“I knew I didn’t want to make a documentary. Documentaries are what I use to convey information. I wanted people to be able to feel emotion and empathy,” says writer, producer and director Ava DuVernay on adapting her new film, “Origin,” which is in theaters Jan. 19.

I'm getting a feeling that 2024 word of the year could well be ACCOUNTABILITY. People are questioning why a lot of injustices aren't being addressed.

With Oversight comes Accountability. This is precisely why CONservatives pretend that "smaller government" (IRS, EPA, etc...) saves Us Tax Payers $$. That is just crazy. Transparency $ave$ U$ Tax PAYER$ money. Notice how John Stewart held the Military Industrial Complex spokesperson to the question of "Audit"? She had her tongue so twisted she was choking on it.

One of the things I have learned this past year is that my daughter did the ancestry test and I found out that we as a family have traces of every continent including Africa of which we have a two percent, in fact we have Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, indigenous people and so I have come to the conclusion that we are all connected and no one is completely pure. We have to start thinking that we are all just people living in this one planet and start thinking that we all have feelings and we have been hurting each other and for what? Stupid pride that in the scheme of things it is meaningless and start thinking that we are all created by one source and it’s for a reason: to learn a very difficult subject: to learn to love each other and remembering His words: to love each other as He loves us. I will surely go and watch the film.

THIS!!!!! I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS MOVIE!!! I remember living in China in 2018 as an FBA and making so many connections between research I'd done since the 90's and the experiences I was having as an "other" on my own in Asia. And I had an epiphany...that America has a very disinct and working caste system. I had mentioned this realization to an Anglo American friend of mine who was with me in Asia...and though she'd been married to an African man and had African children, my words sounded like gibberish to her. She didn't get it. I kept my thoughts to myself... Then a couple years later Isabel Wikerson released the book CASTE and I felt seen and understood. Here was a kindred spirit. I bought it immediately... And now there's a MOVIE!!!!

I had the honor of meeting Ms Isabel Wilkerson in Portland Oregon before the covid debacle. Not only is she a gifted and intelligent writer, she is a very humble, patient, and pleasant human being. I enjoyed our brief conversation and her very informative presentation. I highly recommend her books. If I had a daughter she would be someone like Isabel Wilkerson❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I figured this was an "ideas" movie before I learned of the book. The white woman's line in the trailer "you're thesis if flawed," sold it to me because I wanted to see Isabel try to prove her point. I think the director in an interview said the word "race" or "racism" or even "institutional racism" has a lot of resistance or baggage so aren't moving us forward, but maybe "caste" can. One problem: it was really slow to start after they cut away from a young Black man in peril, who I didn't realize was Trayvon Martin until identified and revisited much later in the film. I saw it Tuesday, but it's leaving my theater after Wednesday (today).

The caste system has existed in some form in India for at least 3,000 years. It is a social hierarchy passed down through families, and it can dictate the professions a person can work in as well as aspects of their social lives, including whom they can marry.Jun 29, 2021

This comment is an example of what the movie is trying to portray... caste! It's all related, and all matters. No one's pain is greater than another's... it's interwoven... connected... and if we get to the root, that's when the real work starts. If we keep pitting against one another, then nothing changes.
