Pinning this comment because I get it a lot lol: yes, I naturally hold my pens that way. My pens do write smoothly and the ink flows consistently with the way I hold it (besides my one kaweco but that’s because of other reasons). I have written holding pens the ‘proper’ way (at a more 45 degree angle, leaned back and gripped with my finger tips instead of my fist) but that’s not comfortable for me when it comes to long term writing, and it also makes my lines thicker - and I prefer the finer line I get from my natural grip! I know on camera it appears that the nib is sideways due to my grip, but both tines DO come in contact with the paper, the pen is just held at a higher angle rather than leaned back. I have had zero issues with smoothness, ink flow, etc. with the way I naturally hold a pen!

You appear to have a lateral tripod grip (you can google it to verify). I have a lateral quadrupod grip and I can use fountain pens just fine as well.

@@xyzzy75 love this comment lol!! I’m glad to see someone else say that because I feel like no one believes that my pens write just fine the way I hold it 🤣 I swear they do! I feel like if the line of ink is saturated, inky, smooth, consistent and not skipping (like it would if you held the nib completely upside down for example) then it’s writing as intended, ya know? I am def going to look into grips now because that’s super interesting

It's still best to learn how to hold a pen properly. You can save yourself a LOT of pain in your hands and wrist in the long run. You'll also prevent a LOT of Longterm damage to your nibs, as well. If you print, rather than writing in cursive, you also increase the risk of serious pain down the road. A hint? Stop buying extra fine nibs. Regardless of the brand, the chances of getting a bad nib quadruple, at the very least, when you buy extra fine. Simply put, the smaller the tipping material, the more difficult it is to make it smooth. In this case, the problem is not with the fine nib. Nibs don't stop writing well unless the nib and feed are out of line, or the nib isn't seated properly, or if the a tine is bent slightly, or if both tines get bent. But when a nib writes very well, it will ALWAYS write very well until and unless the user somehow damages it, or gets the nib and/or the feed on the pen wrong, or both. It just isn't possible for a nib to stop writing well without a reason. And you may find this hard to believe, but it is possible to talk without using the kind of language you seem to like. I assume it's just the usual way you and your friends talk, but not everyone does and it's a sure way to lose viewers. Sadly, not nearly enough viewers because the majority probably talk the same way, Heaven help their children, but still quite a few.

@@jamesaritchie1 You seem to have a lot of problems and quite the know it all attitude / air of superiority, which I’ve noticed is VERY common within the fountain pen community. Why is that? It’s a turn off to newbies interested in the hobby, but I’d imagine it’s because fountain pens themselves are a vintage item, and sometimes older people believe they are better than younger people (not trying to be ageist but you get it, everyone curses millennials). I’m not sure what you mean by ‘language’, but I do not post videos for viewers. This is my hobby. I post videos because it’s fun for me to chat about stationery. No issues here if I’m not someone’s cup of tea! My guess is you’d prefer someone who speaks in a formal, infomercial type way but believe it or not, a lot of my viewers enjoy my casual, chatty nature and bubbly demeanor - as if they’re having coffee with a friend. Lastly, I do not need to ‘learn’ how to write properly, I know how and have done it many times. But, I prefer the way I hold a pen for many reasons and as long as that inks flowin and the pen is writing… I’m good! I’ll check back with ya in 30 years but I’ll probably have carpal tunnel anyways from my desk job. Thanks for the comments!

*I realize this is a slightly older video but this bugs me*@@jamesaritchie1 You had a few good points until you made it personal. Why would you do that? If you want to make a point, you can't be disrespectful, period. No one's going to listen to legitimate concerns if you talk out your a$$. She's literally talking like a person. There are around 30 major dialects of the English language in the United States alone. And most people actually *DO* like hearing a person talk the usual way they would talk to their friends. KZfaq is a social platform, and most of us want to feel like we're having a comfy conversation over coffee, sitting in their living room hanging out and vibing. If you don't like that, don't watch - not everything is going to be *for* every body. You had to get so far into the video to even address those concerns, why didn't you just stop watching once you realized it wasn't for you?

Welcome to the rabbit hole. Here is your welcome basket of carrots and lettuce. If I can give you 1 piece of advice. Slow down and really figure out what you like in a fountain pen. Define a set of parameters, and then purchase pens accordingly, until your tastes change. One thing I have noticed from newbies, their journey begins with a flurry, and by the time they figure out exactly what they like, they have bought a lot of pens, and the guilt starts to set in about future purchases. The guilt never works, but then you're left with a lot of pens, just when you really start to figure out what you like and want to experience. A lot of people start out with "starter" pens that are smaller and with EF, and F nibs, and eventually learn they like bigger, girthier, pens with broader nibs, but again a whole lot of pens have been bought by that time. So take your time. I have fallen prey to it sometimes as well. Good Luck. :)

@@fizixguru101 I think I should start a video channel to impart some tips. There are so many more. I used to feel that way too, but now I am ready to unload some pens. I thought I would never sell any because it documents my pen journey, but if I'm not using them because they don't suit my needs then why keep 'em? And the pens is just a tip of the iceberg, because there are inks, then paper, then storage, and finally I want to start getting my favorite pens customized. I mean it adds up not just in money, but space. That's why I think it is so important to really figure out what pen really fits with you. when you come from a ballpoint, one doesn't really know how a thicker, girthier, heavier pen with a stub nib feels or writes, but by the time some figure that out, they've accumulated so many pens. And if a person wants to buy a MB 149 as their first pen, I say do it, so long as they are all in on fountain pens, and know what you want in a pen.

TWSBI is a Tawanese brand. I've been in the hobby for about 10 years now, and my advice with your troublesome Kaweco would be to take the whole thing apart, wash it completely, and let all the parts air-dry. Make sure that the feed is very clean. When you re-assemble it, be sure that your hands are just washed clean and dry, without any hand cream since the oils can interfere with water based fountain pen ink. Hopefully that will solve your skipping problems!

TWSBI pens are just solid, and I always recommend starting out with an Eco. I like the idea of a vanishing point, but couldn't get over the price tag - I've found the knock-off version the Majohn A1 to be great, and worth checking out at about $40 or so. Another I've really enjoyed is the Wing Sung 699 vacuum filler that is a knock-off of the Pilot Custom 823, but about $30 instead of $300. Thanks for showing off your collection, some very nice pens!

My daily driver is also the Pilot Vanishing Point in extra fine! I also found that fountain pens with gold nibs, like the Lamy 2000 in extra fine, provide such a soothing writing experience; it's around the same price range as the Vanishing Point but so worth it! I think the next pen I want to get is the Lamy Dialog CC but that's at a price point a little too high at the moment.
@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 Жыл бұрын
I think the 2000 has the worst nib on any gold nib pen. It's hard as a nail, and has a miniscule sweet spot. Non0fountain pen users who don't know anything about fountain pens prefer the Jinhao x750 nib over the 2000. I don't blame them. Why anyone would want a still gold nib is puzzling. I know very few people really know much about nibs, but the whole point of a gold nib should be to get away from stiffness. Assuming you know how to use one, a soft gold nib is so much better than any other nib that it can't be described. It's the only type of nib that allows for hours and hours of writing without hand fatigue or cramping. Again, if you learn how to use it properly. The tipping is exactly the same on gold nibs and steel nibs, so there is no difference in the writing experience between a steel nib, and a stiff gold nib. I'm not a Vanishing Point fan because if I want a pen that clicks I'll get a gel pen, but the nib on the VP is infinitely better than the nib on the 2000, though still not great. The Pilot Falcon with the flex nib is far, far better. It is NOT a true flex nib, it's a semi-flex nib. Really a soft nib that's strong enough to intentionally flex a little.

Just found your video (via KZfaq recommendation). I'm a fountain pen lover too. Just a suggestion for your Kaweco Macchiato...have you tried a different ink? I think Ferris Wheel Press inks can be a problem to use. I think they're very thin/watery. Maybe your nib will play better with a wetter, more lubricated ink. I'd suggest trying a Pilot Iroshizuku ink. They are wonderful and flow smoothly in every pen I've had them in. You can always order a few sample inks so as not to commit to a full bottle unless you find out it works. Good luck with that pen.
@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 Жыл бұрын
Iroshizuku inks are not lubricated or very wet. If you want lubricated inks, Noodler's has more than anyone. Any eel ink is lubricated, but so are some of the others. It's often easier to lubricate you own inks with White Lightning, which is made for the job. But this isn't the problem with the Kaweco. Either the nib has been dmaged in some way, or the feed and/or nib aren't seated properly, or the pen is dirty, perhaps with dried ink.

My favorite pens are Platinum Nice, Montegrappa Parola and Elmo, Gravitas Entry, and Montblanc. I bought a MF Sailor ProGear, but it isn't wet enough and it's too fine. It's a very pretty pen, though, and I plan to try that pen in the M. Platinum is my favorite for work - it's not too wet (so it doesn't bleed through cheap office paper) or too fine, and the sealed cap means the ink never dries out. I rotate through pens. When I no longer use one, I sell it. I buy pretty pens so I have no problem selling my pens.

I'm relieved that I'm not the only one who had issues with the Lamy safari. My first fountain pen were disposable Pilot varsity pens and those wrote better than my first "real" fountain pen which was a Lamy al star. I went through three extra fine nibs on that pen and eventually gave up on it. Very inconsistent, would tear up paper so easily, was not smooth either. Now, my current pens include a Platinum Century Celluloid 3776 which I use the most and two Nahvlur Voyager pens that I'm struggling to find decent nibs for. Yesterday I had ordered the every rose has its thorn after eyeing it for quite a whilst so I'm looking forward to that as well!

I read somewhere that you need to place it somewhere Nebe side down for the ink to flow and fill up the name or the little thing behind it. That didn’t work, but to migrate to light on the second day always well. I wonder if anyone else has had this experience or can give some advice about speeding up the process. Try to get a pen case that has a flap over the pen lids, that way there no possibility of the clips scratching on the opposite side. You are correct. The tWSBI uses a piston filler. They are not internal converters. Also if you like smooth nibs, try a Faber-Castell. They have the best steel nibs out there, but because they are German they might run a bit broader than you like. You will get the best ink characteristics with mediums nibs and broader. It's nice to experiment, but if you do not like thick lines, stay with the Japanese pens. Platinum has and UUEF out there. Not easy to find here, but I would suggest checking out online stores in Japan.
@jamesaritchie1

I woul suggest making sure you know a good nib expert before buying any expensive extra fine nib, and certainly anything finer than that. I've seen many of these Platinum nibs, and every last one was very, very scratchy. Extra think lines are a very poor choice for writing with fountain pens. Nibs like that are much better for art, not writing. If you want ultra thin lines for writing, fineline pens of some type are an infinitely better choice.

It's TWSBI. Send it back to the company, and they will fix or replace it, unless you bent the tines. It may be rough, or it may be scratchy. There's a difference. Rough means it needs smoothed, which takes a few seconds with micromesh. Scratchy means one of the tines is bent so it doesn't quite line up with the other ne. This, too, is an easy fixe, if you have a loop. A bad TWSBI nib is very, very unusual, but as with any brand and any model of fountain pen, you're far better off buying a fine or medium or broad or stub nib. Extra fine nibs are rough far more often. But TWSBI is a good company, and stands by iuts pens.

Make sure the nib is seated all the way in and lined up with the feed. And check to see that the tines are aligned. Maybe check out some videos on KZfaq about tuning nibs. @@amandaleighplans If it picked up a tiny piece of paper, to me that sounds like the tines are misaligned and one is lower than the other and is pulling up paper. Look straight at the tip of the nib and make sure both tines are lined up, if one is lower gently push the other one down to match. Or push the side up to match. The tines also could be too tight, you can press the nib down on paper to open them up a little bit too. Push firmly but not too hard, try it a few times. She’ll is pretty resilient but you don’t want to over do it. Taking it to a fountain pen store or someone who has some experience would be a good idea. @@amandaleighplans That does sound like the tines are too close together then, so glad that worked out for you. The trouble with super fine writing is that it defeats the whole purpose of a fountain pen. Fountain pens are supposed to display ink properties and qualities. It's about far more than just the color of the ink. It's the sheen, the shading, the shimmer, and even the mixing. It takes a wider line of ink to do this. Of you write too fine, you'd be far better off using a fineline pen. You'll get a lot of colors, a more reliable pen, and better control.

The LAMY is German. It’s designed like that because it’s also used in German schools to teach and encourage students on how to hold a fountain pen the correct way. Not to the side like you do, not upside-down but the tip facing top of the page, or at least roughly in that area, and the sides of the top point to the sides of the page. Not necessarily perfectly but that’s the idea. That way you can change the signature of the writing by releasing more or less ink consistently depending on how hard you push down.

If you look up images of Oyster Hour you can see that it's supposed to do that. It's called shading and it happens in some lighter inks. Some people purposefully seek it out (me, I'm people)because it adds dimension with how it darkens in spots where it pools. The original F writing looked solid because the ink feed was still really saturated from filling. At least that the explanation that makes most sense from your writing samples. FYI, Raw Sienna is a shader too. If its something you don't like, you can look up the ink for writing samples or reviews first to make sure its not a shading ink. I have a pen where I never clean and just switch back and forth between two inks because I like how they mix a little bit (ones a darker yellow that shades and one a model golden yellow with gold shimmer and I like the hint of shimmer when its full of the shading ink and the bit darker tone when its filled with the shimmer).
@amandaleighplans

I’m familiar with shading, I have a few inks like that and love them! I just don’t think that’s it because this is more of a scratchy skipping, and even when going back to my F nib it wrote entirely different than originally (aka saturated) - it was still skipping. I think something is wrong with the ink flow or the feed that I must have messed up when swapping. Idk how to explain it, but there is definitely something wrong with it! I also will try my same inks in nibs that are even finer and it’s just a different experience.. I don’t believe it’s the natural properties of the ink. But Kaweco is known for inconsistencies in quality so I guess I can’t be surprised lolol. Funny enough I actually don’t find there’s much shading to Oyster Hour, at least not compared to my inks that have a lot of shading such as Lennon Tool Bar. But I do LOVE inks with shading, I actually prefer them the most!! My favorite is for sure that ‘aunt chair’ by Lennon tool bar… the shading with the green almost reminds me of magic by the way it writes 🤣

@@amandaleighplans ooh, adding those to my list to check out! That makes sense, sorry it wasn’t an easier fix. You can see if flossing it with a shim (basically really thin sheet of brass) or taking the feed and nib out and reseating it to make sure it’s not out of alignment. You can also try doing figure eights on micro mesh or a piece of paper with some tooth to gently polish. Or of course, just buy a new one and sell the old or gift it or something. I only have one Kaweco and didn’t have QC issues, but I’ve definitely heard of the issues with consistency. You won't harm a cheap, plastic, cartridge/converter pen by posting it, but you will form a bad habit. Pilot gold nibs ARE Japanese. Pilot is the biggest pen company in Japan, and also owns Namiki, which makes the most expensive fountain pens in Japan, with the Namiki Maki-e pens running up to fifteen thousand dollars. The Maki-e pens are created painted by a single artisan. They also make Chinkin pens, which are engraved, and only a handful of people in Japan are qualified to do the engraving. The 2000 has the worst gold nib made. It's stiff as a nail, which is the opposite of what a quality gold nib, or any nib, should be, and it has the tiniest sweet spot of any brand name gold nib out there. It definitely is not an exception.

@@amandaleighplans Actually, they are not writing "perfectly". Fountain pens do not write properly in the manner you use them. With only one tine making contact with the paper, the ink will not flow correctly. Kaweco pens are notorious for being particularly finicky if properly aligned with the paper. As you admit, most of your pens are sub $100, thus have less refined nibs. My Lamy Studio and 2000 pens exhibit the same "skipping" phenomenon you describe. I suspect the sub $100 pens have sloppier nib tolerances and better tolerate being used at 90° to the intended orientation. If they work for you, more power to you. However, they would write much better and consistently, if you used them in a more traditional manner.

Well, I greatly prefer a soft gold nib, but in fairness both steel nibs and gold nibs use the same tipping material, and that's all that touches the paper. This means there is no inherent difference in smoothness between steel and gold nibs. A cheap steel nib can be just as smooth as the gold nib on a twelve thousand dollar Namiki Maki-e. That said, assuming you take the time to learn how to properly use a soft gold nib, it offers advantages no steel nib can give. TWSBI pens are made in Taiwan, but wherever a pen is made, you can usually get a very thin line. Just about all pen models have extra fine nibs. Some even have ultra extra fine. Platinum even has an ultra ultra extra fine. That is much thinner than your .38. Most pens run from extra fine of the thin side up to broad on the thick side. Some go up to double broad, or BB. So, from one brand to another, nibs are ultra ultra extra fine, ultra extra fine, extra fine, fine, fine medium, medium, broad, and double broad. The problem with using an extremely thin line with fountain pens is that you're defeating one of the main reasons to use a fountain pen, which is the ink. Fountain pen inks have properties, ranging from shading to sheen. These need thicker lines to be seen well. Sheen can be stunningly beautiful, but it simply doesn't show up well with a thin line. Sometimes not at all. Shimmer inks also work much, much better with a wide line. The wider the better. The more ink a pen puts out, the more shimmer that comes out with it. There's nothing wrong with writing fine. I use a .3 mechanical pencil, and like you, I use a .38 non-fountain pen. When I use a fountain pen, though, I go up to a western fine or a Japanese medium, which are about the same. Sometimes I go up to a western medium because I have three hundred and twenty-six bottles of ink, and it would be pointless to own almost all of them if I used a fountain pen with too fine a line. It's much more than the color of the ink, it's all the ink properties that just don't show up well, or at all, with a line that's too thin.

The Kawecos beeing inconsistent is normally not meaning what you are experiencing. Inconsistent normally means the nib itself. So that one Pen has a smooth nib and the next can have a scratchy nib, which needs some tuning or just doesn't feel as good as another one did. What you show us in the Video ist an issue with the ink flow. That is not the nib, but as far as I know a KAWECO problem. It may come from the feed, or is converter-related. It in my experience depends on the amount of Ink you have in the converter and the feed itself. And, it may also depend on the position you store your pen in. That all together influences the wetness of a Pen, and what you describe as inconsistency would by sonmeone else be seen as shading. You may not be used to that, as a beginner and fine nib user, but that is what all fountain pens do, because of how ink flows and behaves. Ink is always pooling where you lift the nib from the paper. It is only more visible the dryer a pen writes and the broader a nib is. With a very wet nib, you don't see much difference because there's a lot of ink everywhere, so you do not really distinguish the pool at the end of a Line/stroke, which is normal. And of course, certain inks shade better than others. If you don't like shading, use black or darker inks. If you like it, use brighter inks and broader nibs. As long as you use only black or royal blue, you might not get the sense of broader nibs. Because finer nibs are normally wetter and so you don't get as much shading. But, I love writing with fountain pen and ink, because of the shading. That is what makes ink interesting, because out of one and the same ink, you get a variety of shades depending on the pen and paper. If you like wetter writing, store your pen nib-down. But be sure it is a good pen and the temperature is constant. Otherwise it'll leak, which is why you normally store fountain pens nib-up. So the "controlled leak" of the feed is safe, out of the reach of ink due to earth's gravity.

It’s the correct link, that’s the link I bought mine from. I personally don’t put too much stock in Amazon listing titles/descriptions as they don’t always make a lot of sense… for example, it says this is a medium nib and it’s not, it’s medium fine. They always say the names of the pens incorrectly as well. I think the reason is because it’s automatically translated, and translates incorrectly - that’s one of the main reasons for confusing Amazon names and descriptions. You’ll see the pen called harvest moon instead of autumn moon, etc. due to translation. It’s not as streamlined and correct like a USA based Jet Pens listing for example. I look at the reviews instead to get my answers - and I would recommend doing the same, especially the top review for this item! But yes the listing is correct, it’s what I purchased and I received the Pro Gear Slim pen I showed in the video that writes beautifully! Also, sailor pens have gold nibs but gold plated trim. I have written the “correct” way, and do sometimes (holding pen with my fingertips, leaned back at a 45 degree angle) but it’s not as comfy for long term writing as what I do. I hold it up at a higher angle, but it still writes totally fine. If I had known this video would bring me the amount of similar comments I got, I would have held it differently 😂

@@MIZRAIM1906 also, it is cool that you actually learn that as kids in Germany! Not here unfortunately. Speaking of Germany, I saw Sailor has a beautiful new coffee pen coming out as a German exclusive… with a coffee bean on the finial
