Building a Commander deck from the ground up can be an exciting process, but it can also feel daunting for a player new to the format. This video will guide you through the process and hopefully help you as you construct your commander deck.
A few words before I begin:
*This is meant as guidance, not absolute rules. Hopefully the video will help you through the process by showing one possible way to construct a deck, but it is just that: one possible way of many.
*The deck I am about to construct is one I am building just for this video. I didn't already have it built, and I didn't just download another person's deck list. The final product is not being offered as the end all, be all, win fast and hard secret tech. It's the process on building this deck that I am highlighting, not the result.

+Tolarian Community College For extra card advantage and tap, you could do Azami lady of scrolls, since she isn't your commander in 3+ player games your not a huge threat, and the wizard subtype helps justify her and her fantastic ability. She may not be a merfolk but she sure is a wizard!

I really want to thank you very very much for those videos. I am relatively a new player. I have been playing commander for about a year. I used to get frustrated most of the time as my decks don't work. I keep reviewing them over and over and over again and they still don't work. I thought about quitting the format. After watching your videos, I amended most of my decks and built few new ones. Now my decks work really really well. Even though I don't use expensive cards or fancy lands, my decks work extremely well every single time. Commander now is my favorite format and I have 12 decks XD

Hey professor very helpful video the combination of this and the one you did with inalla, I originally bought inalla after reading about her on reddit then i watched your videos after i bought her deck and found out she really is the commander for me, once i got her i used your videos to personify my deck aka making it mine different from all the other Inalla's; in one of your next videos could you possibly go through your favorite counters throughout each format that would be much ablidged. Tolarian Community College tribal deserves coat of arms and door of destinies. I'd also recommend couple more sweepers in rout, cyclonic rift, and wrath of God. Otherwise, looks great! Let us know how it works. I always try to run at least three sweepers in all my Edh decks, seems to be the magic number for keeping you from being overrun.

slapping cards together the make a EDH deck is good! i used krenko, mob boss for a commander. slaped a ton of goblins and burn spells in the deck... add the land and BAM! OP deck

Thanks for the great educational videos and the great detail you go into reviewing every TCG product necessary. Sadly i didn't get acquainted with your channel prior to buying the ultra pro portfolios so i kinda shanked myself in the knee with that one...but you get what you deserve for not doing research. Could i just ask one piece of advice for EDH? For now i bought the "Eternal Bargain" Esper deck and got a ton of control cards i traded/got from a couple of booster boxes i bought,so i naturally thought of going a control heavy Esper EDH deck with multiple win conditions...sadly i didn't stumble into any good combos for that one. Could you help me bit here with that? Also,considering i got pretty much all slivers from m14 and after watching your sliver EDH deck tech i'm thinking of bringing that one to life aswell.

Nice video and arriving here a liiiittle bit late. I have a question: Does mana curve matters in commander when u are building your deck? I guess yes but not the same way that in standard, for instance

Well, the Video is nice. But it is up to the Builder him or herself to decide how many mana are to be used. For me for excample, I play everytime about 33 to 34 lands, where at least 5 lands are for both colors I play. If I play a 3 colored deck, then the numbers of basiclands I play is a bit more limited. Then I play artifacts, like you to fix the manabase, I already have. If would play heavyhitter, then ofcours I play more mana. For instance, my Phenax "You don't have soon no deck anymore"- Millcommander. I love Dimir Cluestone or others, If I play more than one color in my deck. At least, you're partly right, but as I said, how many mana someones play or better should play, depends on the deck-theme, the color variation and at least on the commander at all. But nice work so far. The other things you told, were totally right. That was the only thing I wanted you to point out :D... Keep up the good work :D

But I just notice, Prophet of Kruphix isn't a Legendary creature, so I can't use it in commander as it must be Legendary :'( Heh now that I think about I don't think you have mentioned this in your videos :P or I just missed it some how. Something that is really important for brewing EDH decks (or any deck, really) is to think on how your endgame looks like. I've built several decks considering strategy, synergies, etc., but without an idea of how your deck will be usually winning the game you'll end up with a deck that only durdles and will be grinded out most of the time. You should also try to have a plan B in case your winning strategy becomes unattainable. In this case the Professor highlighted the infinite turns lock but he might want to add some white anthem effects for beat down in case one of the pieces gets removed. Are you running a Mono Green big creatures deck? So maybe your endgame looks like casting Craterhoof Behemoth and Avenger of Zendikar, but you might want to add Helix Pinnacle in case you can generate huge amounts of mana (which in Mono Green you most likely will) so you can also win that way.

Thanks a lot. I already know that decks need synergy. I want to know some good ways to keep drawing lots of cards and get more land out than normal when not using green, because I keep getting beat due to these two factors on MTGO. I do see that taking lots of extra turns would get you more draws and land out, but how are you making sure that you draw the extra turn combos in the first place? Also, opponents will likely concede if you keeping countering and/or taking extra turns, at least on MTGO.

+Sims Dreamer Mana rocks are the typical accelerates outside of the generic "put lands into play" green spells. Mana doublers are unfortunately only in green, outside of Doubling Cube, which you can tap to double the mana you have in your pool. There are very few cards that put lands into play outside of green, none that I know of at least. There are plenty of draw effects. Blue Sun's Zenith (blue), Jace's Ingenuity(blue), Harmonize(green), Phyrexian Arena(black), etc. the list goes on.

I have many options for commanders to use: Rakdos lord of riots, obzedat ghost council, Iona shield of emeria, narset the enlightened one, varolz, and keranos... The only issue is I have a mono black EDH with many of my best cards

adapt your mana base to your decks needs. when adding lands think about the ratio of lands in your deck: what are the chances to draw a land; what are the chances to draw a specific colour of land; what are the chances to draw a non-land mana source; does this give me enough land to cast the non-land mana sources, and cast what i need? try to ensure you don't fully rely on mana sources that may be removed by opponents, but still allow your deck to really benefit from them. some decks can get away with 22lands, some need 50. be sure you have a a mana base that works for you, and dont be afraid to tinker with it, if it does not. you don't need expensive cards to have a working mana base, a little searching, synergy, and budget alternatives can go a long way in commander where games can last long enough for your dual land coming in tapped to not matter much. if your deck focuses on enter the battlefield triggers, then you may want to replace some lands with enter the battlefield effects that get mana for you. if your deck likes to recur creatures, then creatures that get mana on death, or enter the battlefield can work well. if you have a deck that focuses on amassing tokens, then tokens that can give mana are a good include. if your deck likes to untap creatures, then include creatures that can tap for mana.

i love your video as a starting point, but over the years you learn that 1: there are decks that dont need as many lands and 2: certin tribes are better than others i think the best deck to point at is sachi daughter of sashiro sachi is a trible commander just like sygg except that she is shamans over merfolk now shamens are a very interesting tribe as they have existed for much of magics history this has allowed shamans to accumulate many abilities and become a very diverse group they have become a sort of jack of all trades type of tribe, though this does have its downsides mainly that while there good or decent at most things they do not excel in one thing this is where sachi comes in, giving guidance for the restless shamans, becoming there leader by giving them a new focus which is createing and generateing mana the all powerful life force of the world and the multiverse so now the shamans who were once disorganized but powerful have become organized and powerful using there multitude of abilities to aid in the war effort of sachi

How do you start a "trade binder"? i ask this because i usually don't play in drafts i'm more of a constructed kind of player and so usually if i am trading the only cards i have of value are in my deck. so how do i go about getting a binder good enough to where i don't have to trade my deck for cards to build a deck?
