Bugner was much under-appreciated here in Britain - and given a really hard time by the media - an excellent fighter and not given the credit he deserved!

I like how Bugner's style and Ali's style mirror eachother. Ali uses head movement more and Bugner catches more shots on his arms but their footwork is majestic. It's nice seeing two boxers actually box.

Bugner had a massive right hand early in his career. Unfortunately he killed a boxer (Ulric Regis) and it seemed to affect him, he always boxed behind his left jab after that. Similar thing happened, albeit later in his career, with Chris Eubank who seemed reluctant to put it all in with his big right, after the Watson fight. Boxers will never admit how much these things affect them, but it would affect anyone with a conscience. I think Bugner could have achieved more if it hadn't been for that.

Going to the distance with the greatest heavyweight of all time is quite the accomplishment.
@moseskpakor742719 күн бұрын
Going to the distance with the greatest is an achievement? Well, it might be, but it's still a loss anyway. One thing I took notice in Ali's fights, especially against white boxers was that he hardly knocked them out but took them to distance with serious beating of their lives, except the referee stopped the fight. This fight against Bugner not an exception either
@zacconnolly7435 жыл бұрын
You hear the commentator “not too bad for a first round” that round was better than most heavyweight boxing matches nowadays. Where has the skill gone. The golden era of boxing. True fighters that would walk through this current generation.

Can't stand Cossel. Bugner hit Ali with a right and he dismissed it, saying only British fans were cheering. Bugner connected again with a right that rocked Ali, and Cossel dismissed it as just pushing Ali back. Ali landed a 1-2, but Bugner landed a harder 2 that forced Ali back, but Cossel just focused on Ali's work. Still a great round, though.

I just love the way he boxes, he can hit you from the most unorthodox angles, circling the ring while keeping you at distance with that flying jab and just when you think you've got him, he makes you back off.. I enjoy watching legends from different eras, but no one like him. RIP GOAT.

This was a good fight. Bugner was competitive- because he had sparred a lot of rounds with Ali, but Ali took him apart. Cosell could call a fight better than most commentators, but his expertise was mixed with a lot of bullshit. Ali was hitting Bugner with a lot of short right hands, over right hands- and one-twos, that Cosell rarely mentioned. He was a head case when it came to Ali- criticizing and praising him at the same time. Ali was beautiful in this fight. It may as well have been an exhibition.

@GustavusAdolphus1Sure he matured into and gained other skills but he lost his most infamous skill, his speed. If he had kept fighting he might have kept his hand and foot speed well who know for how long. He could have matured as a fighter whilst retaining his speed. I doubt frazier would have landed many punches on him if that were the case. Coming back after a long layoff proved that physically he was never going to be as fast as he was before. Also google and watch some of the fighters Ali fought pre 1967. There were some very good fighters. Ali made fighters look bad because of his dancing and speed. Watch the movements of fighters tyson knocked out when cuss was there. Now look at any fight of Ali pre the 3.5 year ban. Can you tell me if tyson can hit Ali? Watch sonny listons other fights and see the similarilites he has with tyson. Than watch Ali v liston. I love Tyson but he really didnt have much competition during his early years. Ali achieved so much even after his 3.5 years off and after he clearly slowed down.

Muhammad Ali was so good he often appears to play with his opponents, not just the obvious clowning moments, i mean in terms of actual commitment to do maximum damage and get rid of his opponents as quickly as possible....he beats EVERYONE without exception past and present, to the punch....no-one matches his hand speed, skills, speed of foot, balance, neither did anyone display a better ability to absorb a good punch, perhaps only Joe Frazier was equal in that regard....no-one, displayed more confidence, self belief, in, and, out of the ring. My initial and central point was especially true before his three and a half year absence from the ring.....three and a half years where it's fair to speculate would have been his prime years, certainly physically.

George Foreman, with management and coaching equivalent to Ali’s, would have been victorious over Ali. In contrast to all his capabilities, Ali lacked a knockout punch. And, he had trouble with 1. variant styles (Ken Norton who broke Ali’s jaw in 1973 and probably won that fight), 2. Determined, stalking punchers with a solid chin (Joe Frazier, and, also, Joe’s closest descendent, Mike Tyson, who would have swarmed Ali relentlessly) and, 3. Fighters with footwork, boxing ability, and good defensive skills - Leon Spinks who cleaned Ali’s clock in their first fight.. Ali, as all boxers, had his flaws and weaknesses. He benefitted from coaching from the greatest coaches, trainers and managers of his time, which all of his opponents did not.

On February 14, 1973 Elvis Presley presented Muhammad Ali with an 'Elvis Style' robe emblazoned with the words, 'People's Choice' on the back in rhinestones and jewels. The wording was a mistake as Ali was known as the 'The Peoples Champion'. Elvis was very upset about this but it too late. Ali thanked Elvis for the robe then went directly to the Las Vegas Convention Center for his fight that night against Joe Bugner where he wore Elvis' robe for the first time. Often the story is told he did not wear it this night, but as you can see in the video clip below, he sure did, and he won the fight too! As an aside Sammy Davis Jr was ringside for the fight and bought into the ring post fight by Ali. Al wore the robe a second time, entering the ring on March 31, 1974 at the Sports Arena in San Diego California, for his first fight with Ken Norton. The television commentator can be heard to say 'That robe was given by Elvis Presley at his last fight in Las Vegas. It cost around $3000.00 and it's Ali's pride and joy. On the back it says 'The People's Choice' in rhinestones and jewels and he loves it'. Ali lost the fight (only trhe second professional fight he had ever lost) and never again wore the robe considering it bad luck. 'Elvis was my close personal friend. He came to my Deer Lake training camp about two years before he died. He told us he didn't want nobody to bother us. He wanted peace and quiet and I gave him a cabin in my camp and nobody even knew it. When the cameras started watching me train, he was up on the hill sleeping in the cabin. Elvis had a robe made for me. I don't admire nobody, but Elvis Presley was the sweetest, most humble and nicest man you'd want to know.' - Muhammad Ali Source: ElvisPresleyPhotos.com

Round 10. How did Bugner ever take those punches straight to the face? It was tough to watch.

Cassius Clay changed his name to a false prophet who had black slaves and called them raisin heads! His parents named him after a White abolitionist who hated slavery! Someone should have educated him!

Mohammed could had put him away hardly any body shots too much looking for the head shot. Bugner took a lot of punishment and gave a massive effort great fight. Old joe would had made a good champion in 2010. But in his day it was an golden age for the big boys of boxing

I sometimes look at these fights and wonder what scoring system was in place for fights like these. I guess in this case that Nevada didn't have a must-10 rule at the time.

That long hair of bugnars.... All you see is ali constantly going upside his head making his mullet jump in pain. But atleast he made it to a decision cause that left eye got cut in the middle of the first round from a two piece with no biscuit.

That isn’t a mullet. His hair is long at the sides. But I see your point.

This is how heavyweights, and all boxing weights, should contest a bout... with boxing and not one moment of clinching, grabbing, wrestling...etc.

i don't know if its true but i heard that joe boxed one guy that died and he seemed to loose that killer instinct boxers have just not enough power in the gloves to really do damage i know he could take a lot of punishment but never found out if it was true that a guy died
