I use this tool and Love it! Very simple to use and smooth unlike the Asobo replay. Don't know why Asobo had to make it so complicated and not like this.

Although Sky Dolly seems not too obvious - or, better, what seems obvious it is not, I guess I am going to manage, thanks to this very video of yours (downloaded Sky Dolly last year but never really used it, because I had first to practice a little bit in MSFS 2020, as I come from a long X-Plane - v7 then v8, then v9, then v10, and a tiny bit of v11, then I stopped - experience on Mac, started exactly 20 years ago up until 2015, or so, for what I can recall 😅). Thank you, again.

Nice video, thanks. How do you change camera views on replay - within Skydolly or within the sim itself? Say I want to review a landing in an A320 from inside the cabin over the wing looking towards an engine - do I need to have custom cameras set up within the sim itself or can you move the viewpoint in Skydolly?

Hi Pilot Studd, So first time seeing this video and thanks for the explanations. Just one question, if you click on a previously saved recording, do you need to preset location and aircraft in the sim or will it simply just play like a recorded movie? Thanks

You don’t have to preset the location- it will automatically teleport there, from wherever you started the sim. HOWEVER… you do have to preselect the correct plane, that was used in the recording, or else it will try to play back with whichever plane you currently have loaded. Hope this helps.

Does it work with Fenix? When fast forwarding the plane fell into a dive / on my second run through the plane landed but there were no animations and the engines and batteries were off

So Sky Dolly only records joystick, throttle, flap inputs etc., not the actual flown track of the aircraft, and if for example the weather changes or if it somehow forgets to lower the flaps, the aircraft could lose control or land away from the runway?

No it records the track as well, so weather has no impact.

Same issues here as with Flight Recorder, I am afraid: like some other 3rd party aircraft the FBW A320nx uses custom simulation logic that does not expose / react to the „official“ „simulation variables“.

I tried this one with the a2a commanche and it was an abolute disaster. engine shutdowns, gear not dropping, flaps not dropping etc... So in that regard its not much better than the default replay tool. The interface however is way better than the default. So I will definitely try this again in another aircraft.

How does it handle repleys with landing gear with the PMDG? I have a hard time getting the gear to retract or extend during play back

It’s a bit on and off, but I find it accurately replays if you don’t make too many big jumps through the replay. You can go into the cockpit and sort out the gear yourself and it should replay fine from that.

Especially 3rd party aircraft use their own simulation logic for certain aircraft systems such as hydraulics (affecting e.g. gears and flaps). Such custom simulations do not expose their internal „local variables“, nor do they react to the standard „simulation variables“ available via the official SimConnect API. That is why Sky Dolly cannot properly record and replay those systems. However I am looking into other means in order to get at least flaps and gears working. By the way, Sky Dolly focuses on those „simulation variables“ that have a „visual impact“ (mostly outside of the aircraft, but also the most important cockpit elements like rudders and peddals), but not „details“ like switching radio channels. Assuming that most people are interested in watching their landings „from outside“. But more supported „simulation variables“ may be added over time.

You’ll need a screen recorder like OBS, replay it on MSFS and record it with an external recorder.

Would this be a good tool to create custom AI departures and arrivals with other aircraft. For instance: to record a flight departure, save, reload as another aircraft, this time fly into the airport and land, do that multiple times until I have a living breathing airport with totally custom aircraft movements that I can then use to simulate a busy airport for movie making purposes?

Hi Peter, that is somewhat possible. Ai Models might not look or sound the best on film but I have done a similar thing like that, filming vehicles as AI and then using them for cinematics.

It is your recordings that will take up space. This tool on its own is tiny - just 28mb.

No it doesn’t take too much space, recordings are relatively small and delete them on the go to keep file size as small as possible.

Recordings take up very, very little space, it’s not like it’s recording video, it’s only a text file with statements about the state of the aircraft so many times a second, which it then plays back by moving the plane according to that text with some interpolation to smooth it out.

@@WhiteHawk77 It is actually a proper database rather than a simple text file ;) But yes, it is a „single file“ based database: SQLite, in fact ;) You can open it with some SQLite database browser and explore the tables and data with your own SQL queries.

How does it work on vatsim? Does it replay the movements of other planes on the network? Also, if I replay a recorded flight, will other aircraft and/or atc see my plane reenact the flight?

SimConnect (the API that is used by 3rd party apps like Sky Dolly to comunicate with MSFS) only allows to get access to other „AI objects“ („AI aircraft“), but not actual multiplayer aircraft. However Sky Dolly does not record - yet (?) - other „AI aircraft“ (like injected real-world traffic).

You can play around with the speed of replay and then speed it up in your video editor to bring it up to 60fps, the plane will look smooth but everything around it may look odd!

I still don't understand how X-Plane can make an outstandingly accurate and easy to use replay system stock in their sim. Whereas Microsoft a multi billion dollar fortune 500 company can't do better than this trash system we have currently. Skydolly is indeed very nice, but, would be great to have an X-Plane level replay.

isn't it amazing how hard it is to find an answer to this question? i see the issue all over forums, no answer, yet see it working in some videos and only 1 person asking on this video. i have the same issue, am aware of the shortcomings, yet no response from the maker of the video or anyone. i don't understand how some are getting it to work or why it's so hard to get a solution on this. 3 months and still no response from anyone. this must be a classified secret to a few that know how to do it and don't want to share the info. 😂

Any aircraft that uses custom code to do things instead of standard sim code are going to have this issue with any recorder, Flight Recorder is the same, but that’s the price for a more realistic aircraft, may have the same issue with the A2A GA aircraft when they release.

If there's a workaround, fine, but I just wish 1 person would answer the question so we all can know. i've tried to manually do it, panel states, etc. nothing works. but people like maxifly737 and others, they don't seem to have issues creating content. i believe they have the same issue as I do, but what are they doing and why won't anyone answer it or share their knowledge of what their workaround is. it's top secret lol

@@ryanmann3412 they are probably not getting it to work, they are probably doing those things manually at the right time as the replay progresses as you can still manipulate things while it plays as the sim itself doesn’t know it’s in a replay. That said I’ve never used the built in developer replay tool so I don’t know if that’s any different but for external ones they are all the same from what I’ve seen.

Yes, from what I think he said, if you mouse the timeline back- instead of hitting the Play button- you can re-fly your recorded flight, but with a new controlled outcome.

Is there a record cache storage location? where is that location? I'm afraid the record cache has a very large size because my SSD is almost full

Keep only base game on SSD. Everything else like mods and recordings can be on another huge disk.

You can adjust where you want the ‘logbook’ to save, they’re relatively small in size but you can select it’s location.

@@BocahXGamers unfortunately not supported, as the FBW A32NX uses its own custom simulation for hydraulics - the used „local variables“ are not exposed via the SimConnect API that is used to communicate with MSFS. The same problem exists for other replay tools, including the built in replay tool (I assume - haven‘t actually tested it much).

Minimal impact when flying (I haven’t noticed) but when you replay and teleport back to the start you can expect some loading in lag.

That is only a problem for (third party) aircraft that use their own simulation logic, e.g. for the hydraulics system: those aircraft do not expose the official „simulation variables“ (nor do they react to changes in them) via the SimConnect API. Sadly that includes the popular FBW A320nx and the Fenix A320.

Much better than FlightRecorder? Actually doesnt need anythin fancy. But I hate the gear-bug on the FlightRecorder + it seem to produce weird graphics in the main menues etc in FS. =( Maybe this i better?

In my opinion, seeing as it’s free, yes! FCR is a more powerful tool but SkyDolly does the basics and does them well.

the problem with "replay" tools, or with native Replay, is that it is not functionnal ! ... well this works, but you see your plane with gear always down, flaps always down, and no interaction recorded. This makes a nearly shut off plane... magically flying in the air. LOL . . . and if you deal to video rec the main flight, while recording it with replay tool : the game will nearly crash to CTD, or having weird random behaviour in flight ! ONLY X-PLANE is real well made with it's native replay, always activated, and recording ALL bsasic aircrafts and maybe some addons aircrafts functions !

Yeah its only experimental though. You have to enable it in the development menu. It's really not great though

Sky Dolly does not record actual video data, but instead the most important „simulation variables“ that are required to reconstruct the flight in MSFS. Hence you need to launch MSFS and start a flight in order to „replay a recorded flight“. You can use e.g. OBS Studio to capture your screen or better: a selected window and store it as video. OBS is also open source.

doesn't work with all the planes, and definitely NOT all airliner. I've had several ctd due to it, huge ghost airplane silhouette on the world, in the start menu. And it doesn't record all wing surface movement nor respect engine power setting during the recording. I'm happy it works for you guyes, but it is not as intuitive it pretends to be, nor compatible with all type of airplanes.

Doesn t work at all. When I load the flight it takes me somewhere along the way and I crash

1. Are you letting the plane come to a full stop, after landing, before hitting the Stop button on the sky Dolly? 2. Are you then hitting the Play button, to start the recorded flight from the very beginning? Or mousing over the time line button and dragging it backwards to somewhere in mid flight? The latter, allows you to control the plane and make corrections, while in the midst of playing back your recording. However, it will also crash the plane if you’re not making the necessary adjustments to control it…. (because you’re only sitting there watching it, which I presume is what you want to do). If you start from beginning by hitting play button, the flight locks in place, and you can’t alter it by moving the controls. *That’s the scenario you want.*
