Donald Trump surrogate Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) responds to saying “during Jim Crow the Black family was together” during a Tuesday Black voter outreach event for the former president, suggesting that Jim Crow had positive aspects despite it being a time of brutal social and political oppression for African-Americans. Rep. Donalds joins Joy Reid to discuss the backlash.

when did he say that? he said "we're starting to see the reinvigoration of black family and that helps breed a revival of a black MIDDLE class. during jim crow, the black family was together.' this sounds like he's implying that black people were enjoying the benefits of a middle class during jim crow and were voting conservatively. my mom's great cousin is in her mid 90s and has nothing but negative things to say about that timepoint, including the black family structure.

No gangs, bloods, cripts, etc. We were not burying young black boys. Even though the law didn't protect black families, a man was still needed in the home. His wife and children needed him. He is still needed today, and the poorest among black people are filling their homes up with children who are daddyless. The women who make that choice are the least of us who will ever get married. I know people say marriage is not for everyone, but when you start having babies it should be for you. What about the total growth of the children? Too much to talk about here, the mind is processing too fast.☮️

Lawd, you can tell the kinda audience this is. Everyone is so hung up on the fact that he mentioned Jim Crow, they can't get the basic point. He was saying that in a DARK time in black history, we were together. So if we could be together in our darkest time, we should certainly be together now. All folks can care about is that he mentioned it. Its TRUE. As a matter of fact, because of the strength of the black family, black men & boys were *intentionally* targeted, in order to sew the seeds. Sooooo the yeah, the man in the home disempowered BECAUSE his role had power to begin with. This is why the left keeps losing the black population, the obsession with seeing us through the lens of suffering & being disgusted by black positivity in our history. This was gross to watch & it broke my heart.

All he did was try to reframe the narrative, and that's what you're also trying to do. Black people's families and the like were shackled gaged separated and tortured during that era and the only reason they stuck together was because of fear and the racist overtone that they had to live with ! There was no family life for black men & women during that era. These are facts so stop trying to change the narrative. What you want is to bring back this fear today by continuing the racist cult-like hatred that was adopted from that so-called Dark time in Black History. The similarity is today people still come together when they are faced with this racial hate current day....ie. George Floyd! The thing you Republicans can't accept is that today white and black people come together in these moments and they come with no fear! You say, "The left isn't losing the black population"...that's your dream so you can elect a dictator that you worship that will continue to try and separate the black & white unity. That's not going to happen and that isn't democracy! Wake Up!

Well I guess I’m insane. My parents were born during that time. My father, who was 20 years older than my mother, was born in 1905. My mother was born in 1923. Both born in the Jim Crow South. I was born near the end of the era I. 1952. I refuse to look at it as a painful period. Was it different from your era. Depending on your age and where you grew up; yes. But my mine and my family’s was so much better than the time of the slaves. I look at slavery and I have so much admiration for those that chose to took that time and opportunity to do great things when the opportunities presented themselves. It is because of decisions not to internalize that pain that we have HABUs. Many of the things you take advantage of was born out of so call “painful” times in history, i.e the traffic lights we run sometimes. Don’t be ashamed to mention those times. Some of the most prized things in life come during painful times. Look up how a diamond is formed. Do some reading on KZfaq about Lionel Riches and his ancestors during Jim Crow.

Sir, I dont want to bring you any disrespect and Im sure we have a common desire to see the black community succeed. But I just want to pose a question. Exactly how did the black family unit stay more intact under the hardships of Jim Crow, which was evil, than during the welfare acts after and leading to today? I think we can both agree that america is way less racist today than back then? We are talking a 25% single mother rate then as opposed to 75% today! That fact should make you question some things. That is what the gentleman was trying to point out, not that Jim Crow was somehow good. That proves that black community has the backbone, resilience, and moral character to help itslef and some people feel that is a better path forward than welfare that incentivizes poor behavior that leads to despair regardless of race. I feel the real racism is thinking that black community can only thrive through handouts.

Donalds's point is that the conservative nature of blacks is what sustained the black family even through the hardships of Jim Crow. It was, in part, when blacks began to turn toward Democrat liberal programs that the black family was all but destroyed. Nearly 80% of black children grow up without their fathers. Again, nearly 8 out of every 10 black kids grow up without their dads. Yet blacks are abusing Donalds's point to help Democrats when it is Democrats who are sinking the black family. That is what is truly disgusting and disheartening.

And a missed opportunity for radical Joy to discuss the negative effects of 66% of black children being born to SINGLE mothers - which the welfare system & liberal Govt has fostered & exploited!!! Statistics DO NOT lie! Byron Donald’s is saying that EVEN in the worst of times the black family (parents) remained together.

There is no Black folks in MAGA world who can be honest about racism and be a prominent voice. They have to pretend racism was not that bad or never happen. If Criminal Byron Donald's ever said anything else, they will make him wish he was in Jim crow era. This guy knows it . Don't tell black folks how to live when you not living such experience having a white family. The setting that you are describing and lecture one about you don't live it brother. Nothing wrong with your choice, but stay in your lane Criminal Byron Donald's. we know your checker past Mr. high and might Donald's. Lets be honest about crime and poverty. You look at eastern Europe the crime is high, white and white crimes. Most of it is poverty just like anywhere else. yet the media don't give those countries and neighborhood the same coverage. why they want to pretend blacks are the problem or brown people. More crime occur where there are poverty and the unbalance of opportunities.

Twisting the real point has become a trade for people these days. I think the congressman was trying to say that even as bad as the Jim Crow era was, marriages lasted longer than what it is now. He never called it a golden age . I think we should be respectful and responsible. The real point we should have been interested in is "why are marriages not lasting these days and what can we do to make it better?" We cannot deny the fact that children need both parents. Statistics says it all when you look at the relationship between crime rates and broken homes. Can we be sober and stop the politics for once?

You dems are just out of your minds with all the spin, TDR, incompetency, and gas lighting. Everything that this man said is fact, but you want to focus on the term Jim Crowe. In fact, you should focus on it, and here is the question you should ask, that he failed to explain. How exactly did black families do better from a structure standpoint in a way more racist society than what we have today? Do you understand that? It is statistical fact that pre great society/civil rights act that black families only had a 25% single motherhood rate. After that, and leading to today the rate is over 75%. That is horrible and what you should care about other than this fake outrage being vomited out your mouths. As someone who is for the success of the black community, I think every possible step should be taken to combat this problem, which is the common denominator to success or poverty regardless of race. Look at the stats, take fathers out the home for any race and the outcome is the same. Unfortunately, the black community has had to struggle with this always, starting with the effects of broken families through slavery, and on into the fallout from incentivizing single motherhood through great society/wellfare acts. Strangly, the only time they did not suffer from single motherhood was during the racist Jim Crowe. To me this showed the backbone, resiliency, and moral fiber of black people when they could only depend on themselves. Nobody, is advocating a return to Jim Crowe, just pointing out that black people are strong enough to help themselves and that some of these acts that were supposed to help, only crippled. We should learn from this and find a better path instead of gaslighting and trying to twist the narrative based off terminology.

She is a professional and you must ALWAYS be ready to face the music with a professional black woman. In order to achieve what she has achieved, she had to be overqualified in the first place. In my opinion, he was just not ready. I have two degrees, and I was an excellent student. There were certain classes that I could walk into and pass with an exceptional score with minimal studying time. Then there were classes such as Statistics and Quantitative Methods that took more time, thought, and studying so that I could score extremely high grades. When dealing with someone of Joy's caliber and political strength, he DID NOT do his homework! I am truly embarrassed for him. His face being boxed up like that says a lot.

Joy uses a familiar formula: Take a statement by a conservative, ignore its plain meaning (in this case, that before President Lyndon B. Johnson's "war on poverty" welfare programs, Black family units were stronger, despite the oppression they endured), and substitute a completely false idea that Donalds praised the Jim Crow era. And then, after laying out the indisputable evils of those Jim Crow laws, he ends by misleadingly saying that Donalds claimed "Black people had it better during the Jim Crow days." Joy should know that everyone has a right to their own opinions but not to their own facts.

What I would get out of what he said is that Black families were more together under oppression. We had to be. And btw, it didn't start off like. Right after slavery there were a lot of homes where the father wasn't really there because that's what they did in slavery. The slave owners separated the men from the women, so a Black man would sleep with many women. But as time moved on Black men became more committed to his family unit. What Rep. Donalds is saying, is that the Democrats have found a way to weaken the Black family unit without physically lynching the Black man. The policies in government encourage mothers to be single and have fathers out of their homes. You always hear Democrats talk about how the SCOTUS gutted the Voting Rights Act. They never tell you how. But Section 4 and 5 of the VRA were never meant to be permanent. Section 2 on the other hand can do everything that's needed to enforce voting rights. The only difference is that Section 4 had a road block and made certain states and districts with a history of disenfranchising (minority) voters - such as New York City - get preclearance with the DOJ before any new district lines could go forward. But let's say that a city or state disagreed with a negative outcome. It could go to court and try to have a court disagree with the DOJ. That can still happen. An aggrieved party can go to the DOJ with a complaint, and perhaps court. But oftentimes the DOJ would side or decide not to intervene leaving a disgruntled person or group no other choice but court. Obama and Eric Holder could have created new preclearance measures when Congress was all Democrat. But they didn't. So the use of the word "gutted" without explaining anything is Democrat Slickness.
