I"m from Thailand. The Arm Band we call "Pra Jiad" is a type of armband worn by Muay Thai athletes. In the past, their use was to give confidence and luck to the athletes, and was usually made by the fighter's close family member (mother, father, etc.). Some fighters wear one Pra Jiad, some wear two. Some schools also use color-coded pra jiads to show rank, similar to belts in karate. Today, some gyms will give Pra Jiad to their athletes to boost their confidence. Traditionally, pra jiads were kept in high or well revered places, as it was thought that if someone stepped over it, or dropped it, it would lose its mystical power. Origin of the Pra Jiad The origin of the Pra Jiad has close association with warriors going into the battlefield. In the past, Thai warriors would be given a piece of their mother’s clothing before leaving their home for battles. They tied the pieces of clothing around their arms to bring them good luck in battle so that they would return home safely.

If you ever have the privilege, go to Thailand and train, they teach you the belt is in the ring. Like you need to fight for it and its for champions. Not for symbolising how many hours you have spent in one specific dudes company. Its a true meritocracy.

@@DevilsAvocado69 also thais fight to survive, they live and breathe it, the dont need encouragement to progress in skill and have consistency , westerners lack this as there lives are very different to that of thais, having a ranking system gives goals for students to strive for, it keeps them showing up and pushing....if not for adults then amazing for kids, a sense of achievement does wonders not just for kids but does wonders to and human mind...giving money back to the village for a thai kid or to there mum installs a sense of pride and achievement..do kids in the western world have to do this? @@hokimoki3677 Lmao, you need to stop getting your western facts from cereal boxes. Many children in the west work, they often deliver heavy bags of news papers or work in family business. Acting like western poverty doesn't exist is just insulting. You are an ignorant person and your life would be better if you educated your self rather than holding hardship as a badge of honor. What you don't seem to understand is Thailand isn't that poor a country compared to other Asian countries, so yeah your life if your parents are not educated may be difficult but that's their fault, not the west. You come across as ignorant. EDIT: THAILAND has South East Asia's second largest economy and has a poverty line under %10 facts. Your life isn't that hard. Get over it.

@@DevilsAvocado69 i can agree, what has kept muay thai traditional and not gentrified like karate or taekwondo is how they measure experience. Its based off your record in the ring. True muay thai legends have crossed that 100+ fight threshold. Thats what makes a fighter. But i can see the benefits of having a "belt system" some people want to feel there progression but some arent crazy enough to get in the ring. So i can see that. But thailand is different, these fighters start from children and do this everyday, because in a way, this is there career, their future job, this is how they put food on the table.

@sl4tra
@sl4tra 2 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't call it a hoax. Americans know nothing about the history behind it so they need a way to track their progress. As you know prajiouds and mongkhons are not to track a level of understanding of the martial art, but rather for good luck, I'd argue they're more for tradition nowadays but still, yet since Americans are used to the belt system in bullshit sports like karate or taekwondo it's easier for them to understand it. Though i wish they didn't change it because i think it's really beautiful that everyone is on the same level and the only thing that makes you better than someone else is your own ability

I can see why people would complain about this, but I think like with most martial arts it’s more up to the teacher. I think the idea of ranks is good to show progress, but it could be dangerous to hand them out to people without earning them. I mean to argue pro belt, bjj has a belt system and is highly a regarded practical martial art
@earlenglish4674

In my opinion adding a ranking system is a great concept for several reasons. The ranking system would make students strive to get to the next level, thus making them study the correct technique instead of going through the motions. The student would also have to master the basics before moving onto more advanced techniques that would come with the next rank. The ranking system would also teach students that efficiency comes with time and hard work. If the ranking system was utilized in a legitimate school and not a mcdojo, then the Black prajioud would have been earned from mastering all aspects of Muay Thai and knowing the history behind Muay Thai. Now days people take a month or two of Muay Thai classes and they ussally say I know Muay Thai lol in reality they haven't even mastered the basics.

Yea forreal the different belt color rankings indicate that you’ve achieved a certain amount of overall understanding of the art.. it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be a champion to have a black belt of understanding because you can be 60 and fully understand Muay Thai to a grandmaster level but it’s not like your gonna go fight and win championships at 60 lol, it’s good to have these belt rankings to show levels of understanding and then if people want to learn they can get a better idea of who is teaching them based on rank they’ve achieved and who they trained under etc I think it’s a great idea to have belt ranks as long as they are setup properly

I understand implementing a ranking system for the U.S. cause for some reason most people have to have proof of progress to stay motivated. However, to use some sacred items like a Mongkol or a Pra Jiad is disrespectful to the culture. Give your students a t-shirt that is color coded or something that does not steal from the true tradition and culture of Thailand and Muay Thai.

Muay Thai does have a belt system, but this one doesn’t look correct. Every master from Thailand can be from a gym that has its own belts and standards. Lots of gyms out here don’t do it. Not sure why not. It’s more motivation for the students. But at the same time, a majority of people drop out of martial arts, and some folks don’t stay in good enough shape to pass the testing that is required. My old gym didn’t do belts consistently but the master was born and raised in Thailand and he was a world champ. He has the belt system with real belts up on the wall. They looked much different than these and they didn’t require rubber bands.

Ok so i get there are no bands in thai boxing...... But alot of traditional karate schools that also have kickboxing such as kyokushin an isshinryu have taken the forms and traditional an even the gi out an go through all the necessary legitimacy requirements, an offer just kickboxing an replaced the belt ranking system with bands or even the shorts... This doesnt mean there fake just adapting with the times not everyone wants to learn katas and forms ect they just wanna learn the combat aspest an to be honest I feel like the band or shorts ranking system gives ppl a sense of accomplishment
