How do we know how to read when we shift to 2,3,4 position on the music ( pls I need to know now!)

there will be a number over the note/notes

You just have to figure it out sometimes. Whatever is easiest. Try things, I tend to stick to first position, but sometimes I have to shift or sometimes it avoids string crossings
