It’s great to see someone repair, rebuild, refurbish, and reuse. I think that’s one reason your channel is so interesting. The object you’re working on may not be one I’d ever find myself using, but it’s good to be reminded that things can be torn down and reworked, with patience.

Doing repairs like that on oil impregnated Aluminum are always fun. ALmost have to weld it twice. Once to cook all the gunk out, grind it back, weld it again and the second time always goes better. Plus it's hotter by then. That TIG torch you were using had a gas lens on it rather than the old basic ceramic cups. I expect you could have pulled that tungsten way farther out than you did and not lose argon coverage. That's kind of the idea behind the mess in there. Gives a lot of laminar flow that allows you to stick way out where it's easy to see and easy to maneuver.

Forget "Ernie, The Fastest Milkman In The West", it's Al, the Nascar Forklift Racer lol. Sorry, it's just that I've used a lot of different forklifts over the years and that sudden speed up of the video at about 2 mins sorta freaked me out for half a second till I realized it was sped up. I know just how snappy and unstable they can feel at speed if you aren't careful on the rear steering lol. The biggest one I've ever used had come from the docks and was used to move shipping containers around. I used it to pluck the cab off a wrecked semi after unbolting everything else (AKA mostly with an oxy cutting torch) but the cab was kinda mangled so didn't want to but, stick 1 of those giant forks through 1 window and out the other and it effortlessly tore it off. We had no use for the cab but all the running gear was still useful, chassis rails and all for extending other trucks etc. Geez Al, even if that engine was stuffed, it would easily be worth spending the money on a new one if you couldn't easily get a good second hand one. A mixer like that's worth it's weight in gold.

Great Content as always! I worked for a Honda distributor at one time. I had a customer that had an issue with blocks cracking in the same area and what they did was tig the outside and then laid a thin aluminum rod on the inside and did a tig weld on the inside as well. I think your fix should work great though. Also the other shaft on the inside that you said moved some is a counterbalance shaft to keep the motor from shaking itself to pieces lol

Alan, get a new 1/4 inch straight plate and weld it leveled to the old base and drill new mounting holes. That should solve your problem of the warped base. Drill the holes such a way so you can account for a shorter distance for the chain. Can't wait to see the mixer running.

That cast aluminum, is often mixed with random white metal casting when the mix the alloy, anything to save some money when they make it! .. It's still plenty good enough for a small engine block! .. BUT, makes welding it VERY difficult!! with all the impurities! I think withe JB on it should hold oil!!

It will run, the only question is how long it will run. If the weld and JB weld holds and the oil stays inside the motor it will run for years. If it cracks and the oil leaks or runs out then not so long (10-15 minutes once dry, till it gets hot and the motor seizes). It has always amazed me how long a dry motor can run. The older the motor the longer it will run without oil has been my experience because bearings and rings are looser. I tried to blow a '40 chevy motor once by running it dry and it ran (idled) for about 45 minutes. Why did I want to blow it? My dad told me I couldn't put in the new motor I bought for it until the old motor died. Turns out it died the very next day!

Make sure to check the bottom of the engine with a square to make sure it is level/even/square after welding. You don't want to bolt it to a flat piece of steel until you do that because if the bottom of the case ain't square you will crack it again by bolting to a square piece of steel, and welding after using JB Weld won't work.
