This is Video No. 2 in this online course focused on learning how to use MS Project. This video discusses and demonstrates the process used to create a Work Breakdown Structure. I also review the fundamentals discussed in the previous Video No.1.
Here is a google drive link to the MS Project start point file used in the video if you wish to download and follow along (you must have MS Project for it to work):

Video 1 • MS PROJECT THE COURSE,...
I’m Tom Stephenson a professor of Construction management and I’ve taught MS Project to both students and professional for many years. In this course I plan to build on a sample project that we can create together. Every video will add more tools to your repertoire so that you will be able to create baseline schedules, update and recover them. You will also be able to add and track changes, cost, and productivity rates so that you can be a successful project manager.
I plan to add one video per week and you can follow along by subscribing and clicking the notification icon. I will provide google drive links in the description for start point files as we progress in the course. If there is a specific topic you are after take a look at my other MS Project playlists on my channel.
Tom Stephenson is a national award-winning professor (George Brown College, University of Toronto) and best-selling author whose background in education spans nearly three decades. Thank you very much professor Tom. I am a civil engineer and I am just starting to learn about Microsoft Project for myself to have a skill that I can use with my own future construction projects, as well as to have a skill that might get me to shine among my peers for knowing such a software at work. Your videos are making the process of learning MSP easy and absorbable. Thank you so much for sharing such videos, and keep up the good work. May Allah bless you. Yours sincerely from your student from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia!

I’m Egyptian and working in the USA, and I’m using Microsoft project, but the way you teach and explain is terrific. If you give classes for Microsoft project, It will be an honor to join. Please let me know. I have a question: usually have a baseline breakdown, for example, 3 stores medical center. I will have a summary task for site work, 1st floor, 2nd floor, and exterior finishes. That right? Or do I need to put all activities under one baseline (construction ) as you have them in this video?

We use MS Project for helping rollup the costs of a project for proposal purposes. So, adding in normal task etc with the resources and the hourly rates in the backend. So I typically add in the task, then the resources and everything is ok - the cost column rolls up the costs as it would do normally, but when I them go to add in the dates for the work to start, all hell breaks loose when the costs now change - as would expect project to do, but I don't want that to happen, the costs are fixed - all I want to do is highlight when the work will start, not actually say that the task taking 2 days longer etc. Is there a way to fix this ?

@TomStephensontraining Жыл бұрын
Hi Iain, are you adding resources as work or as a cost? Work is variable and will change when duration changes where as cost will only change when you physically change the cost. You change from work to cost inthe resource sheet. Hope that helps

@@TomStephensontraining Hi Tom, they are added in as Work. When I change to Cost, the Std Rate disappears. When I go back to the Task Usage, the hours and cost have been removed and it does not let me enter them

Check out my playlists on MS project and go to the ones called resources. You ad the costs individually to the activities where you plan to payrhem out. A lot to explain need to reciew resource videos.
