I had a great time watching this, MtPain! I’m really glad you liked the wads, and I completely understand the (relatively few) criticisms. Hopefully Ray Mohawk 2 will end up as a fun “spiritual sequel” to Rowdy Rudy once it’s complete..! (Also, Dr Strangelove.. Strangelove MIDI.. don’t think I’m not onto you, sir 😛)

I'm so proud to have made the Dean's honor roll! This wad was a ton of fun to work on thanks to Doomkid's awesome DeHackEd work, as well as the top-notch energy of the rest of the team. Lots of cool levels in this wad that make you feel like a Schwarzenegger-type action hero. And I must confess, your quick switching skills are sick man.

9:28 It just hit me the midi in the background is Zappa's Inca Roads. If this mad lad actually made a midi version of that song, he has my immediate respect. That song is technically difficult for every instrument involved, so i can't imagine how tedious it was to arrange it in midi.

I was wondering if you'd have any interest in doing episodes on some more experimental wads, despite your preference for more vanilla-styled doom content. Doomkid is as kind as he is talented, and he fully deserves recognition for his contributions to Dooming. Another great video! I saw you mention an upcoming episode on Struggle: Antaresian Legacy on Doomworld and I can't express enough my excitement for it. That wad is superb, for sure one of my absolute favorites.

I think you’re right about In The Thick Of It being the old MAP02, Doomkid says in an RR2 video “I’m going to skip my 2 maps at the beginning here and go right to MAP03” which also happens to be The Hydrocore

Glad you're back! I haven't played the first Rowdy Rudy (so I probably should), but I did play the sequel right after I saw it won a Cacoward, and it was pretty awesome. I absolutely love the changes to the arsenal for the most part. Melee combat is actually really fun and viable, especially after getting a berserk. The auto shotgun is super fun. The BFG felt a little weird to me, like I wasn't able to get the timing down right for a bit, so my typical pattern of 2-shoting cybies was thrown off. When it comes to the levels, I feel like our opinions are pretty much the same. Map 12 was my favorite as well, and Map 16 definitely annoyed me as it felt like I was just wandering around trying to figure out where to go. That final level was definitely a let down too, cause when I got to the end and the WAD just ended, I was like "Really, that was it?" I'm glad we had the 2 bonus levels cause those where a much better way to end it. The fact that the main WAD is vanilla is so surprising since these levels are pretty nice looking and detailed. Doomkid and crew did good! Hopefully Ray Mohawk 2 will be just as solid!

Rowdy Rudy 2 was one of my favorite wads of 2020, and I'm glad to see it represented it here. I had a blast, even with the more 'inferior' levels. It feels like someone trying to replicate the look and feel of Duke Nukem 3D while also respecting the limitations and key characteristics of the Doom engine, making these wads look more like a "Doom 2" than Doom 2 itself ever tried to be. A natural progression from vanilla Doom. I loved every second of it.

I’m impressed how uniform Doomkid’s music choices are, I thought he composed most of the Rowdy Rudy’s Revenge soundtrack himself at first!

I downloaded Rudy 2 today and now I understand why it's called Powertrip - it's such a gung-ho, action-movie power fantasy! I just finished BTSX2 and have been playing Ancient Aliens recently and am really digging how Rudy 2 is a lot less fiendish than those megawads - it's nice just to be able to tear through enemies with super-powerful weapons for a bit of recreation. Thanks for making this video - I'm following both you and Decino's videos as waypoints for new megawads for me to play and this one hasn't disappointed thus far.

I love mods with weapon and enemy replacements, really makes it feel like you're playing a new game.

Welcome back, Mount! I hope you were able to sort out what kept you without any problems. I'm excited to see what this season brings! If you're still looking for wads to play, I'd recommend things such as Epic 2 by Eternal and Struggle by antares031, one of the mappers for Eviternity. Also, are you going to cover Heretic (and/or Hexen) one day? EDIT: Just done watching the episode, these wads are very cool and interesting! Looks very enjoyable to play too and your commentary shows! PS: For the second wad, I'd recommend to use GZDoom's hardware acceleration, as some of the later maps are more graphically demanding. There are tricks to make GZDoom look like ZDoom without losing hardware acceleration if you prefer its aesthetics.

It was pleasure for me to test this wad as well as build TAS movies. It really pushes vanilla to the limit. Some good maps were either cut down or removed to match vanilla compatibility. I remember, Aurelius had to remove some frames in order to implement fast weapon switching and Doomkid had to hotfix some maps. That was in pre-release times. Rowdy 2 came out in time for me! Nowadays I'm not as proactive as before because of my full-time job.

I was trying to think of which WAD you might be reviewing next for the last couple of weeks, and I'm glad that you chose something completely out of left field from what I was thinking.

Yes! New Dean of Doom Episode. I always consult this series to figure out what wads I'd like to play, because idgames is just an ocean of content. Also the Chaingun graphics are from Freedoom, but I can't blame you for making that mistake because it's clearly what whoever drew it was going for. Also never expected to hear F-Zero music in a Doom wad (RR2 Map 19) it's Deathwind from the SNES game btw.

not sure if you noticed but the melee attacks in both wads deal damage twice in one hit, which is why it's so much more powerful

Great to have you back, Pain! And with an interesting duology which, played back to back, constitutes a full megawad. Doomkid's a rad guy, a talented modder, and a Frank Zappa fan, so I'm glad to see Rowdy Rudy getting exposure. And when Ray Mohawk 2 is finished, I'm eager to see what's said about those wads. The weaponry in RM2 is even MORE ridiculous than RR2 if you can believe it, haha. Anyway, it's a shame RR2 ends on a flat note (and I often take umbrage to Revenant abuse), but otherwise, I've got to get around to playing these in full someday. Keep up the great work, as always!

Always a treat when you upload! This wad looks fun, I like the custom content and those copyright dodging midis are dope. Been playing Base Ganymede by Khorus, I was wondering if you've checked it out. It feels like the Doom 1 version of Final Doom. Solid quality all the way through. Also, Khorus' single map wad Warlock's Hearth is a great time and very aesthetically pleasing. Off-topic, I know, but I figured I'd drop a couple recommendations since I've mostly played wads recommended by you up to this point.

Wasn't expecting master of puppets to be the last level's theme, though if ya ask me, i'd have maybe slotted trapped under ice. I thought the accidental reading of "swagmaster 420" was way funnier than it should have been. Well done swagmaster 420.

Hey MTPain, just checking in. Haven't watched any of S2 yet as it became a tradition to watch during my friday college breakfast, but once I get back I'll binge em. Also, either of the "Doom: The Way ID Did" mapsets are really good, and somehow took Doom 2's level aesthetic and made it look good.
