Motovid.com Trackday at Blackhawk Farms Raceway on May 12th, 2021. Getting more confident, but having video is super humbling and useful because I can now compare this to competent riders to see where I'm losing time and where I can be a lot more brave. I'm in the yellow novice group on a 2001 blue Suzuki SV650S. Can't wait for the next one.
Still not sure if I'm impressed or embarrassed with my camera solution: i.imgur.com/o9...

For sure don't be bashful asking the CRs , that's what they are there for. I do think they love to help. Geavani helped me a lot! Have him follow you as well. Once you find that line you will shave seconds. Give yourself a goal each session, may be working on just one corner or one section. Get that right and then move to the next. Body position and vision are huge. Look through the corner. Target fixation is a killer at the track. Always look where you want to go never the negative no matter how wrong you think its going.

Thank you for the advice. I can definitely see how taking it piece-wise would be a wiser approach than trying to put it all together at once. I found that when I was focusing on my vision, something else would suffer like body position (as you mentioned). I guess that gives credence to the concept in Twist of the Wrist that you've only got $10 worth of attention, and everything is expensive when you're not conditioned/comfortable with it yet. So putting $7 in body position doesn't leave much left for braking points, turn in, vision, throttle smoothness, etc. All things I need to spend more of my hypothetical dollars on. Can't wait to get back, shake the bashfullness, and figure out the lines!

Jovani is his name. He's a good dude, and very helpful. I just became a CR this season. I'm sure I'll be in yellow sooner or later. I also ride an SV

@@JPRATT537 fantastic! I should have known how to spell his name... tsk tsk.. it's right on the white board! I came across your videos earlier today--I appreciate the uploads. Helps me see where I should be running and all the things I'm doing wrong. I thought it was an SV, but glad to see the confirmation. Quick question--can I ask what gearing you're running? I'm just trying to figure out how applicable the shift points are compared to my own. Looking forward to several more days with motovid this year.

@@matttriestodothings no problem man! And always open to questions. When I first got my sv it had 15/47 on it. Last season switched to 15/44, and this season I'm trying 15/45. Will probably be back.and forth between those two.

@@JPRATT537 Awesome, thank you. I stuck with stock 15/44 while I figure things out, but I may grab a 15/45 later in the year to see the difference. The part of the track I was most curious about what gear I should be in is 3A. In my KZfaq creepin' on motorcycle videos with "Blackhawk Farms" or "SV" in the title, I see you just got your race license. Congrats! That's pretty badass.

"i'm the one being held up" welcome to sv life lol. even in intermediate and advanced we trip over 600s all the time "not sure what gear i should be in, 2nd or 3rd" when in doubt run a gear up. svs pull fine in the midrange try the "4th gear no brakes" drill at some point and you'll see how much more speed you can carry everywhere most turns you're braking hours early for. on svs it's usually "dont touch the brakes till like the 2.5 board" (not etched in stone obviously, but the early brakers are prevalent in the lower groups) passing muppets the trick is to let them get ahead a bit and then get as much drive as you can off the corner. basically time it so you can carry speed through the corner and then rip them on the straight dont worry about splitting crs, they can get around you in a heartbeat

There's some very, very early braking going on--I know I can get in a lot deeper, but I had been backing off a bit thinking I need to figure out how to maintain more speed through 1. Second session out I caught a group of about 7 people going into turn 1 at a standstill and heard brakes squealing all over the place--in front of me and behind. I'll have to see if that was as scary on camera as it was in person. Glad you said go with 3rd gear. I think that's probably the right move, and it saves me a shift. In regards to passing, I'll work on backing up the corners a bit for a harder drive off. Guess which videos of yours is the next relevant one for me? Shock replacement, grrr... My Penske is leaking at the shaft, and I'm going to have it sent out for service. It'll likely be out for a while, so I'm going to learn what the stock shock feels like. Should be a decent learning experience though--hopefully give me a better appreciation for the Penske.

@@Mad8vCycles I don't have a choice! Well, I could purchase the $90 rebuild kit and give it a go myself; however, I don't know shocks very well, and I don't know where I could even have it re-pressurized with nitrogen even if I did rebuild it. I talked to Penske, and I'll either be sending it there after this weekend, or there's a place about 45 minutes from me that is a licensed dealer that may be able to do it quicker (3-4 weeks once at Penske). For $175, I'd rather know it was done right. If it was $375, I'd do it myself. Penske is 3-4 week wait right now once they receive it. Shit, I better call the other place right now before I forget..

I ride in the green group. I watched a couple of your laps. Your line needs some work. You are wide on just about every corner. Nowhere near the curbing. Just about all the corners are late apex at Blackhawk farms. Get behind a good coach like Geavani and follow his tire a bike length back. You'll get it.

Oh, there is a lot of work to be done, and I've been hunting around trying to figure out which lines are the ones I need to be running. I just finally have an overlay of some of my own video to compare to others I've been watching on youtube. It's one thing to see someone else's video, it's another to be able to compare it directly to your own experience. I've never ridden a motorcycle hard before (like, on a street or anytime), so just incrementally learning the limits of what tires are capable of. Well aware that I'm still far off from where I want to get to--signed up for several more sessions of novice this year already.

Ok I was on a 125 GP bike so I can’t help with gearing since I could hit 3 gears through the carousel turn three. I ran 1:19 race pace and 1:20 1:21 team challenge pace. After turn one you should be pegged no breaks till after the kink going into three. There’s a shit ton of time there for you. I have a video from up there I’ll have to see if I still have it so I can look at my lines. Fuck I miss that track. You even pit across from the short straight after the bus stop that I use to pit at. I raced there about 5 times a year for over ten years.

Gearing isn't my problem, just saddle time and comfort level. That's it. Oh, and the rear shock I need to have serviced because i noticed fluid on the shaft. I think the next day is going to be on the stock shock which should be interesting. It must pain you to see these laps with your background then, huh? Just turn it to 1.25-1.5x speed, and it'll look a lot better! I remember you mentioning you camped at BHF in the super cold. Anyone that camped there the previous night would have had a similar experience as it was frost covered in the morning. Turned into a pretty nice day before too long though, so quite lucky. Thanks for the advice about going into 3. I think I just needed someone else to say it. What did a 125 GP bike make? 40hp at 200lb or something totally ridiculous?

Forgot to add I rode a ninja 250 and was at just over a 1:30 lap which I think is still slow even for a 250.
@matttriestodothings
@matttriestodothings 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it depends on the setup of the 250 to an extent as well. I've seen what those R3, Ninja 4, and 390's can do out there, and I'm just amazed. I watched the video you posted of you following your son on the SV650, and it looks like he's running five laps between 1:29 and 1:31. I can see he's carrying one heck of a lot more speed into the carousel than I am which I think I just need to get more practice with. Not sure how hard you guys are pushing it there, but it's still super useful for me to watch it. Your other comment mentioned following a good coach like Jovani*, and I think you're absolutely right that I need to do that to learn where to actually be riding. I hadn't felt comfortable asking them yet until I got my sealegs about me. I need to actually do that next time instead of saying "next time".
