are demotivated and stop playing after some weeks or months. Elmo, keep playing great, keep reviewing the way you do!

Exactly I don’t know what these people are talking about! They are good amps. There’s a couple tricks to make them sound better!! One I have the back is completely open, so I enclosed it! Now it thunders. The Vypyr 2 I have I plugged that hole they put in the back. It sounds better. Since the sound is forced through the front and not lost through the back!

Speaking of cabs, I do believe that these VIP cabinets may be rather fragile and are prone to either obvious or invisible shipping damage by rough or careless handling. If I remember correctly, my VIP3 that I picked up myself from the store had almost no shipping protection in the box, if any, which gave me the impression that it was "one tough beast" but alas, I was likely wrong since even the plastic corner guards are very flimsy and can easily crack even though I handle all of my stuff as if it was made of eggs. Oh well...$300, what can you say?@@jeremyswalley8625

ive used a 30w vypyr for years. i kinda helps if you learn how to use it. you're allowed to cut that delay btw triple rec model...cut mids and you get a perfect silky , touch sensitive high gain lead. try using one of those compression boxes in front of a clean Vox or an overdrive, or a playing style. you can't just breeze through presets and get pissed at the amp for not knowing how to set up an amp...js ive tried almost every modeler and vypyrs are the most responsive and playable.

I'm playing for years and years and I typically only play tube amps I don't like modeling amps much although the the Vox valvetronix single Tube It was kind of awful it's kind of convenient just for a quick you just do me like just a quick Buck around. I always used to bands predominately for everything. Surprised when I picked up and play this hand because it does have way more power than 820 w I've ever had not had a bunch of old peevish it amps. Is that play bass to and you know it I was actually surprised this thing is better sounding than some of the other people are seeing on this thread and the guy who did this video he just kind of bending and agreeing with people on the thread on the comments section. But I don't agree I was actually surprised I'm not saying the same to deepest a the world but the amount of power that it has surprised me I was actually trying to figure out if there was a single tube for a Mazda in this thing. And the effects natone are better than any of the other multi-effects amps of played before even better than developer Tronics or the Marshall valvestate or any of those hybrid amps. I'm pushing my son to get a really good too bad I still think this was a great early and for him to seize a good first a better than the first amp if you had to suffer with a transistor a nap that has effects this one actually does pretty damn well. The simple fact or the Walmart fact are not going to be anything anyone's looking for. And Distortion tones are the best in the world but same time the pretty fucking good for what you're paying for handles and it does some things just like a real tube amplifier and I was kind of surprised. I played a shitload of old crappy gear and I've also played a lot of tube amps in my life. This thing definitely has a high game handling like a mosfet or tube that is attractive. I typically only like the high-voltage sound. I'm 43 and I've been playing since I was 15 and I have tried all sorts of gear out there starting off mystery regular Metalhead stuff going through all sorts of metal gear into a guitar synthesizers and also it's a various digital and Roland gear. Back to all sorts of classic and Boutique Old amps and old rare guitar pedals and rare synthesizers through old 60s guitar amplifiers able to do things that most guitars these days don't even know about experimental sounds and crazy warped out stuff that you can get old tube amps to do the new tube amps just don't do shit is most of the quote tube amps you people are playing not real tube amps with their solid state rectifier chips anyways all these supposed to have some people are going in buying at Guitar Center for the past 20 years 30 years had a few tubes but aren't that great and sound quality anybody can see she looked something like Harmony central.com. trying to figure out why your buddies rating brand new tube amps are supposed to be so great with such low numbers yeah old generic 1960s guitar amps agent piece of shit I getting tens in sound quality. I've played some of them so I know that that is not wrong. Stop my number one amplifiers I looking for amps with rectifier tubes no circuit boards as of this point I play with mostly classic rock and experimental psychedelic type sounds cast for Modern amp to practice with is just a $200 for $300 a things actually fantastic you looking for just a practice a something you just want your kids to have that can sound like rock metal that kind of thing it's a great amp that kind of thing. Personally I'd rather go with an old rare app off of eBay if it has the right components inside of it. The last one I got is a Harmony h303a aercap most people don't know about yeah it was made in 62 in America made America to Jensen speaker made in Chicago why live by. And the thing gets tense of sound quality from most people and you can completely freak it out create crazy sagging effects Wicked buzzsaw affects all sorts of things you can never get these modern aims to do. I stopped off and I picked up a the guitar shop an old analog distortion pedal on the earliest boss pedals the most suck and are not analog they are cosm which means fake trash. This one was a turbo overdrive sounds like a tube screamer those more balls I'll sit there and play bunch really distorted classic rock and old metal. And everyone at their shop agreed this 62 app the generic brand are not sounded way better than any of these modern tube amps their solid-state rectifier trash. So you see I want a real tube amp! Be at your probably going to get an app that's not a real tube amp even Marshalls sells the garbage nowadays. Good go with Mesa Boogie honestly the best tube rectifier amps truly are the old ones as you can walk the sound and get sounds out of your amplifier but you cannot get nowadays these things I'll have circuit boards they're all trash.

Elmo - I just love your videos and enjoy your playing a lot but this time there's something I don't fully agree on - how can you test a modelling amp that's clearly targeted towards heavy metal loving users and use the SSS guitar on heavy presets - and than complain the sound is not clear. I've seen couple of tests of this amp and the testing guys were all ready for the filthy sounds which for them were quite satisfying. I get it - it doesn't do all as it sais and it's not the best in the lighter music department - but some of the classic Peavey sounds were there and were spot on. Maybe the amp is broken, maybe there is some buzz but from my perspective this is not that bad of an amp if you expect it to deliver some sounds from the heavy side. I agree that there are many better amps that overall produce better pack of sounds but I guess people buiyng Peavey amp more or less know what to expect from this line of products. But being a valve amps using guy I guess you have completely different perspective on the sound that you expect and I respect that. From my perspective however - using mostly modelling amps for heavy sound - this sound is quite acceptable. Cheers!

Old Peaveys are hard to beat....the newer ones, is another story. I've got an old 5150, and it's incredible. I've got an old Renown, its a war horse, heck I've even got a blue stripe Bandit that I use. Granted none of the smaller ones are a Fender Tweed, but they're good. When the plant in Mississippi changed ownership the quality went down the "tube". Nobody can't doubt the 5150's and the sound and power.....but the new ones, I'll pass. I agree it's likely the 18" speaker causing some of the issues with vibrations, but the sound quality? That falls on piss poor electronics.

There are a bunch of demos where a reviewer says "I don't like this" and I think "it's not that bad," but here... Man, that resonance is unforgivable. The original Vypyr 15 did the same thing but fortunately it was the chintzy plastic "batwing" fascia on the front that was easily removed. This is just... bad. And doesn't sound good either. The Fender Mustang LT25 kicks this thing's butt all day long; the Princeton, Hiwatt, and Supersonic sounds are so good on that thing it's unbelievable.
