Mrs. Trumble SAVED "I Love Lucy!" Here Is How It Happened!
Many people forget how instrumental Mrs. Trumble was the success of I Love Lucy. She was the one who took care of the baby when the Ricardoes and the Mertzes were doing their own shenanigans. The baby could NOT tag along ALL the time. So, in this times, she took over. Let me explain the entire story in my newest video! Enjoy!

Rick, Great video, and great tribute to Elizabeth Patterson, who will always be remembered as the reliable Mrs. Trumble. I guess we have to assume she was a widow, because she was older, with no husband, and the creators used the title "Mrs." She was the plot-saver. When no one else was around, there was always a mention that "Mrs. Trumble would watch the baby." And what a clever way to introduce her: from disgruntled neighbor to loyal babysitter. Rapidly approaching 100K Subs, Rick! I'm watching closely. Fans: Consider becoming a Patreon member. Best regards, Paul

My favorite Mrs Trumble moment is when the gang is getting ready to sail for Europe. Lucy askes Mrs T if she can bring her anything from Paris. Mrs T whispers in Lucy's ear. Lucy then yells out, "My Sin !?" The coy little giggle of Mrs T, perfection!

It was perfect as they laid the groundwork for her character at the end if the episode when she was upset about children residing in the building when she was calming the baby upon their return from the Mertz apt when they realized they had forgotten about him and ran off without thinking about him being left alone, and she said ”that as long as she lived there he would never be left alone.” Perfectly normal during that era of time, neighbors calling upon neighbors to cover for childcare at no charge, it's what you did for one another.

Elizabeth Patterson was indeed a perfect choice for covering that dilemma, especially loved Vivian Vance's slight blooper in the episode "No Children Allowed " when she refers to Dorothy (Rosie O' Donnell's mother? ...lol !) at card game set up her reference to Mrs " Turnbull " when telling her story....AGAIN !! LOL !! I always get a bit teary eyed as Mrs Trimble softly tells little Ricky that he will always have her to be around so that he will no longer ever be left alone. Yes, Elizabeth --great addition.

I loved the episode where Mrs. Trumbull hears about a talent scout coming, and she gets all dressed as a Spanish señiorita, all in black lace and with a traditional comb at the back of her head with a lace mantilla! In watching I Love Lucy, whenever Lucy had a crazy idea mrs. Trumble was always handy. Even though she may not have been in that particular episode mrs. Trumble was always ready to babysit no matter what day or what time. And doing it for free! What a great babysitter. Everyone needs a mrs. Trumble in their lives and there's a neighbor. Thanks for a great inside on the babysitting dilemma. I think a lot of TV shows fast forward the kids aged because it can really create a lot more activity in the show. You can't do much as a baby they can't talk yet only cry so they make the kid get older overnight. Lucy is a classic show it always brings a smile to your face no matter how many thousands of times you've seen it.

Mrs. Trumble also became the apartment manager after Fred and Ethel moved to Connecticut. Changing the subject, Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance would mention their real life friends on the show. One of Vivian Vance's real life friend was Jane Sebastian, the mother of John Sebastian who was a founder of The Lovin' Spoonful and writer of the Welcome Back Kotter theme song. Jane Sebastian is mentioned at least one time, but I think she's mentioned a couple more times.

I actually missed Mrs. Trumble when everyone moved to Connecticut. When the Mertz’s moved to the country with the Ricardos, I think the last we ever heard of Mrs. Trumble was that her sister wanted to move in and manage the building. The same thing happened with Lucy’s mother. She disappeared with the move to Connecticut as well. They were great characters, you’d think that Lucy’s mother would be in a few more episodes, but I guess they didn’t need her.

A woman born in antique times: 1874 -- perhaps she is the earliest-born actor to appear in the show? Star Trek (OS) had an actor or two born in the early 1880s, but no one from the 1870s. Hard to believe that there was a time when many people alive today might see an old guy and it would turn out they were Civil War veterans; nowadays no ww1 veterans although there are a few people born during ww1 around. Even ww2 vets are becoming increasingly rare with the youngest well over 90.

I've always said that if little Ricky was real in life, he would've grown up with some serious abandonment issues. He had little screen time as a baby, he was on camera for few seconds and then he was off to bed, off to a walk, being watched by Mrs. Trumbull, etc.
@StevePemberton2

As mentioned by Rick at 4:05 the age difference in season six was pretty interesting. Technically Little Ricky was always played by older "actors", but only in the sixth season was the actor significantly older than the character that he played. In season 2 the character of Little Ricky was "born" on January 19, 1953 when the episode "Lucy Goes to the Hospital" was aired. Desi Arnaz Jr. was born the same day. The real life infant who appeared very briefly at the end of the episode was James John Ganzer who was just two weeks old when the episode was filmed, and nearly three months old by the time the episode aired and Little Ricky and Desi Jr. were born. Later in the second season the Simmons twins played Little Ricky in a few episodes, beginning with "No Children Allowed". They were four and a half months older than Little Ricky and Desi Jr., they were six months old when they filmed their first episode. Little Ricky and Desi Jr. were only two months old when that episode was filmed. At the end of the second season the Simmons twins were replaced by the Mayer twins, who were seven months older than Little Ricky and Desi Jr., and ten and a half months old when they filmed their first episode, "Ricky's 'Life' Story". However for some reason their debut episode didn't air until the beginning of the third season. The Mayer twins continued to play Little Ricky for the third, fourth, and fifth seasons, and they were three and a half years old when they filmed their last episode, "Lucy Gets Homesick in Italy". In season six there was quite the fast-forward mentioned by Rick when Keith Thibodeaux (stage name Richard Keith) began playing Little Ricky. Keith was two years, one and a half months older than Little Ricky and Desi Jr. Keith filmed his first episode "Lucy and Bob Hope" when he was five and a half years old. When the final Lucy/Desi episode "Lucy Meets the Mustache" was filmed in March 1960 (in which Keith performed a drum solo) he was nine years old. By that time Little Ricky and Desi Jr. were seven years old.

The only time Mrs. Trumble didn't babysit was the episode where Lucy as usual gets into the show as as Indian with the ingenious idea of having little Ricky straddled on her back as a surprise when she turns around after big Ricky asks who's taking care of little Ricky.

Yeah, they've all been gone a long time now. The show was already into reruns when I was a little kid watching in the early 60s. ✌

Great video Rick! I think they handled it perfectly! And there were some episodes that focused on little Ricky as well. We’re you called Little Ricky when you were little?😂🤣

I loved Mrs Trumbull. I never really paid that much attention to Little Ricky's camera 📷 time ⏲, but I will say that, that happens a lot when TV 📺 families acquire a dog 🐕 in an episode but then you never thereafter see 👀 that dog again.

has anyone noticed that the baby’s crib is decorated with cartoon stick versions of Ricky & Lucy? I believe the design is from the original intro. a heart surrounds the cartoon pair
