Watching his matches were not just watching a boxing match, it was watching Ali in the ring. No other athelete has the level of charisma Ali did. Person of the century!
@donofon101410 ай бұрын
You are referring to the King of Clinching... I have rewatched his abuse of the holding rules. Referees exist to haul Ali;s arm from off of his opponents neck and head. It is sooooo repeated. He Groomed the American public for boastful arrogance as a feature of greatness. Inheritor... : YOU ARE FIRED: becomes president.

i have to ask .. did you write this after watching THIS match.?? That way I can assess your judgement. This is the 4th Bum of the Month Club fight I have watched in a row where a house full of Ali fans are booing him by round 5. Endless clutching.. Howard Cossell ..who I am no fan of was so right in his commentary. A DISGRACE. I wish I could send you a transcript of the words yelled by the referee. If I were you.. and I am not.. I wold copy and paste that comment and attach to a fight worthy of Ali. Meanwhile he damaged the whole idea of sportsmanship by his arrogant clowning and ignoring the holding rule at will. He revived a fading sport but left it as damaged as his brain cells. i loved Ali's stance and comments about Viet Nam.. his refusal. But he joined the corrupt Nation of Islam ... a cult not a religion in that era. X left to become a real Muslim . I would have liked to see him join the Panthers and use some funds for the meals and tutoring work. I hate HYPE... and your comment is 100 per cent hype. MAGA folks will remember Trump that way. Charisma is not the point of any athletic event.. unless you are selling audience share, endorsements and shilling for a growing Cable VU money trough. Please watch this fight for the first time.... or again.. if you did. Listen and watch. Anyway as a copywriter for hype nonsense.. you got it.

This is the 4th fight of this era where he is booed.. and wins a closer decision than he deserved in the Bum of the Month Club. The collected words of the referee in this fight say it all. GET OFF OF HIM.. Stop Holding,..Get your arm off there.,. eventually the refs just pull his arm off. Genius at work. He DID NOT entertain in this era of his career. Ali was only 35 here and whilst a fighter of that age is in decline, they should still have plenty left. At this stage Ali was doing the things that Ali did, but badly. The snap had gone from his punches. A year later we would hear the slurred speech. From 76 he wasnt the same fighter and likely affected by the onset of parkinsons. The greatest heavyweight of all time should have retired after the 3rd Frazier fight
@maciekjoker9095 Жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right. You have to consider that Ali took fights because he was making millions of dollars for each fight. But unfortunately, he paid for it with his health, and very much so. In my opinion, he should retire after the Foreman fight or the third fight with Frazier at the latest.

I was a huge Ali fan, and a very young man in the 1970's. As the decade progressed, i watched him fighting a bunch of no names and going the distance with them. I remember watching those fights and thinking 'he is just toying with them...he wants them to get their 10 minutes of fame..he will turn it on in the late rounds and knock them out'. But he didn't. I realized he really was in decline, and was not the man he was 10 years ago. And he clearly stayed in the game too long, getting brain damage in the end.

@burtonaka...9 ай бұрын
A masterpiece... And his instrument was a guy with scarcely 10 fights who never defeated an opponent of skill with any talent or attribute one one expect of someone of a " championship caliber " Name one fight that Leon Spinks showed that he was in a master class as a boxer. Even the debacle in which Ali fought Holmes, there wasn't even a hint or moment of ability. The only ability through the years, was predicated on receiving an exorbitant amount of coverage like any other media-fueled figure between then and now: making the event and participants something other than human beings. It's the rabble off to the side throwing all the non-existent accolades, virtues and adjectives in.
@burtonaka...9 ай бұрын
The epitome of modern prizefighting and this fighting: toying with him, sport, a game, a joke. Not world-class or caliber but he can step off a plane and box anyone, anywhere. What does the average fan, even Cosell, really know about boxing? Are they going to tell you a boxer is carrying another guy or pulling their punches? No, instead, even when the guy takes a dive, they re going to be screaming hyping you up, even though it's obviously faked. People liked to be fooled, it is said. That's why people will watch a magician, sit through needless advertisements, watch guys run around in leotards in a similar ring in a very similar sport and pretend to hate each other. That's called a sport AND a business. How did the 2 get incurable mixed together?
@burtonaka...9 ай бұрын
The difference between a pulled punches and a real one is the follow-through and the target. See the punches here and the follow-through...pawing. Then watch his fight against Earnie Shavers. Oh...that's what a real punch and impact looks like. Also, you can hear it. You also can tell when a guy like Ali is sitting there talking his mess after, say, the Foreman fight-and he's barely marked. You re gonna tell me Foreman followed through on all those misses and Ali " somehow withstood the barrage ". It was more like, " make sure you loosen those ropes so when he pulls his punches..." it's too obvious but people don't have to have a degree to understand physics. Even your eyes and especially, ears are aids, too.

why Howard called fights past 75 is beyond me. he thought way more of his own opinion than the viewers. watch the last year's of his fight coverage and see the delusion he had of his contribution to boxing. if a match wasn't total excitement for most of the fight he turned grossly negative. only making remarks when a fighter missed the target. now I understand why dad constantly argued with Cosell through the tv when I was a little kid. I have KZfaq to watch these old fights and now I find myself picking at Howard. 😊 I love watching the older boxing matches (pre 80s) all the way back. but the only fights I have to mute are the latter years of Cosell. Ali certainly was past his prime here, but he really slipped precipitously after the first Spinks fight. Even during that fight which he lost, he showed (like this fight) some flashes of his former self. But if you watch him carefully in both the 2nd Spinks fight, the Holmes fight, and finally the Berbick fight, he is greatly diminished even in comparison to early 1977.

Can you blame him though 🤔 even as a Ali fan. I got bored of his antics. I wanna see him fight. But it was just all ego
@Condorman19 ай бұрын
@@jarvasedundy1 I was not impressed how in his later years he leaned on his opponents all the time rather than fight. But Howard and Ali were a tag team. Most of it was a show. planned ahead of time.
@jarvasedundy19 ай бұрын
@@Condorman1 Yes, most of Ali fights from this time frame was mostly entertainment and ego from the late 70s. That's basically all what he had to offer. Younger Ali, would have knocked this dude out by least the 7-8 round lol.
@Condorman19 ай бұрын
@@jarvasedundy1 So what was your favourite fight. I would have to say all the Ali Frazier fights. Ali didn't know what to do with Frazier's ducks and bobs and weaves and Frazier could really take a punch.

I've watched every Ali fight available and I have to say, this one sucked the most. I'd rather watch a man at his office job doing an 8 hour shift instead of watch this fight again. Ali is the greatest of all time but this was one of his few blunders that I'd rather not witness again.

you are right eme nem, though the fight was a mismatch, champs always take tuneup fights to stay sharp, Ali moved scored enough, slipped punches & won. As Howard aged he became cynical of not just boxing but of sports in general, still Howard was news & could sense a moment like he did for Ali/Spinks 2 . Quoting Bob Dylan & perhaps realizing it would be his last great call.

This was the first pro boxing card I ever attended. The co feature bouts included Alfredo Escalera and Roberto Duran. This was a horrible bout but at 13 years old when I was there, I didn't care because it was Ali and I could say I saw him in person!!

Ali was 35,but still played a 22 year old Evangelista...
@idinurov75514 жыл бұрын

This lacklustre performance was typical of Ali in his second reign. A lot of them were snore-a-thons, I remember. Definitely shouldn't have fought into 1978, and could have quit after Manila. That's all by-the-by of course. Still goes down in history as the greatest champion boxing has ever known.

Agree. I will always say Ali should have retired after the "Thriller In Manilla" fight.

Ali had shed 20 pounds for this fight. A lot due to dehydration and dieting. He was mostly not in good shape post Manilla. The exception being maybe the third Norton fight. But otherwise, he was nowhere near as disciplined as he'd been before.

The commentator's ignorant words were over the top critical of Ali. After all, he won the fight by 6 clear rounds. This daft commentator needs to realize a fighter risks his life getting into the ring and the ideal scenario is he survives and wins - which Ali did. The only thing sillier than the commentator's attitude is his crazy obvious toupe, LMAO! R.I P., Ali - you were a great fighter and a credit to humanity.

I know it's easy to say from my angle but Ali like other boxers must have not trained as hard in later years. His body was much softer after about 1974. In retrospect if he had retired after the Foreman fight his legacy would have been much more regarded. Holmes did the same. He might have taken Spinks lightly and it tarnished his legacy.
