Maybe it's just because I'm waking up, but as cool as this combo is outside of that cool Selesnya deck my eyes are glazing over watching Rakdos deck after Rakdos deck.

There's something kinda surreal about Seth complaining about the one-deck meta while playing a janky version of that deck. I mean, it isn't Seth's fault - he was given a Rakdos combo to build around, and the Bankbuster/Harvester/Fable core of the deck are just so good at what they do that it's really hard to justify not running it if you're in those colors anyway. It doesn't help that the card he was asked to build around has a single obvious combo that fits neatly into that shell *anyway*. Seth, I'd personally be fine with it if you decided to stop doing regular Standard content and switched over to primarily recording Pioneer/Modern.

idk I played on ladder today and of the 10 matches I played I was one of 3 "rakdos" decks. the rest were callix mono red/black/white and I think one control deck. as much as I play now I really just rarely see enough of the so called problem decks as I see a huge mix playing the same lines every time. felt alot like grinding modern and I kinda love that

Just checked out the intro, am I missing something, or wouldn’t having Ob Captive+All Will Be One+Ob planeswalker mean that all you would have to do is “+1” the planeswalker then direct the All Will Be One damage to the opponent??? That would set off the combo without needing devils.

Love the combo, always super satisfying to see the triggers coming on At 3:18 you coud have attacked with the devil to trigger creature Ob, if you find the land you then play AWBO and uptick PW Ob for the win :)

I think the answer to Invoke Despair destroying the All Will Be One is a throwaway enchantment on the battlefield. I am thinking Bitter Reunion or Phyrexian Arena. Especially the latter might even draw regular enchantment removal.

Love Thermo-Alchemist with Ob. Had several situations of pinging to dig to find removal, play removal to untap therm, profit.

What to do about standard content? Do what CGB did, where he took some time off standard to focus on hbrawl. But with explorer or historic

I liked Amazonian's version of the combo better, but I liked the inclusion of blast zone to start off the combo and the usage of the vat that was pretty cool.

I think the best way to beat tier 1 decks like rakdos and grixis is to not think of the combo in isolation. I'm going to try a boros soldier splash black just to include Ob Kingpin and take advantage of all the white cards that put counters (Siege Veteran, Wedding Announcement, Intrepid Adversary, Wandering Emperor). It would also use some global removals, maybe one each, Farewell, Sunfall, Burn Down the House, to deal with too many creatures and an uncontrolled bord, and smaller End the Festivities removals. Maybe a Sheoldred or two to get some life. I imagine that this way we would have cards for the opponent to interact with removals and counterspells and by the time the combo happened, the table would already be more controlled. Another alternative is to just put All Will Be One and the Ob in rakdos! XD

I have a pinger deck with Obie as the commander and I am absolutely loving it. Especially when you pull out an all will be one and kill everyone XD

I think underworld dreams would be a good inclusion, dlconsidering the meta. It guarantees the 1 damage on opponents draw phase, and it gives you more options to either bait out invoke despair or at least give other options for sacrifice

Here are my suggestions for fixing Standard As a preliminary, the problem is the feeling that WotC is releasing too many sets, amd as a result is just grabbing cash. Greedy. Need to fix it. 1. Do releases in two or three-set blocks. Basically, design really BIG sets and put them out in two or three parts. Each block is a single world. This will make it at least feel like less sets are being released. 2. Stay in each world for a while. You can have release of sets within a block fairly close together, and a fairish gap in between. This will eliminate the feeling that WotC is just pushing sets out too fast. 3. Don’t rotate by date. Rotate by block. Consider having a projected rotation date for each block when it comes out. 4. Have a Standard Perpetual block. It doesn’t rotate, or doesn’t rotate at the same pace. Fill it with staples that are just a little too slow for Modern or Pioneer. 5. Make 30-card decks in the Standard Perpetual Format that can retail for $5. One rare, four uncommons. Only give them to stores with play spaces - NEVER for online sale. They are for stores to sell to beginners. These were formerly given out for free as promo material: the price tag is to give stores an incentive to run beginner events. 6. Have Block Constructed Events. Why? Because it is easier to balance a block against itself - it’s basically an expanded set. It is also easier to build decks from the more limited card pool. It is also possible to take a Block deck into Standard with minimal modification. 7. Try to not have more than three Blocks in Standard at a time. Consider rotating overpowered sets out early.

Would you be interested in trying out Standard Brawl for variety sake? I'm not sure how fun Brawl is, but I expect it to bet a lot more diversity from the extra year of Standard.

these are the types of combos that make players uninstall. like me. just saw it in gold 1 Bo1 standard. it would make sense in Historic or Brawl, but I suppose I didn't have enchantment destruction (my deck had 2 Static Net + 2 Disenchant) at the time, so instead of the usual punish, I just straight up lose the game without counter play. fun and interactive.

my favorite time to play standard was when innistrad and avacyn were in the block. those were fun. angel of serenity and thragtusk. before that i played bant chant with geist of saint traft. havent played standard since cause it feels like things have just gone stale

Anvil might be worth it with blood/treasure/sac itself synergies, but the rest of the artifact package felt like a trap. What if you replaced it with enchantments that synergize instead, to act as shields for your combo pieces vs. invoke despair? Kumano faces kakkazan, okkiba reckoner raid, curse of leeches and even the red go-shintai are enchantments/creatures that can also cause the opponent to lose 1 life at various points, meaning before setup they're a shield and after setup they're a trigger.

I don’t know if there’s much you can do against a stale meta. You can build against it, but that doesn’t stop you from having to see it every single match. You can switch to an adjacent format like Brawl or Alchemy but that’s just running away from the problem.

The standard change means that we are either getting a super boring format which is already solved, or that the upcoming sets are so pushed that the rotation will be forced through power creep. None of those two options sounds like something to look for =(. Regarding your content, I think explorer and pioneer are a nice place to explore. It seems to me that there is some fun to be had there

this was obviously recorded before the bnr announcment, but I'd say that for when standard gets stagnant like this, you can probably get away with 3 of the 5 matches being the same deck. If you can't get two different decks for the last two matches, upload a 4 match video with 3 of them being the same matchup, and if you can't get any, then just post 4 of the same matchup.

I made a mono red pure artifact deck that's called "f*uck go for the Throat". That's my way to get back at standard. It kind of works

i'm curious how arena handles infinite combos that are auto-triggered/forced to resolve like this one in an unwinnable situation. like, say this combo starts on someone with the book of exalted deeds on a faceless haven. since the top card is exiled instead of drawn, does that prevent the Ob player losing by not actually drawing the top card? if so, do we actually create something arena is actually forced to repeat until a player concedes?

I don’t care about it being the same match up. Every format has the most popular deck, at least standard is fun for me, and as a not super enfranchised player who doesn’t play more than once a week, it’s mostly noise hearing about standard right now.

In the ban discussion, I honestly think invoke despair is the card that needs to be banned, not fable. I wouldn’t be upset to see fable go by any means, but invoke gives black a payoff to deal with enchantments which they should have difficulty with and is always a 1 for 3 in any situation. Its just too consistent a payoff with such good mana fixing in standard to make the 4 black pips not really matter.

Re: a single deck meta - we just need to brew a meta-breaker. Spend a stream figuring out what works well against each part and how to efficiently mix the solutions into a deck. Maybe I'm overly optimistic but there's got to be a route to defeating it right?

For standard videos, maybe create an artificial meta by playing two jank decks against each other, you & crim or phil. house ban fable and/or sheoldred / invoke. there are cool things to be done buried under the rakdos menace.

stopped playing standard a couple months ago. It just doesn’t feel good or fun anymore. R&D also needs to really rethink their processes in regards to evaluating their own cards…B/R/x piles shouldn’t be so unbalanced if they knew how to properly evaluate power level
