I really enjoyed this video! I love the sentimental value of the tortoise shell pen. I think that is such a wonderful way to remember your late grandma!

I love the look of the Superior Labor pouches,...but I am so worried about the pens being too close together and things getting scratched. I wish they would make one with individual slots. Love the Galen! Your pen collection is lovely :)

There is the softer one that does have dividers, it only fits 3 and doesn’t open flat though and I like that this one opens flat. I just think carefully about what goes next to what, I don’t put brass next to my Pelikan if I can avoid it for example (though I know it is in this video, ordinarily I have a mildliner in there too and it buffers between them)

I use a lot of sailor and pilot. The pilot 823 not being buttery smooth is very surprising! I have found mine to be great whatever ink I throw at it. It was a noticeable upgrade from the VP for example so may need to be looked at if you don’t have that same experience On sailor fine- While I enjoy the pencil feedback, i have also noticed that my enjoyment varies depending on the ink I use. Sometimes can trigger a nails on chalkboard reaction from me. I would not recommend sailor ink though. They are so variable and depending on the type, run very dry! If you don’t like the sailor pen with pilot iroshizuku ink, then that nib size may just be a fail for you. The MF+ sizes I find really fun with sailor

Love your collection. With my sailor nebula, I found the jacques herbin emerald of chivor does so well. I was using a drier ink earlier and didn’t love it. But the emerald of chivor seemed awesome. Even with the glitter and sheen. I have the m/f so not sure if it would be ok with f though.

I find shimmer inks do struggle with a finer nib, I’ve tried wetter inks in this one and it’s just too fine. I have bought a loupe so I can have a look at the tines as I’m wondering if they’re just a smidge too close together and a little wiggle might correct them

@@GeorginaTheLibrarian that is true. This was the first time I’d tried it in my sailor and was pleasantly surprised. I agree that the fine would be different as mines a m and it writes pretty fine though

26:23 Hi. you were talking about a dry flow with the pilot custom 823. Maybe I am late but just want to advise If you unscrew the back to let air in while you write for a long session, it has a good flow even with drier inks. It took me a while to figure that out so i hope this helps. Thank you for the lovely video and sharing your beautiful collection.
@GeorginaTheLibrarian

Yes it’s a vacuum pen, I’m aware the back has to be unscrewed, I just find it isn’t as smooth if you use inks that aren’t pilot brand

Definitely send that Sailor to be tuned and smoothed - you may even ask them to grind it down just a tad to be more of a MF and even smoother. It's better than not using it or being sad about it - especially since it's such a happy colorful sparkly pen! :)

It’s by superior labor, where it is available will depend on your location but a google search for superior labor pen case should help. They are all made by hand so they come in and out of stock periodically, so you may just have to wait for a preorder or restock at a store in your country. Precious is definitely the right word ❤️

Great video! I had an identical issue with my Parker when lived in the UK, that also rolled off the desk and landed on its nib at school, but my mate just gave me his spare nib. Ive also got a Kaweco brass but still without patina, was your patina natural or have you tried aging it? Your Sailor Pro Gear has the same colour scheme to the Conklin Duragraph PVD blue, although thats in steel. Marvellous hobby, how many pens do you leave inked up at a time?
@GeorginaTheLibrarian
@GeorginaTheLibrarian Жыл бұрын
I love that your friend had a spare nib! I was quite unusual in using a fountain pen for my exams, everyone else loved a biro. The patina is entirely natural on the brass, I have started it off fresh once before but that was because I thought I could get it to a polished brass not realising it isn’t machined to a polished finish. I’ve considered machine polishing it (my partner is a car enthusiast so it would be quite an easy job) and then letting it patina from there so I might start it off fresh again soon.

I missed your question about how many inked sorry! I tend to have 3 “writers” inked at a time, so they’re the ones in my pen case that I rotate through the week, though one pen I’ve added to my collection since this is a platinum century and that I keep inked in addition as the cap means it never dries out, then I keep my 74 inked for drawing at all times too (though some people would cry about that because of the ink but it’s never had any issues)

Is it worth buying sailor pmma resin fountains in comparison to ebonite?which one is less brittle and long lasting?
@GeorginaTheLibrarian
@GeorginaTheLibrarian Жыл бұрын
I’m not an expert but I believe ebonite is technically more fragile. Even though it has elasticity I think that’s when in rubber form, once heated to being a hard material used for a barrel I think it is quite fragile. It has more chemical resistance though, that’s why it is used for feeds, and i know like cellulose it reacts to the heat of your hand so it’s supposed to be more comfortable for writing. However I have heard of the resin sailors cracking too, it’s why when I use a standard pen case I never have the sailor just rolling around in it and not in a protective sleeve. I also never post it because a lot of the hairline cracks start to appear around the threads on the cap and I’m sure it’s from both over tightening and posting the cap. In my opinion sailor pens on the whole are too fragile to be practical, for me they are more of a when I want to use a beautiful pen than a workhorse kind of brand, which is fine but I wouldn’t want to spend the amount that a PG or king is for a pen that I’d be too scared of breaking. That’s just my opinion though as someone who is clumsy!

I have the Sailor Pro Gear Slim in Blue Nebula as well! But I got the MF nib and I have the same problem where it is incredibly fine (it writes like some of my pilot EF nibs) and feels kind of scratchy. Ink flow isn't a problem because it doesn't skip or anything either, it just feels like it is super fine. Not sure if its just QC problem with the nib itself as I have friends who have a Sailor PGS in MF nib and theirs writes just fine. (A true, in between F and M kind of line) But like you as well, I was... quite dissappointed. :( It is such a pretty pen!

@TheUndecidedFrog
@TheUndecidedFrog Жыл бұрын
Those Jinhao pens are x450s, and they have 18KGP nibs. They are not solid gold nibs like your pelikan and pilots and sailors. They are gold-plated steel nibs, hence the "18KGP". On a separate subject, if you enjoy the SF nib on the pilot, I encourage you to try the Pilot FA (falcon) nib, for subtle line variation. I consider the FA nib a semi-flex nib, not as flexible as the vintage nibs, but certainly flexible for a modern nib.
@GeorginaTheLibrarian
@GeorginaTheLibrarian Жыл бұрын
I looked at the falcon when I got the 74, I can’t remember why I chose the 74 at the time, I think it was cheaper and it was my first time buying a more expensive pen for my art so I was wary of spending too much (I use platinum carbon ink so I’m always wary of clogging it)

When I bought them the listing said gold, not plated, but I am not an expert on Jinhao and for a few quid I’m not going to look too much into it, I just bought them to try because someone suggested them. They’re not really to my taste.

@GeorginaTheLibrarian Жыл бұрын
@@TheUndecidedFrog the 912 with the falcon nib is still £200+ to the UK, I paid about £90 for the 74. I looked at all of the options on Pen Sachi when I ordered and made my decision, and the 74 is sufficient for what I need.
