I am glad the video could help. It is the only reason why I posted the entire 400. i think it gives you a clear vision of what is going on the last 400. any additional info you might need, let me know if I could help.

I really want to do the Mountaineers Route in the next couple of years. Always told myself I would be back to summit Mt Whitney again after hiking to the top back in 1998 on the last day of a backpacking trip. We started at Cottonwood Meadows and came around the West side, then out to the Portal.

Awesome. I'll be heading on that route Aug 11th. Haven't seen a great video of the decent of the final 400, so this was amazing! Contemplating doing the traverse down, but watching you didn't seem too bad. Just take your time.

Being my first time and solo, I too was concerned with descending final 400, took my time and analyzed each move as you've seen, at the end it wasn't bad. camera makes things look narrower and steeper too. Enjoy and be safe

Mark your exit to return to it, from the plateau and ready to descend all looks the same.

Thank you. Yes, the solo first timer thing had me nervous for few days. I went with the attitude of no expectation, see how far can I safely go and most important to enjoy the journey. Was great and opened the doors for more climbing for sure. Have the best luck in your climb.

Obviously a dry year. When I did it in late September 2006, the right side of the final 400 was covered in ice. I think I basically took your route. I was stumped at the last 8 ft. and could not find a way up, but managed to struggle up at 4 pm in the afternoon. Long hike down the main trail and reached the portal at 10 pm.

You finished it! that is what counts. Bet those last 3 miles of Main trail were painful

@@frankvaldivia2305 Not painful, just long. It was actually pleasant to take my time since I no longer had to race the sun. I occasionally would stop to turn off my flashlight and look at the night sky. Can't ever forget we are there for more than just bragging rights.
