Much Abrew: Three-Drop Stompy (Modern)

This week, we're heading to Modern for a deck that's playing literally all of the three-drops: the aptly named Three-Drop Stompy. The deck is actually very simple: it's all fast mana and three-drops, along with Collected Company to get two three-drops. Ideally, we'll play three-drops from Turns 1 through 3; then, we just cross our fingers and hope that our powerful three-drops are good enough to win the game. The big question is whether our three-drops are powerful enough to make up for the fact that our deck is overloaded with rituals that are great when we are are casting a Goblin Rabblemaster on Turn 1 but less great when we are drawing them off the top in the mid- to late game. Is the deck's raw power and speed enough to overcome this inherent inconsistency? Let's get to the video and find out; then, we'll talk a bit about the deck!

THE DREAM. THE TURN ONE COCO DREAM. I am shocked that this deck actually works as well as it does. Honestly I do think the deck should have like, a faithless looting or something to ditch Chancellors and draw action, or potentially even cutting all but one Chancellor for something else (just cuz I think this deck kinda wants Spirit Guide copy 5?) But this seems ungodly fun to play on something like MTGO, where no-one will see it coming. So silly. So, so silly.

I was thinking add some amount of blood raid because theres so much power at 3, which is what it'll normally hit, or a ritual to let you play another 3 from your hand. I think it would be good over chancellor at least.

Seth Chapman it needs a lot of work. I don't play legacy, but this probably scoops to a chalice on 1, or a T1 FOW. Besides, I only have half a sideboard

I wonder if Ponza's supposed to be a chalice on one matchup? It blanks Utopia Sprawl, Arbor Elf, Birds of Paradise, and Lightning Bolt, so it gives them way fewer ways to interact and gets rid of almost all of their mana acceleration.

Alex White yeah good point. From what I saw seems like deck has an unbalanced sideboard plan as well. I don’t personally like decks where it’s not so clear cut of what to put in and take out

Mitchell Boyd I think vs Ponca it’s -4 magus because they have a lot of basics, +4 chalice, -2 collected company because you’re boarding out a bunch of creatures for non-creatures, and +2 chainwhirler

Why not play bloodbraid elf? It gives you a 3 drop or a free ritual to cast another 3 drop... More or less good as coco

This deck looks like my kind of thing! I would have an ahn-crop crasher or a deathgorge scavenger in there, but this deck is unspeakably sweet as is.

Question against the ponza deck, wouldn’t chalice be a consideration seeing as it turns off so many of their cards? Bolt, birds, arbor elf, utopia sprawl?

i used to run a mono red eldrazi deck in the alst eldrazi standard. it was janky and fun and i was able to turbo flip hanweir as early as t3 which was fun.

This is such a fun deck to watch do its thing. With those changes, it could be more solid. It reminds me a bit of Free Win Red, though Free Win Red is stronger.

MTGGoldfish could try 4 bbe and 4 bolt then you have some form of removal or even to the face if struggling to get dmg through, I do like the deck very much but maybe these changes could add more consistenty

Toss up IMO. Do u play to stop one 4-of or try to be as fast as possible. Seth opted to do the latter. As you saw he did think bout it and highlighted the chalice but didn’t bring them in

8:02 finks is a good threat, weak to path, but great against wrath, also chancellor seems awful against control because you don't really need to go fast, and the card itself does nothing.

In addition - couldn't you just cut green entirely (despite the value you get from Collected Company) and add in stuff like Rampaging Ferocidon, and maindeck those Chainwhirlers and Chalices?

In Match 3, you could’ve brought in Chalice against their cheap draw spells, at least slow them down. At least you had an option over the Chancellor.

To be honest I think sideboarding out the chancellors is a mistake. The deck seems to play out much better with them in. Its a bit risky, but I think having some dead drops is worth it.

I idslike lannery and rishkar in the deck, I'd much rather have 4 bolts to keep blockers out of the way and give you some reach. I also don't know if 8 rituals and 4 chancellors is good, that's a lot of air in your deck, maybe try out some mana dorks instead of the chancellors? 4 Tireless Tracker in a deck so reliant on explossive starts is janky as well, I wouldn't play more than 3, why not try out some spicy 2 drops like burning tree emissary?

I don’t really understand why this deck has blood moon in sideboard when it’s already running 4 magus in the main. It really feels like those spaces should be used for like some graveyard hate or more ways to interact with creatures.

I would cut Chanceller for Bolt, 4 rituals for birds(don't know about hierach, cant make red->chainwhirler doesnt like that) and put some grave hate in the sideboard.

I'm struggling to see what this deck does well that 8 whack doesn't do better. You're casting more expensive stuff more quickly, but... that's really just an excuse to generate card disadvantage. The chalice flexibility is a straight sideboard advantage, I guess.

Bolt is way better than the giant green drop imo, to a point where you lost games because you didn't have it... Having one less mana t1 is a fine trade off for removal and fewer bad topdecks.

Why do you flash the cards in the tech section on the screen faster than we can read them? I mean, it's a 50 minute video, you can take a little more time showing what the deck actually is and less time playing it.

This video IS the deck tech. If your video requires the viewer to pause it in order to understand what's being conveyed, then it's a poor video. Period. Maybe you watch these videos to see an average player play against randoms on the internet, but not everyone does. Some people tune in to see a new deck, learn what it is, and see its interactions. Since it's already a 50 minute video, he could have taken an extra 2 minutes to show and explain the deck before he launched into playing a deck that I don't really understand because he rushed through explaining it as fast as he fucking could.
