26:54 Johnson master is one of the greatest composers ever lived. Like MSV set a grammar for cine songs, Johnson is the one who set a grammar for re recording and silence was part of it. Some of his pieces are evergreen and so touchy. Although not classically trained, he has an extreme grasp of eastern and western music. I regard him as the most versatile musicians of 80’s and 90’s.

Well said! People have forgotten how the Tamil Film Music maintained a unique standard and thrived in the older days! It's very sad that nowadays, they create the melodies first, get the lyrics to suit it, and try to squeeze these "ready made songs" into the movies later! Like adjusting the body measurements to fit the clothes!!

You said something about Ilayaraja... Ilayaraja misused the Shehnai. If you say so, I would say he misused every musical instrument (in the right sense).

YES. It is WRONG INFO about IR just for the sake of highlighting another genius's prowess. I have given a few more examples of IR's shehnai use in everything other than sad tones.

Yes you are right..! But it would stand for the vastness of earth as it is long...that's the way to interpret .Context too is important... If one Nila Mugam to describe a beautiful face one should not ask if she has no eyes. Should apply the right aspect. Moreover if word painting is understood as always setting tunes Verbatim then it's no art...it would be predictable bland and mundane..!

IR DID NOT MISUSE "Shehnai". WRONG information. He has used it for DIFFERENT situations in his movies. IR has SEVERAL instruments to express "PAIN". Your knowledge about IR's music is VERY SHALLOW. PLEASE CHECK the FACTS before a presentation. Examples are given in the below comment. Edit: My comment on how IR used Shehnai to express ALL emotions, has been deleted! So much for truth / democracy. Perfect example: Ananda Raagam song in Panneer Pushpangal. Doordarshan used Shehnai to express sadness in obituaries.

If IR was just another average composer, MSV would not have worked with him for 3+ movies. MSV had his own ego too. Remember, IR himself approached MSV that he wanted to collaborate with him. MSV-TKR duo composed many songs together before parting ways, SO whom would you give the credit to and for what songs? You could have stuck to saying "MSV did this and that, he composed such and such" and so on. Instead, for some reason, you happily resorted to downgrading IR which I find abominable.

Do a research on MSV and then come and speak here. Talk to musicians he worked with since 1952 and check with them on who gave them the notes. It is right for a junior like IR to approach MSV and not vice versa. Ramesh stated facts about Ilaiyaraja who is a holy cow in Tamil idiot's minds.

@@akashpaul7455 Don't be an idiot! MSV is a stalwart but IR is daylights ahead when it comes to writing his music scores. Salil Chowdhury comes close to Ilayaraja in this aspect not MSV.

MANY songs that IR has used Shehnai for making HAPPY / Romantic / auspicious songs & BGMs. Examples: 1. Ananda Ragam song (shehnai interlude) 2. Hey Paadal ondru (interlude) 3. Madurai marikozhundu vaasam (interlude) 4. Manamagale marumagale (Devar magan song for a delicate auspicious situation) 5. Kuyile kuyile prelude (Aan paavam) 6. Some FOLK songs of his with Shehnai....He has ALSO used it for sad situations (like Mouna Ragam BGM).

Your comments on Ilayaraja seems misconceived. His choice of instruments, sound was legendary at the time and even now. You seem to be constantly commenting on his work to MSV’s. He took music to common man, unlike your so called legends. Keep your slanders in your own small group. Your obnoxious nasal voice, lazy composition was the only so called music expression in your mediocre work ever from your very short lived music direction stint. You should think about that!

Shenai is an instrument. How and in what context is used is something left to composures. In tamil this instrument has been used to represent pathos and despiration and consequently association has been established in the mind of the people. To say that it is foolish to associate only with sorrows and painful feeling betrayes only the foolishness of the speaker. To expect listeners to be composures is the foolishness at its worst.

You are cherry picking Ilayaraja's use of Shenai to denigrate him. In fact he was the one composer who radically departed from using musical instruments in the traditional monotonous way. This was attested by Flautist Napoleon in one of his interviews. Your comment is nothng but pure jealousy of your contemporary. Be objective in your comments.Don't bring in your prejudices to mask your failure to reach such heights. I will say you are using MSV to vent your failings. You need not have stooped to such levels. By the way I have as much respect and admiration for MSV as I have for Raja. So don't try to brand me

Looks like a knee jerk reaction. Traditional, monotonous way ? May we know what knowledge you have on the music that was made prior to Raja's entry !!! Raja was NOT Ramesh's contemporary, Ramesh was in the schools when Raja came in. RAja DID NOT change the style of instruments usage, infact he made it more conservative. The earlier composers have used combinations and thus "sounds" which cannot be reproduced by today's keyboards. Raja, honestly made Tamil Film music more "classicism" orientated, Western and Carnatic and became a theory chaser only because he knew he could never match the emotional throughput of the works of his predecessors. You talk about harmony friendly tunes of IR, MSV finished with it in the 50s. You talk about tri-part violin arrangement, MSV and GR did it in the 50s. Have you heard of sarangi and cello mixed together with a bi-part chorus. List one such so called different instruments usage by IR. IR did mention that he would change the way Shehnai would be used oblivious to the fact his great predecessor's usage of that instrument. Ramesh, is right, IR is a calculator but with more than ordinary talent but not the giant he is made to look like. Give that tag to MSV, CR Subburaman and G Ramanthan.

Many old songs, by MSV, Hemanth Kumar, etc., included shenai in a romantic or seductive way! Examples: எந்தன் உள்ளம் துள்ளி விளையாடுவதும் ஏனோ, தொட்டால் பூ மலரும், etc., etc., People without the knowledge of old songs attributed using shenai for non-sad melodies to IR. Sometimes, the way people talk they give the impression that music directors' role in Tamil movie music started only after IR!

இசைஞானியைப்பற்றி பேச என்ன அருகதை இருக்கு உனக்கு? MSV யின் பெருமை பற்றி மட்டும் பேசு. Don’t compare to praise about someone...you don’t have a basic sense of talking about a subject without interruption...
