Make sure you do some rounds of sparring with him. Not at 100%, just some technical sparring, it's one thing to throw combinations at a punching bag and another to throw them at another person, at least until he gets used to it. If he doesn't spar, the moment he has to fight he'll blank out and not remember anything from training. Good luck to you and him!

This is such a great video. I've been sending this link to my students any time I sign up a new member for our group classes. This video re-enforces what I've already covered with them in their introductory training session with me, and helps them feel more comfortable and confident as they come into our regular group member classes. This is just a no-nonsense yet thorough orientation video done in the right length of time, and makes a great tool for me as a teacher. Great work, and thanks Shane!

Thanks for this. I've been learning from you since 5 years ago from boxing and now Muay Thai. I will never forget your best boxing technique which is the spartan shove, I was able to use that multiple times and it works. Now, I switched to Muay Thai and found out that I have a lot of things to correct, and one of them is my basic knee strikes, the instructor that's been teaching me didn't bother to correct my form, I've been doing knee strikes and then switching to other legs, I just found out that my knee strikes will be more effective if I spear it forward, supporting my lead leg, without changing stance. Thank you for this. Keep this up sir, you've been very helpful.

Great video, it’s actually so hard to unlearn a technique i.e boxing and introduce new techniques such as Muay Thai. He did really well and the coaching was brilliant 👏🏼

Thank you for reminder of respect. 🙇Getting back into Muay Thai after many years away. Mostly for rest days from climbing, but discovered my daughter loves the basic training with father/daughter time. Installed heavy bag this week & got her youth gloves/spar pads. Looking forward to many fun times.🤘

This video is awasome, I'm not really interested in muay Tai but I really enjoy this format, I even throw a few kicks around. Please, it would be great if you do this kind of video for boxing and such. Keep it up! (sorry my English)

I think it's also good to grab under elbow in neutral clinch position so you can knee to the ribs without letting opponent pull arm back to block it

This is a great video for preparing beginners for what to expect in class; and also you shouldnt be scared or nervous about sparring, at all; doing it repeatedly like all things makes it easy and you are relaxed while fighting, plus you have headgear and mouthpiece on and you both are wearing gloves and shinguards, you cant get hurt that bad - or at all if you keep your guard up like you train to and throwing back and not being a sitting target - or one without defense, your high tight guard will make your head pretty much invulnerable to incoming strikes - but your body can be targeted much more than usual, so use a balance between the two, I personally keep my hands at cheek level just below my eyes, with my rear hand resting on my cheek right below my eye, and my lead hand only slightly, if at all, foreward to open a gap so I can see, I like having a tight guard at all times for defense and also cause it loads up BOTH your arms for powerful punches. Take advantage of openings though. And in sparring you usually only go at between 50 and 70% of your max intensity, and the higher percentage only very briefly for one strike or so. You dont wanna cause injury and also that intensity is already enough to accurately simulate and fight and make you NOT want to get hit, protective gear or not, it makes you keep your guard up and defense tight. Harder than that is unnecessary and leads to damage without gain. Also get used to taking hits to the head without freaking out like some beginners do, they either shell up or go ham and swing haymakers(which only leads to them getting tagged with even more, and harder, punches due to how open they are and the other guy matching his aggression level as we do in sparring); its best to stay calm at all times esp during sparring and you will learn that, anybody who joins Muay Thai. You'll eventually get used to the footwork too and the weight transfers and the balancing and so on, that takes much time though, and start out slow with your footwork be as technical and precise as possible till you can do it quickly; same with all your attacks too, and your DEFENSE too even your high guard/covering up you need to practice that both in shadow boxing imaging an opponent shelling up after throwing some hits be they punches or kicks or doing slight head movement(and never dropping your guard), and with a partner in drills in class which you will also be doing, as well as in sparring of course. I wish I had something like this when I was starting out lol(I was very nervous on my first day of jiu jitsu when I was starting out in martial arts, then a year after that I started Muay Thai, was far less nervous, but I was very nervous starting out in BJJ and still remember the feeling; not good, and I know for a fact it holds back many people from joining, the fear of looking foolish - everyone looks like a beginner when they are starting out and I did too and its ok, nobodies gonna judge you for it, dont let it stop you joining a muay thai gum.. Still alls well as ends well, I love Muay Thai and I like it that more people seem to be seeing the value of it and getting into it these days.

Great video! I try to train my students to 'look down the shoulder' when they kick (other than low kicks) to help them turn their hips over and actually hit with their shins rather than the inside of their legs. You're a great trainer and give slow, easy to understand advice.
