Nice introduction to Sky Dolly. I was lucky to find it over a year ago and it's really impressive how well it works. It's great for screen shots as well as videos. I've done some formation work with it as well. You can even change to a different aircraft on the playback, with sometimes comical results, e.g., if you fly a C172 and play back a 787. You can also change weather, time, etc. for playback as it's a full MSFS flight with only the aircraft's "state" controlled by Sky Dolly.

Great video, I have a couple of questions. I fly in VR would Sky Dolly be good to record VR flights? Also, am I right in thinking that on the reply you can move out of the cockpit and do external/drone views? and could I do that from a VR recording?

How do you follow the plane because every time I use drone cam follow mode it follows the plane sitting on the ground and not the one being replayed

Can you save the replays? And, can you start/stop the replay system multiple times and create separate replay files for the same flight?

The flight is automatically stored in the logbook, as also explained in the video. Now when I say „flight“ I really mean the set of „simulation variables“ (position, speed, attitude, gear up/down etc.) that is required to reconstruct (replay) the flight „as visually accurate as possible“, that is with a focus on „movable surfaces“ on the outside (flaps, ailerons, cowl flaps, rudder, …) and including the most essential cockpit elements (stick/yoke, rudder pedals, …). Sky Dolly does not however record or store actual video footage. Use a dedicated screen recording software for this (I use OBS Studio which is also open source). I am not sure what you mean with „to create separate replay files for the same flight“. But Sky Dolly provides a „Formation“ module with which you can record formation flights. You essentially record the first aircraft, and then „rinse and repeat“ by simply clicking the Record button again (while in the Formation module). The clou: Sky Dolly replays all previous recorded aircraft while recording your current user aircraft, so you know exactly where you fly in relation to the other aircraft. Replaying a formation flight? Simply click the Play button (in any module, so also in the Logbook module). And all this with a single Sky Dolly application instance (no need to launch it multiple times). Disclaimer: I am the author of Sky Dolly.

@@till-213 Hi, just wondered if, on replay, other info such as flight plan, etc is restored. I'm wondering about flying a SID and landing and then replaying so that I can go "live" and then practice over and over landing without having to reimport flight plan etc. on Fenix 320.

@@chantscreen Hello! No, Sky Dolly does not record (store) the flight plan. At this point Sky Dolly only records "the essential simulation variables that are needed to *visually* re-create the flight as close as possible". That mostly includes "external surfaces" (flaps, ailerons, rudder, gears, ...), but also some selected cockpit elements (rudder peddals, thrust lever, ...). But not other instrument settings such as selected radio frequencies, flight plans or any other "advanced" cockpit instruments. That said, there is the possibility with the SimConnect API to store the "entire flight" into a file. I believe this would also store the flight plan. This is something I had in mind to explore further, but I am not yet sure what the implications would be if Sky Dolly would then "load" this "flight" (I believe it is even called "Flight Plan", extension *.pln or so...) before every replay: I am afraid this would throw the replay back to the "flight loading screen" each time - but not sure. As I said, this is something I want to experiment with at some later point...

@@chantscreen However Sky Dolly *does* record the waypoints you have actually flown: open the "Flight" dialog (key F) and you will see the flight plan waypoints with the actual time of arrival (and the actual order in which they were flown). In fact, you can also see all "simulation variabels" that are actually begin recorded by Sky Dolly: simply open the "simulation variables" dialog (key V).

And saving the file? What kinds of formats are possible? mp3, mp4, mpg, mpeg?
@bruceirving7080

The file is unique to Sky Dolly as it is "recording" the state of the aircraft over time, like (x,y,z,vx,vy,vz) plus aircraft orientation and extra variables like flap and gear position. The "flight recording" file is not a video. To make a video, you play back the flight (with any view changes etc. as shown in this demo) and record it with your favorite video capture tool (I use the NVIDIA screen recorder).
