Indeed. I have no problem with swearing, but it's 2023. It's not even shocking anymore, and just saying the f word doesn't make a routine funny. Seriously. And...it's more fun to have to think about it a minute to "get" the joke, and to be able to appreciate the creativity writers had to use back then! Crawford's kennel quip is funnier than a million b words.

The Casablanca line (and there are MANY really cutting put downs in that movie) is one of my faves of all time. My other favorite put down in Casablanca was delivered to Major Strasser (the major villain) by Captain Renault. Gone with the Wind: too bad they truncated the quote in the movie. In the book it’s the best paragraph of all time: “Scarlett, I was never one to patiently pick up broken fragments and glue them together and tell myself that the mended whole was as good as new. What is broken is broken-and I’d rather remember it as it was at its best than mend it and see the broken places as long as I lived. Perhaps, if I were younger-” he sighed. “But I’m too old to believe in such sentimentalities as clean slates and starting all over. I’m too old to shoulder the burden of constant lies that go with living in polite disillusionment. I couldn’t live with you and lie to you and I certainly couldn’t lie to myself. I can’t even lie to you now. I wish I could care what you do or where you go, but I can’t.” He drew a short breath and said lightly but softly: “My dear, I don’t give a damn.”

Markus, great call out! I love the book too and have read it twice. The line is great either way. Loved it in the book and loved the “Frankly” added for the movie. Producer David O. Selznick actually added the “Frankly” because he felt it needed some extra oomph. And fought the sensors hard to use the line itself. Thankfully, we have both the book and film to enjoy. I do have to say I love both equally, one does not cheat each other. That is a rare exception from book to film I think.

I am quite glad they didn't include the whole speech in the movie. Books are a different medium from films. The only have words (and, in some cases, typography) to get the message accross, while there are many, many ways in a film to do the same thing (acting, voice, lighting, costumes, sets, music etc.). It is also true that many book adaptations to film suffer from too much verbal exposition, because the scriptwriters are unable to really translate the story to another medium.

Yes! A&C were a Sunday morning WPIX mainstay when I was little, and my husband and I watch on DVD/streaming/YT every Sunday still! Our favorite A&C burn, though, is from A&C Meet The Killer Boris Karloff. Boris tries to hypnotize Lou into killing himself, quite unsuccessfully. Frustrated, Boris sighs and says "Amazing! Even under hypnosis, the will of an idiot to cling to life". Love that line! Runner up: A: "What makes a balloon go up?" C: "Hot air." A: "What's holding you down?"

I know! I actually saw it in theaters, the first time for me seeing it with a crowd, for the 60th Anniversary, I had seen it many many times at home. The thing that cracked me up was when Scarlett, said to Ashley about Melanie, toward the end when Melanie was dying, “You really love her and not me”. Some guy in the audience yelled out,” Well duh!” I laughed so hard!😂

I’ve always thought if Ashley had grown a spine & told Scarlett that he didn’t love her, that he was deeply in love with Melanie, she’d gotten over him quickly and realized that she loved Rhett. I always disliked Ashley. I just wish that Scarlett realized how much she loved & depended on Melanie as a friend & sister before it was too late

In the novel, Wilkes comes off better than he does in the movie. In the movie he seems weak and indecisive, in the novel it's more a matter of the codes and way he was raised that keeps him from doing what he should, he's not weak or afraid, but he's hamstrung by his raising. At one point the narrator even notes that Ashley and Rhett are the only males Scarlett can't quite comprehend or understand because they were both adults to her perpetual adolescence.

To me that's sometimes better about writers back in the day having to be wittier with dialogue like in 1958's Auntie Mame where Rosalind Russell picks up a pencil and tells Patrick Dennis - "... that is a 'B', Darling! It's the first letter of a seven letter word that means your late father...!" (As she proceeds to jot it down on his list of words he doesn't understand!) Way more effective than the later actual use in "Mame", coming later on on stage and cinema!

Most people would probably not consider "McLintock!" a classic movie (though it is my favorite John Wayne movie), but it's got some pretty good burns between John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. Case in point: "Katherine, the first thing I learned about fighting Indians is to wait until daybreak." "What does Indian fighting have to do with this conversation?" "Indian fighting is good experience for our kind of conversations!"
