Timothy as Mr. Rochester(1983). This is my all time favorite role Timothy has done. What depth and power he brings to his mesmerizing Edward. How do you take a 3+ hour performance and make a 10 minute video?? Bear with me on the length of this video! I have chosen my favorite scenes, lines and just plain breathtaking looks at Rochester. Timothy is so beautiful here, the exquisite words of Charlotte with the voice!!!!! almost unreal. I want Timothy to know there are those of us that admire him for this and other roles and not just JB!!! Enjoy!

Some have said Toby Stephens was the best Rochester ever portrayed on film . Sorry I think they must be deaf dumb and blind. No one, but no one , has played this character better than Timothy Dalton , not even Orson Wells in the 1942 original film . Dalton is superb in his characterisation of this complex and troubled soul. He totally nailed it man , its acting to be truly proud of .

@@barbarav4046 Agreed, Dalton is not only an accomplished actor of stage and screen, but also as you state a very good-looking man. I too was disappointed in the actress who played Jane Eyre. Her emotional range was far too limited, when compared to her character in Charlette Bronte's classic novel. To me it was Timothy Dalton who carried that entire mini-series. The way he portrayed Rochester was spot on with the book.

@@andrewmiller4885Thank you for replying, I totally agree with you. Indeed, it baffles me that most over-praise Zelah and some complain Dalton was too handsome for the role. Even if he was, he nailed it. I cannot think of anyone who managed better. As you said, he carried the entire miniseries on his own because his partner was not up to his acting skills. First of all, it's really ridiculous to believe in the 20 years age gap. Secondly, she just delivered her lines quietly, wearing the same tired, sad expression in every scene they acted together. It's impossible, for me, to believe that a man as passionate and earnest as Rochester could fall in love with such an insipid portrayal of Jane. I mean no disrespect to the actress, but she single-handedly ruined something which could have been a masterpiece. I really feel he deserved a more responsive partner, probably that's why some people say he was too theatrical at times
@andrewmiller4885

@@barbarav4046 Wow , loved what you said and couldn't agree with you more. There was far too much emphasis on Jane Eyre's unattractiveness plainness and simplicity, in this particular screen adaptation of the novel. While it read well in the book, it did not play well on screen. If they were going to be completely true to the character, Jane was also defiant and rebellious, we did not get that from the actress, and who knows perhaps the director wanted her character played that way. Dalton's delivery and interpretation was powerful. We could sense his pain and certainly his pent-up passion and great need for Jane. Zelah on the other hand was even less than mellow.....'the same tired, sad expression in every scene', great comment you gave there and so so accurate . In terms of Timothy Dalton, well what can one say. He is one of the very best actors of my generation and a man who I feel was underrated as a performer. In my opinion I don't think Dalton got the respect and recognition he deserved. This is an industry where a lot of noise is made about certain stars, while some of the greats are ignored. It is also my opinion that Tmothy Dalton was just as good as Sir Lawrence Olivier, if not even a tad better. Just to sum it all up, I think the actress who played Jane was seriously miscast for many reasons. If it were not for Dalton's great acting skills I for one would never have believed he fell in love with jane Eyre, however the audience is thoroughly convinced that he does. That is how good Dalton is. Thank you too for your response.

@@andrewmiller4885I thank you for this conversation and the thoughtful response. Indeed, once again, I agree with everything you said. In these past weeks I had to watch and rewatch this miniseries for translation purposes and realised what a masterpiece it could have been with a different rendition of Jane. For a long time my heart was set on Toby's Rochester as I hadn't watched the 1983 adaptation 'precisely' because I couldn't help thinking the two lead actors were mismatched. In my opinion, she looked way older than him. And, as you say, her plainness doesn't translate well on screen. But it was her portrayal which left me wanting: where is the passion, the inner strength of Jane? Only in her beautifully delivered, but not acted upon, lines? How can a man like Rochester, so full of life and passion, earnest - because despite life's harshness he has a good heart - fall for such a meek Jane? I, too, thought the director wanted a demure version of Jane, but then she sparks a little bit more towards the end, when she acts with other colleagues. I think she suffered Dalton's superior acting skills, he overpowered hers and I completely agree that it's him, and only him, to give credibility to their love story. He was indeed a superb actor who deserved much more. Unfortunately in the movie industry, as in life, very rarely are the most talented rewarded. More often than not, it's the people who compromise and/or get the right connections who get ahead. But, maybe, this is the rant of yet another poor, obscure and little (well, not so little 😊) Jane who has been trampled on once too often

Jane Eyre is my favourite book. Because of Jane. But I never really quite understood why she fell for Rochester. When I read the books and saw the newer adaptations I loved them, but again Rochester was not appealing. But Dalton brings a more withdrawn and hidden gentleness to the character. He's mysterious, eloquent, playfully mischievous, and sad... but when he gets angry... upon my word he is intensely passionate, desperate and miserable... but not cruel. And his chemistry with Zelah as Jane gets built up just right to bkeep you on the edge of your seat. I feel like Dalton really did a great job with this character, I just wish the adaptation was a little more artisticly filmed. Toby is my second favorite.

No disrespect to Dalton, as his performance was outstanding! But this scene is SO cringe! Inappropriate boundary violation. So inappropriate for an employer to act like this. She is not there for his amusement. That being said, Ms. Bronte oversteps the bounds of reality, which is what makes this novel so compelling. Equal amounts of poetry and cringe.

Engaging in behaviour with a willing participant-which is what is being depicted here-isn't "inappropriate boundary violation". And even if there had been scenes showing inappropriate boundary violations, that's something that occurs in real life-and so, just as depictions of many other human frailties and misdeeds are accepted in movies because of an awareness by the audience that it's done by actors in order to contain all the scenes necessary to end up with a story to watch-so also should this be accepted without comment. I wonder if there's similar complaints about all the bloodshed in the great Scorcese gangster movies, or the Godfather movies? Probably not I'm guessing-yet that's an example of far greater evil than some "inappropriate boundary violation". Especially when it's there only in someone's fevered imagination! Some people just lurrrv to take offence!

@@user-rm7zf4bw2b It's the scene in the movie that I said should be accepted without comment, not "your comment should not be commented about". There are several different scenes in this video-all show a man engaging with a woman who responds with some aloofness which is normal at first, but becomes interested enough to willingly allow things to go further. If men always stopped when there wasn't an immediate positive reaction, the current population of planet earth would be about 12.
