Can gently tap that first round opening near the filter? Then thread a short bolt in it to hold the safety wire?

Did you figure out where to safety wire the filter and drain plug?

Nope, haven't figured that out yet. I'm 95% certain I can poke a hole through what looks like it would be an oil port for an oil cooler, but I'm not touching a drill to the engine until I'm 100% certain. It's not necessary that I have anything safety-wired for novice... but I want to know how to do it. And, obviously, I'm hoping that one day it becomes a requirement for me. Safety wiring certainly seems like a skill that needs to be refined with practice, so I'd like to start learning it now. For how many thousands of SV650s have been wired up, I have no idea why it's this hard for me to find a picture of one. I'll just keep my eyes open at the track this year and hopefully see one in person, ugh.

I assume it's the same for a naked SV 650... is that right? Thanks.

Yep yep. I think the differences between the S and N are limited to different triple tree (offsets are different), clip-ons bs bars, fairings (and mounts), instrument gauge, and rear sprocket (15/44S 15/45N). There may be a few other ergonomic things, but the carburetor will be the same.

I have to balance my gsf600. Its a notoriously smooth motorcycle but seems a bit jumpy at low revs & thats not got anything to do with my riding

Luckily access is pretty straightforward on the GSF600. If you've never removed the vacuum caps on the brass nipples, you may want to have a few spares on hand. I've heard of people tearing them as the rubber ages. It probably won't be an issue, but if you're relying on being able to ride the bike immediately after, not bad to have on hand.
