I’ve only watched six minutes of this and the fight hasn’t started yet and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the comments and the commercials. This is truly a window into the past. These comments by Howard Cosell about Muhammad Ali are the nicest I have ever heard him say throughout the entire era. This is A gem of a video thank you for posting.

@@southsideman4891 Ya that was a bullshit tactic. Young should have been disqualified the 2nd time he did it and the Ali should have won by default. If Young was the great fighter he put on to be, he wouldn't have had to resort to such shameful tactics. Then after the fight he had the unmitigated gaul to say he thought he won. What a dirtbag. He could have earned respect as a boxer but not from me after this.

It’s amazing how our memories skew things. My memory told me Young was out of the ring more than he was in it. As it turns out he only did it in 3 rounds, total of 4 times. I feel like Ali won this fight because Young spent too many rounds completely inactive. But Ali looked horrible in this fight.

Secondo me, Ali' l' avrebbero dovuto far smettere prima dell' incontro n.1 contro Spinks.

I kept hollering up to him, 'Don't blow the money, Ali, don't blow the money, damn it!' But the Ali you saw tonight is not the guy I have to fight. I wish it was, but it won't be. Jimmy Young is one of the most underrated and lost talents in boxing history. His awkward style combined with his good hand speed was hard to deal with and he gave a lot of the top boxers difficult fights. Nobody wanted to fight Young on his good nights. Unfortunately his career is marked with a mediocre record and the politics of boxing probably never allowed him to be a world champion like he should have. @David McFrost when you’re fighting for a title, you have to beat the champ more then just by a little bit, you have to make him look foolish. Ali took his punches like they were nothing and struck back and maintained himself in the ring. It was not a clear over power, there for he should remain the champ.

@David McFrost doesn’t change the fact that he simply has speed and great timing before he denied entry of the U.S.A armed forces. I don’t agree with that, putting aside his personal choices there is no doubt about it that Ali had very fast hands and accurate striking in his prime. If you were handed the opportunity for millions of dollars and we’re faced with the same persona to remain the face of boxing for money, you would be foolish to think anyone would turn that down. Money alters a lot of things and unfortunately sports is one of them, but he is still one of the greatest fighters of all time, not my idol.

Young was clever. Ali had trouble. Ali was not in shape. He was collecting cash. However, Young in his prime was a fantastic defensive fighter. You have to give credit to Young he was very smart fighter. Young threw a lot of punches. He landed most of his shots. Young putting his head through the ropes, hurt his case for the win against Ali. This fight frustrated Ali a great deal more than he wanted to admit. Even a younger Ali would have had some problems with Young. A younger Ali would have beat Young a lot easier in his prime. Ali still would have been frustrated by the cleverness of Jimmy Young. Jimmy Young was one of the greatest defensive fighters that ever fought as a heavyweight.

Good points Adam, however a younger Ali say Ernie Terrell Ali would have zero issue with Young. Terrell was also a terrific defensive fighter with his guard held way up. But the amount of punches Ali through against Terrell would destroy Young. What's my name? Classic.
@thereg60203 жыл бұрын
For me, pros and cons : - When Young win a round, it's pretty obvious. He land more punches overrall. - But we have a lot of close rounds that we can't really give to Young. - Ali should've trained more. - Young lost the 12th with the referee count a knocked down for being too much out the ropes. - Young overrall in the fight was too much out the rope, throw some low blows (I don't think it was intentional but still not pleasant to see...) and grab maybe a little too much. Close contest, scorecards are too nice with Ali, BUT I don't see Young really TAKE the title.

All those punches that Ali received on his head in the ropes while he covered his face affected his brain badly. Here you can see how difficult is to land a punch.. I think Ali didn't prepare for this fight or underestimated Young.

Ali was the greatest. Why? Over his career he beat and lost a few to so many that were good enough to be champion themselves for years. Foreman, Frazier, Shavers, Norton and many others. We forget that there were many great boxers who were not Champions. I believe that the field during Ali's time was the best.

Even though it is not the greatest fight, I find it very intriguing to watch Young box, fox and counter Ali! I had it a draw and don’t think it was a big robbery. But, man, Young was a good boxer and I find the 70s to be the Golden era of the heavyweight division with Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Norton, Young, Lyle, Shavers, Quarry, Holmes etc. Simply amazing!
@kennethbrady Жыл бұрын
I had it a draw too, 70-70. But I did not deduct any points away from Young for sticking his head out of the ring. Maybe I should've. For some reason it didn't bother me as much as it has bothered others. Perhaps I was biased, pulling for the underdog. I had five rounds even at 5 - 5 (rounds 3, 5, 10, 12, 15).

Ali Completely out of shape and gave away the fight as he was clearly outboxed by Jimmy Young. However, young disqualified him self in my opinion by ducking outside the ropes more than once which really classifies him as a coward.

This fight was terrible. Ali was fat and Young didn't fight hard enough. That being said, Young deserved the decision. I scored it 9-5-1 Young. If the judges scored these fights honestly, Ali would have been forced to retire much sooner instead of taking so much needless damage late in his career!
@MrCrystalcranium5 жыл бұрын
Simple fact is that Ali should have retired after Manila. That fight finished him but there was still more money to be wrung out of the championship. The only one in the entourage who wanted him to quit was Pacheco. He didn't train for this fight and at this age, he needed to be trained to a razor's edge to be competitive. In the 12th round, he threw an overhand right at Young and staggered out of exhaustion after it. I don't know if his skills were all that eroded, he did throw some hard and crisp punches but Young was a terrible pick as an opponent at this stage of his career....defensive and cagey...just slick enough to make him look horrible. IMO, Young didn't do enough to win the fight but he did do enough to make Ali look bad.

Hard fight to watch. 230 doesn't look good on Ali. He still had decent footwork occasionally, but the reaction time wasn't there. I've never seen so many low blows that didn't involve Joe Frazier, good thing Ali had "2 rolls of fat where there used to be one". Ref gave a 8-count to Young at the end of the 12th and should have done that several more times, that's a 10-8 rounds and the 13th shoulda been.. No belt for Jimmy because of that "defense".

Lol Jimmy Young fought like a coward . Ducking between the ropes like the WWEs Iron Sheik while someones taking the fight trying to punch you . No judge will give a chump a win over the champion . You got to take the Championship from the champ . And Bobbu Roberts you dont know boxing all three of you dont . Muhammad Ali was past his prime when he fought them . His 3 1/2 year exile from boxing changed him he lost alot of his reflexes . Some one that knows boxing Cus D Amato was the 1st one to notice it Alis trainer didnt even see it said Ali was clowning . Cus een Ali sparring for his comeback fight with Jerry Quarry . He said Muhammad Ali still had the speed and power . But he is getting hit way to much and that worried him .He also said lost his reflexes and foot work to avoid a punch . Heavyweight fighters can get to him now . Look at Cus DeAmato Muhammad Ali 1970 . He told Ali to his face he is not the same fighter because of the 3 1/2 years he lost and Joe Frazier would beat him . Muhammad Ali from the 1970s isnt the same fighter as the 1960s he had to changed his style and still became champ fighter the Best fighters from the 1970s . Learn boxing !

That Cosell missed the big right hand Ali landed late in round 5 (in fact Ali landed many rights that he talked right over) that rocked Young was a result of his compelling windbaggery......the fact he missed that Young was hurt in round 12....deliberately ducked outside the ropes to protect himself.....precipitating a knockdown count by Ref Kelly....at a critical juncture of the fight.....was pure negligence.
