If the power feed works for you who cares what the negative ones have to say. If we hadn't let the imagination in us to at least try things we would still be travelling by horse and buggies. As a hobby machinist I get very good ideas from the videos of you all who post them. Remember Lee if only 1 person learns something from watching your videos then you have given him or her something no one can take away from them. I personal love the projects and things you post. Thanks for the time and work you put into them to share with us.

Great job, it looks like it's supposed to be there! I did something similar on my elite ar5-e tool and cutter grinder, based on your design.I mounted the bodine gear motor to the machine frame though, on a pivot where the drill attachment would normally go. On the table i have a block with a 3/4" shaft (for the reciprocating arm to mount to)To handle the y axis table travel (only 5") i have a 5/8" thomson shaft mounted (90 degree)on the adjustable x axis motor sliding block. The arm has two side by side roller bearings that attach to the 3/4" table shaft, on the other end is 5/8" thomson linear bearing. The linear bearing and shaft handle the 5" y travel. The x axis length adjustment part is almost identical to yours. I mounted it to the frame so the arm can be removed, the motor is on a pivot and can be swung out of the way when in regular use. Less than 2 minutes setup time. Next is a 50:1 worm wheel on the z axis. The worm gear gets attached to the backside of the z axis adjustment handle, the worm gets mounted to z axis body/frame, one turn of the worm is two thousands z travel. It flips up out of the way for regular use. It's also apart for maintenance and servo motor drive upgrade for spindle and new spindle bearings. I will post it when finished.

Nice job and great explanation. I'm going to make one for my grinder. Lee, consider grinding the magnetic chuck in place to get it dead on 0.0000. Turn the magnetic chuck on and grind it's full length and width in one setting. Always measure the chuck run-out with the chuck on too. Also consider upping the linear velocity of the table about 25%. You will get a ripple free finish. For reference the table speed should be about as fast as windshield wipers on high.

I made this modification to my surface grinder recently. I did decide to mount the motor rigidly to the cross slide. I must say it works wonderfully. Its smooth as butter and quiet as a church mouse. Wonderful idea! Thanks for sharing your idea.

Thanks for the info on the grinder power feed. I thought you were using a stepper motor setup. You do excellent work Mr. Pragmatic Lee. That 29 minutes went fast. Time flies when you're watching an interesting video. Thanks! 'Til next time....Keep Machining!

Hi Lee nice to be here and have some shared time with you in the shop. What a great arm for your surface grinder we are very impressed, you really did no longer wish to grind by hand in the x axis. We did not know we have the same PM1127 as you do (we never need a lang bar feed action for ours, we just love KZfaq always learning. It the PM is our general shop 1 off piece maker when we need a part or tool part larger then our micro machine lathes can produce. Thank you for sharing with us, Lance & Patrick.

I'm willing to suggest that the added weight and pressure from the drive motor is causing the deviation on the right side of the table ? Love the fabrication work and highly appreciate you sharing this. Just picked up a Boyer and Schultz myself hoping to get up to speed on these machining processes that my father put away long ago. Brought home my first mill recently and he lit up as he ran a Bridgeport for 10 years before his prototyping/maintenance mechanic carrier . I'm hoping to get some hands on with him before time takes control of the situation. Love the videos Mr Pragmatic,

Thank you for showing your power feed. Great design. I have a suggestion for making it a little simpler to adjust the stroke length. Cut a slot in your arm to accept a through stud in the center with a hand lock nut to retain it to your motor adapter. Modify your motor adapter with a female slot to accept the arm and no outside cover. There are lots of ways to add power feed to a grinder. I was thinking about using a stepper motor to drive the hand wheel via a belt, and use limit switches to set the travel ends. Your solution appears to work very well. The only issue is the oscillating travel speed, but it doesn't look like it's causing you any problems.

I like the power feed, very clever. I would love to have a spider on the outboard side of my lathe but so far I have not made one. Too lazy I guess. Do not pay any attention to the nay sayers and the rain cloud onlookers. If they do not understand it then it has to be bad in their opinion. I have been watching you since you got started on youtube and if you say something will work I have every reason to believe it will.

You can grind that magnetic chuck in right as it sits on the machine. It's a simple thing to do. You should be able to get that thing dialed in perfectly. The only thing that would prevent it from being prefect, or close to it, would be wear in the ways.

Great modifications! You have some of the best projects on KZfaq imho. I have a lathe just like yours but it's called "Nova 290vf". The lock nut you took of is used to adjust the spindle bearings. Have you made any locking feature on the spider?

Simple and effective. Any thoughts on something similar as a powerfeed for the other axis? You’re a smart and inventive guy, I think you could do it if you put your mind to it with the same motor, linkage and some limiters. Pay no mind to the nay sayers, I am always impressed with your k.i.s.s method of solving problems or upgrading.
@cgrobe21

I love that. Very intuitive. Do you think a counter weight on opposite side like a fixed pendulum would take that slight pause and bump out of it. It would keep a steady pressure on it but like you said its working fine and not causing a problem so its fine like it is. Great idea though.

I took a closer look at my boyar schultz 612 today for you. 1st understand this machine has a rack under the table. So, my handle is spring loaded to the engaged position. I can pull it out to allow me to clock the handle for a comfortable position. Now, if I machine a spacer to keep it disengaged from the rack, my table freely slides side to side and the handle can't spin and try turn me into a woman!
