MTA rolls out tap-to-pay OMNY system for several train stations, SI buses on Friday

The MTA is rolling out their new fare payment system called OMNY, or One Metro New York. Starting Friday, New York City commuters can participate in the tap and go system where riders can use their contactless credit, debit and reloadable prepaid cards to enter the subway or board buses.

It's funny how he says "Contactless card" like it's some futuristic technology. I live in Europe, contactless has been standard since 2011

i have had that kinda card for about the same time when other people didnt have it and saw me using it tap and pay was not really known back in 2011 i had also my google wallet and was already using tap and pay at mcdonals and other locations that had tap and pay way before apple

Why are you raising fares when you can't even get the trains on time ever. Every single day without fail there are horrendous delays. Fix the damn trains before you ask for anymore money. stop paying your incompetent employees six figures every year.

They are trying to update all of the signals, which would improve on-time, but then everybody complains when they want to close something down in order to do the work. You can't have it both ways.

in LA they had this fare payment system for a few years, their fare is only $ 1.75 but if you fare beat there it's a $250 fine

@@TheRailLeaguer There are many times when not only the card reader atop the turnstiles do not read the MetroCard stripes, some MetroCard Vendor Machines do not work right, either. Fortunately, I have nil to no problems dunking my MetroCard into the "kitty" or farebox in the bus. I do not like the laborious swiping of the MetroCard at the train station turnstile. As with the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), the farecards are dunked into the turnstiles.

Flash803 SQBZ No. the system will be phased in incrementally. The physical OMNY card will be rolled out in 2021 as a way to pay for your ride with cash.

Curry Chicken The cost of maintenance for this is much lower than MetroCards, since it’s an open-loop payment system, since it’s a “Bring your own payment” system (much like bring your own booze at certain bars). And the token is even more expensive than OMNY or MetroCards/
