Hi John, thanks for the great video. I intend to grab a 4090 for some machine learning model training. I will likely be running these cards for hours or even days consecutively. Do you think the slight temperature benefits of the water cooled card makes a significant difference for this use case? I don't intend to overclock, but worry that running a card continuously for long periods of time could damage it.
@JohnLCharette
@JohnLCharette Жыл бұрын
Hey Samuel, I wouldn’t worry about it at all. Crypto miners have been using their cards 24/7 for years and they air cool. Liquid cooling is a pain to maintain. Sure, it will be 10C cooler, but I wouldn’t worry about it. These cards are designed to run non-stop. Clean the fans and possibly replace the thermal pads once a year and you’re good! Machine learning? That sounds interesting. What industry do you work in?

@@JohnLCharette Thanks for the reply John! I don't think you mentioned why liquid cooling is hard to maintain in the video. I thought for AIOs you basically just install and forget about them. Anything else to consider? I am a graduate student studying artificial intelligence :)

Oh no, sorry. I thought you meant buying the air cooled version and installing your own water block with a custom loop. If you purchased the AIO, then you’re good. No maintenance required. As I mentioned in the video, if you have room for the 240mm rad, than the Liquid X is a great choice. For you though, either solution will work. All fans will need to be cleaned. If you plan on replacing the thermal pads, I would imagine the air cooled one is easier to change. Let me know which way you decide.

I really wanted a Aorus 4090 master since I just love the design (had the 3070ti version of it) but it doesn’t really seem to fit in my case (lian li 011 dynamic midi) since the high costs of the gpu’s (22/2300€) I decided to go for the Suprim X and will be getting the liquid version :) I can’t wait! I have a question about the temperature. I saw some YT videos showing the data that the Vram temperature at the LC type is higher than the AC type (about 5 Celsius). But you say all temperatures at the LC type are better than the AC type. I don't know that is the MSI improves it in the new product or for other reasons. Do you have some data to show the result?

@Scott, I experienced MUCH better VRAM temps with the LC version. I just reviewed footage of temps while benchmarking and the AC's VRAM topped out at 78C, where as the LC was 62C in the same test (Heaven 4.0). The max core temps were 60C in the LC and 68C with the AC version. I highly recommend the LC version if you're looking for lower temps.

What about the Aorus 4090 with it's 360mm rad? You could have that shooting out the side of your case and it wouldn't look too bad. I haven't tried the Aorus, but you may be able to replace the fans with your own SLs to keep your aesthetic. Or, replace the fans on the Suprim with SLs would work too but you'd want to add an additional 120mm so that it looks like it's taking up the full 360mm.

Hey, just caught a Suprim 4090 Liquid X, I would have loved to get the Suprim X Air cooled, not because of issues with mounting the rad, but with issues with the complexity of the AIO system, value in the time of the card, resale sentiment, which is more challenging for liquid cards to get sold when I upgrade, rather than the easier air ones, lifetime span as AIO usually die faster than air-cooled ones. I also saw a lot of initial reviews that the 4090 Liquid X has really high temps of Memory, as the water block does not cover the memories, so those are served only by the small fan on the GPU. How is yours working on time? I also managed to snag a 4090 FE, should I refund the 4090 Liquid X or try to sell the 4090 FE? Or should I keep the 4090 FE and if I really need it buy a water block for it? Was also watching the 4090 Gigabyte OC, and saw that this gen was really good, and people also recommended Aorus 4090 Master. The issue is that after sticking gold with Aorus 1080, the 2080 TI and 3080 were a disaster. Also, I have their motherboard, which is really solid constructed hardware wise but the software they have has been horrible. So yeah, any recommendations?

Hey! Thanks for tuning in. Of all the 4090s I've reviewed so far, the Suprim X LC was the best performing card. I just reviewed footage of temps while benchmarking and the AC's VRAM topped out at 78C, where as the LC was 62C in the same test (Heaven 4.0). But, I completely agree that a LC card is harder to resell later on. If you're like me and switch cards often. I'd stick with the 4090 FE, unless you put a water block on it, because then you're in the same boat. Tough to sell. Overall, the 4090 FE is a great card, check out my review here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rsqbo6mSltrUZo0.html I haven't tried out any 4000 series Gigabyte OC variant. As you mentioned, they haven't had great history and I tend to stay away from them. In the end, it's going to come down what type of person you are. Do you want bling? You'll want an AC card. If you're straight performance, than the Suprim X LC works really well. I have heard people complain about coil whine, which I didn't have with mine. Let me know what you end up doing. I'm curious to hear your thought process. Thanks again!
@Sapca1111
@Sapca1111 Жыл бұрын
@@JohnLCharette Most likely it will come down to, temperatures, especially those RAM temperatures, acoustics and coil whine. No, I do not want bling. My PC case is a Meshify S2 and I put it on the floor, no one will look at it, and I am not that interested in RGB. I am on performance, but I am not sure I want to overclock it that much, especially since people tend to underclock them. I also want the card to not be huge, and the Liquid X helps with that, but it occupies a bigger height, cause you cannot bend the tubing that much. Still should have space in my PC without problems. I guess the GPU is really great vertically, for smaller form factors. Also is it worth it to pay 446 Euros more on it, for a minimal FPS performance increase? Actually, the difference is in thermals and acoustics. No... I don't think so. Writing that now, seeing the price diff in euros, rather than country currency really opens up my eyes. Suprim X Liquid was 2699 Euros yesterday and just came back in stock today for 2353 Euros. But Nvidia FE was 1907 euros. The issue is that I had to dropship it, and while the warranty is in my name, the address is in another country and the warranty can become difficult I guess. Most likely if there are no issues I will keep the 4090 FE. I am also not that inclined and technically savvy to put a water block on the 4090 FE, so it's either an AIO version or a air-cooled one. Will look at your 4090 FE review. But most likely as I said if there is no issue with the 4090 FE I get, and having more awareness of the price diff, I will keep the 4090 FE. You can put that price diff on getting a really good X670E motherboard or money toward a 7000X3D CPU if those get announced soon.

I think one of the pros for liquid cooling is sound. For example, the liquid cool card may be able to run at 80% power output with a relatively low fan speed. Any comment on that?
@JohnLCharette
@JohnLCharette Жыл бұрын
100% agree. From what I know, you can run your fans much slower to cool the liquid inside a radiator vs higher speed fans to remove heat from a heatsink. I often hear people talk about how silent liquid cooling builds are in general. Thanks for adding this information :)

@@JohnLCharette The fans on the radiator are far bigger in diameter (120mm) than the fans that the air coolers use which seem to be 80/100mm. I genuinely have no idea why they keep making the fans on aircooled cards so small. Probably cheaper for them.

May I ask which card is the quietest? I came here because I was looking for a replacement for my RTX 2070 Super Gigabyte model I’ve used for about 3 years. I’ve been looking forward to getting the RTX 4090, and after careful online research, I found that the MSI SUPRIM X model of the 4090 happens to be one of the QUIETEST and would seem like the perfect choice. However, not long after research, I found that the MSI SUPRIM X RTX 4090 has a few variants; most notably the air-cooled model and the “LIQUID X” model. As OtakuChad noted in the comment section, I too was concerned that there may not be enough room in my PC to install the LIQUID X model.
@JohnLCharette
@JohnLCharette 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for tuning in! I believe the Liquid X is quieter, but I wouldn't say by much. When I recorded this, I wasn't doing complete audio-level tests to confirm, so that's just my opinion. I highly recommend both cards, but if you have the space for the 240mm rad, go for the Liquid X. One thing to consider is the re-sellability of the Liquid X. It will be harder to re-sell vs the standard Suprim X. Not sure if that's matters or not to you.
@jltrain-zgamingrailfan202x3
@jltrain-zgamingrailfan202x3 6 ай бұрын
@@JohnLCharette Thanks John. Re-sellability is not really a concern for me at this time. I've been doing more research online and I've read that, many say that while liquid-cooled GPUs are efficient for cooling, they are more maintenance-intensive compared to air-cooled variety. I've also done more research on the noise levels; and according to TechPowerUp, the noise level for the MSI RTX 4090 Suprim X is measured at 28.6 - 32.6 dBA (running at 1198 - 1466 RPM), whereas the MSI RTX 4090 Suprim Liquid X is measured at 29.0 - 32.2 dBA (running at 1105 - 1197 RPM). But at the same time, I saw that the Liquid X's RPM is slightly lower compared to the Suprim X; which really makes me wonder how (in the case of the MSI RTX 4090 Suprim X) running at a higher RPM makes a smaller noise; which just really makes the Suprim X look like a great deal. After all, unlike the Liquid X, the Suprim X has the typical characteristic 3-fan frame; just like my RTX 2070 Super Gigabyte model; despite being slightly larger.
@JohnLCharette
@JohnLCharette 6 ай бұрын
This is great information! Thanks for sharing. My experience is that the Liquid X's fans spun slower and were less loud than the Suprim X, but I didn't actually measure. As for the maintenance of the Liquid X, there is none. It's an all-in-one sealed loop. You should never open it. If it was a custom loop, then yes, you should clean the loop every 6-12 months, but you don't have to worry about that with the Liquid X card.

These cards are closed-loop, so you can't replace the liquid. Most all-in-one closed-loop solutions are good for 5-7 years. It's unlike a custom loop, where you need to replace the cooling every 6-12 months. I'd bet that it will continue to outperform the air-cooled version. I wish I still had these cards. When I bought them, I had already re-sold them to someone else so I couldn't test them for long. I usually buy cards, review them and then re-sell them as fast as I can so that I can use that money to buy more cards ;)

Yup, good call. I also don’t have room for the 240mm radiator so I would choose air cooled as well. Hope you love it.

I have the suprim x and the highest temps i got was 71. The only time i reach that was playing the unoptimized Jedi survivor epic settings with ray tracing. Benchmarking never passed 68 on that card. Maybe you had a faulty one, but Suprim X, especially even more OC'ed is a beast. It uses as much power as 3090 strix oc, very quiet, doesn't get hot at all and easily plays all games at Max setting at 4k, unless they are unoptimized mess and cpu bound.

@JohnLCharette 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, I have a feeling you are right. I wasn't able to overclock this one much at all.. I've heard stories of people really pushing the Suprim cards even harder than the Strix cards. When I reviewed them, they were very early.. so maybe I got a dud.
@resulnaki
@resulnaki 10 ай бұрын
@@JohnLCharette yeah could be. I don't overclock too much, I just added +150 on the core and +150 on the memory, and it's been stable ever since.

pro tip: you compress the audio too much (dynamic compression) and that brings up the room tone considerably.

Awesome. I guess I can get one once the 5000 series nVidia GPUs come out. Cause, you know, like nowhere in stock, and where I can find it, it's like 175% higher than MSRP. So.... I guess I should start a review channel to get one......

@Sparky, yeah it can be frustrating to find cards when they first come out. I wish my channel was big enough that companies sent me cards. @@JohnLCharette Thanks. Will look into it. Just FYI, they're now selling this card in my country for about $1000 over the MSRP...... I'd buy from the states, but I gotta deal with whether it can be shipped Int'l or not.
