In this episode, we go through the ins and outs of induction cooking on a 12v battery with a 240v ac inverter. How big does your battery capacity need to be, how many watts does your inverter need, and the all-important question... How many amps does it draw?
If you are chasing the exact setup we used it was all on the ITECHWORLD ITECH1300P portable power station perfect for off-grid setups.

Every cooktop is different. Our one actually states the amps on the LCD instead some that just have numbers 1-10.. If your cooktop is a 2000w cooktop I would guess 10 uses the full 2000w and 5 would use around 1000w. This is where a battery monitor comes in handy so you know exactly what the inverter is drawing out of the battery.

Can you run and invertor and induction of AGM batteries? I heard the current can fry AGM's? Was figuring a 200 watt invertor and keeping appliances like induction at less then 1000? thought
@TrueNorthAdventures
@TrueNorthAdventures 6 ай бұрын
No you won’t be able to run it off an AGM (not a standard 100-200ah 12v agm anyway) To run 1000 you will need at least a 1000 watt inverter. At a minimum for induction I would suggest a set up of 200ah lithium. 2000w inverter. You can get away with some 100ah lithiums depending on recommended max discharge.

@TrueNorthAdventures
@TrueNorthAdventures Жыл бұрын
Probably about 10-15 minutes. We used to do it with a 100ah lithium. Along as you can put the power back in eg solar or driving then you will be fine. Also check your batteries max current/amp draw and check it can handle it.

1x9kg gas bottle $55 1x refill $25. 1x itechworld 100ah powerstation $2500 So I can buy and refill my bottle like 97 times for the same price. Or 50 and have enough money left to get an AGM + battery box to run lights and fridge. 🤔
@TrueNorthAdventures
@TrueNorthAdventures Жыл бұрын
Spot on mate! Although most people are moving to lithium now anyway so it's probably just more the cost of an inverter that is the extra cost to setup for most. Also has the advantages of being lighter in comparison to an AGM battery and extra gas bottle setup and cooks perfectly in windy situations. It's not going to suit everyone but definitely has its applications.

wow 30 mps in 10-15 minutes? Thats seems like insanely bad conversion or power loss. If my maths are correct, 1000 watts/ 12 volts= 83 amp hours. Your cooking at 120 amp hours meaning there is a 50% energy loss in the conversion. Thats pretty significant. Thanks for the real world numbers.
@TrueNorthAdventures

@joesmith1142 Screen shows at least 1080w at one point in the video and the battery is probably 12.8 or higher. There's a loss of probably 10-20% from the inverter, so your math is probably not too precise.

if i can 3 meals in that day thats 90Amps and a fridge that takes 24A and lights take about 7A and then charging 2 phones is around 8A im looking at just under 130Amps per day. on a good day my solar pulls in about 60Amps a day. 130A out and only 60A in. for me it dosnt sound sustainable but would be great to see some of the people taking this rout break down there setup like this as well so we can see why people are taking this option and who it works for.
@TrueNorthAdventures
@TrueNorthAdventures 25 күн бұрын
Hi yes I agree, so we have a fixed solar panel on the car which probably only does 50amps on a good day. But the car produces 40amps per hour. As we are often driving for at least an hour a day it is just something that we need to keep an eye on and cook the odd thing on the fire to save abit of power or don’t do a cook up for breakfast. It is definitely a fast way too cook though.

The irony of using an inverter is that there is a fair chance that the induction cooker itself is converting the AC to DC anyway (obviously the controls are all DC). If that's the case then there is fair bit of energy being lost in the double conversions that could theoretically be avoided. And indeed you can find videos of people who have built their own DC induction cookers (a lot of them seem to be Indians running them on solar-based systems).
@TrueNorthAdventures

Very interesting mate. Surely a 12v induction cooktop would do pretty well if someone released it.
@davidclark2286
@davidclark2286 8 ай бұрын
@@TrueNorthAdventures but surely it will need to convert the DC to AC to run the device. Surely you need an AC current to produce the alternating magnetic field to give the inductance to generate heat in the magnetic pan ( or the magnetic core in the base of a non-magnetic pan. @TrueNorthAdventures 27 күн бұрын
We didn't see it that way, but we can see where you are coming from. Even if the induction cooker was made to run off 12v directly, it would still require an internally concealed inverter to change the current to AC to work, so it's not really that different and allows the option to use the inverter for other appliances.
