In anticipation of Doom Eternal we take a look at the first Doom movie from 2005 (yes there's two) starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Karl Urban and Rosamund Pike. It really held the bar in terms of video game adaptations and by that I mean because it's not very good. Thanks for listening!

@EpicJasonX9000 well. I'm a Doom fan and I personally believe both movies are god awful. Are you gonna slap me for thinking the 05 shit fest is bad? Cause guess what, a lot of people, Doom fans included, do not like the 05 movie. Since you covered Annihilation let's talk about how shitty the 05 movie is; It's got mediocre acting from everyone involved worst of all Rosamund Pike who's acting gets worse as the movie goes on. The marine team is composed of a rookie who does drugs, a religious nutcase and a rapist.... grade A material right there. The Rock literally does a heel turn in a matter of seconds with no rhyme or reason. The whole movie is characters running in the dark with rock music blaring and no action happening. Theres no hell or demons, instead it's a dumb ass metaphor for the state of their situation making the movie come off as retarded. The FPS scene is one of the fucking dumbest things ever simply because the movie barely resembles the games and suddenly out of nowhere it wants to be like the games but it's too little too late. The BFG is used twice in the movie and it misses both shots. It kills absolutely no one in the entire movie. The Rock and Karl Urban have a hand to hand fistfight at the end of the film in MOVIE CALLED DOOM. That is blasphemy right there. And did I mention this movie barely resembles the games. I know some people say it resembles Doom 3, but even I know that's bullshit as I have played Doom 3 multiple times and the movie is nothing like the game. Both movies are awful. Equally in my opinion, so as a true Doom fan, you know what I do? Play the games. As any self respecting fan should.

Granted, I haven't seen the movie since I was probably 17, but I remember enjoying it. Also, you're comparing movie Pinky to Doom 1 Pinky and it does look silly comparatively. But as you said, Doom movie was based on Doom 3, and in Doom 3 Pinky had a cybernetic lower body and looked a lot like a monstrous pitbull. So the movie did change his feet to wheels, but they didn't just make it up.

Yeah, it's not perfect (the plot device of the Nexus* doesn't really stand up to scrutiny), but it has good moments, and mostly looks pretty good. I assume they are this movie to tie into the Picard series. I think the Nexus would have worked better if they had used Spock rather than Guinan. Ambassador Spock is on the refugee ship in the beginning, so goes into the Nexus. Later, older Spock explains to Picard what happened, then when Picard goes into the Nexus younger Spock mind-melds him to figure out what's going on. Then Spock explains how they can get back to the real world, and explains why Picard can't go any further back in time. This would solve all the major plot holes, plus it would mean we had Spock in the movie as well as Kirk!

This movie’s genetic serum angle is basically the same premise as the t-virus from resident evil; turns most people into zombies/nemeses or whatever, but turns the protagonist into a super hero because they happen to have compatible DNA. I happen to think the 2005 Doom movie is underrated. I mean I get why people who were expecting something more like the Doom video game were disappointed, (including the lack of demons from Hell) but it had entertaining action sequences and character interactions, and I particularly liked the setup for the "first person" sequence, since Karl Urban's character doesn't know where his sister went, or even fully what's going on, so there's a sense of tension through the scene that goes beyond just being attacked by hordes of zombies and other monsters. I think that if you take a step back from it and adjust your expectations, you may find it enjoyable on a rewatch... which I realize is basically like saying "the Doom movie is enjoyable if you don't expect it to be Doom," but nevertheless, that's how I feel about it.

I respected this movie for what it did that others often didn't. A blockbuster about hell, that also respected exposition through the use of science and research. Especially every scene with Dr Carmack, the animalistic and purely terrified state that the Ark Facility had left him in was so chilling to me because it provoked a sense of 'cosmic horror' and 'fear of the unknown and the insane'. "A guy like Carmack - who's trained to put logic before emotion; gets so freaked huh, that he tears off his own ear? I'm telling you man, it's shit like that that gets under ya skin" - Portman And a film that turned the typical Macho and sagacious protagonist (The Rock) into the surprise Antagonist both progressively (through the "we have our orders and idc if they're morally questionable arc) and suddenly (through his physical transformation). 7/10 - Bold movie

@@sebastiancintron29 Doom: Annihilation wasn't exactly exciting. It definitely wasn't more exciting than Doom 2005. As cheesy as the effect was, the FPS scene in Doom '05 was more exciting than any scene in Annihilation. The acting wasn't great, but the mediocre acting in '05 is still better than the terrible acting in Annihilation. Plus the Rock and Urban are still fun to watch even at close to their worst. Largely due to them, '05 still comes off as an attempt by a studio to make a good film. Annihilation just feels like a low budget knockoff of the Resident Evil films. It's a matter of personal opinion I guess, but I don't see how anyone who watches the two in the same week could put Doom:Annihilation over the '05 Doom.

@@jared3868 I personally believe both movies are equally bad. 05 is boring and unexciting and FPS scene is retarded. Annihilation is low budget crap. I honestly rather play the games than watch both movies that honestly give the Doom name a bad rap.

An FYI: The reason that minigun shoots outta frame is because it's actually a single Browning .30 cal machine gun with a rotating barrel shroud built around it. Ergo, the muzzle flash comes from the center of the shroud, not the top. The choice of framing is likely to obfuscate that.

Basically, the Doom movie was your standard Resident Evil style zombievirus movie. Kinda like Ultraviolet, it was labs, scientists, and monsters. It seemed like a big trend at the time. The actual Doom story might have been something different & unique, though. It might have resembled Event Horizon. That said, I didn't mind it. The first person sequence wasn't a bad consolation prize, for not resembling Doom that much. Also, the BFG didn't really affect walls. It vaporized monsters & bounced. It was something you had to respect, or it could be bad for you. Knowing what it was, I was able to accept it as entertainment. It was a passable action movie, but maybe it could have been much more, if they had tried to adapt the idea more, rather than trying to create something new, (or adapt an existing back burner story) out of thin air.
