Ali was slow in this fight, as by this time he was pretty much past it, which is why he was fighting tomato cans like Dunn, Coopman, and Evangelista, who were glorified club fighters. He underestimated Shavers, thinking Shavers was old and slow, or else Ali wouldn't have added him to the bum of the month clubs in his final days. His ego (and need of money because his entourage bled him dry) figured the inexperienced Spinks would be no problem either and he wouldn't have been if Ali was even half of what he used to be, but Ali was on fumes in the last days. The Holmes and Berbick fights were hard to watch. He should have retired after the Manilla fight in '75, but sadly, he still needed money (or should I say the people who sponged off of him needed money).

@@malikrehankhanzaeitribespa9488 Perhaps you should try and learn the English language before using it to make comments about things that you obviously don't understand. Richard Dunn was a tomato can, there's nothing "personal" about it. Six months after this he was knocked out in one round by Joe Bugner, and his next fight after that (which was also his last) was a knockout loss to Kallie Knoetze. Ali had a great career, but he was slowing with declining skills in 1976, and that's something his cornerman and he himself have admitted, so why this basic fact bothers you so much is rather weird, like you're a teenager with his poster on your bedroom wall or something. Also, why you insist I would be "jealous" against a man whose been dead for years and who suffered from dementia from too many blows to the head for the last 30 years of his life is rather strange too.

There's nothing like Lionheart Richard. Ali was just 'playing' with him and he(Richard Dunn) thinks he is doing something LOL. The G.O.A.Ted Mohammed Ali didn't even shift into gear two in that fight. very entertaining though.

I don't care if people agree, but I actually I think I like 70's era Ali more than 60's. He seems like he has more heart and resiliency. He took more hits (because he lost some of his speed) but at the same time he seems to hit harder. He just seems like a tougher and more experienced version of himself. It also makes it more enjoyable that his 70's fights are in color.
@JohnSmith-ct5jd
@JohnSmith-ct5jd 3 ай бұрын
Yes, but that is because with age, Ali lost some of his explosive speed. None other than Archie Moore warned then Cassius Clay about this-that his strategy relied more on speed that he would lose with the end of his youth. Ali replied that he expected to be retired by then. I think what you are seeing is Ali relying more on muscle power, and probably a good deal of weight training, and his own personal toughness, to make up for some of this. That is why Ali being in his thirties was such a handicap. Note that by contrast, George Foreman won back the title at 45. This because Foreman did not rely as much on inhuman speed, but more on physical domination. These are things that do not decline as fast with age and can be forestalled through lots of working out with weights. Peace.

It's not that people "like" 60's era more, it's that when watching him in the 70's all you can think about is what he could've been if he never had that layoff. Ali's physique in the 60's + his knowledge in the 70's would've been something we can only dream of. Ali's 2nd fight with Norton is closes we'll see to that in my opinion
@Demonizer5134
@Demonizer5134 2 ай бұрын
Right, but then he never would have been remembered as a civil rights hero. He gave up the greatest title in the world to protest an unjust war so that other people would not have to go off to fight and die. Frankly I think his legacy is perfect how it is, and I wouldn't want to change it. You can speculate all you want about what could have been, but you don't know, and nobody can know a thing like that. He lost some speed and reflexes yet gained a much tougher chin. If he had never gone through his hiatus maybe he never would have developed that type of toughness. You just can't know. My point is that in losing some skill in one area he was required to gain skill in another to make up for it. It is by these circumstances that we got his legendary fight with Foreman, where he had to attempt a new type of strategy never done before. Would you really want to change that part of history? That would be a real shame in my opinion.
@jonathanakcay
@jonathanakcay 2 ай бұрын
@@Demonizer5134 For sure those are good points, his layoff resulted in strengths that he probably wouldn't have had if he didn't, but like you said it's all hypotheticals. His legacy is perfect the way it was/is. No denying though Ali was the perfect fighter vs Zora Foley and it would've been awesome to see a few more match's in that form. That's why Ali - Norton 2 is special to me.

Good point. Larry Holmes is another fighter who did not get as much respect as he deserved. People will never forgive him for defeating a Muhammad Ali who was in the early stages of Parkinson's and should not have even been fighting. But, I watched Holmes' fight with Ken Norton, and contrasted that with Norton's various fights with Ali. The fact of the matter is, Holmes took the fight more to Norton in a way that Ali was never able. Good observation on your part.

I'm sorry. But this was not the best of Ali. Muhammad took way too many shots from this guy and only survived due to his personal toughness, and quick counterpunches. This was not the Ali who fought Sonny Liston, Floyd Patterson, Joe Frazer, or even Jerry Quarry. In those fights, Ali could literally float around his opponents, and he seldom got hit. This man-Richard Dunn-connected often to the champ. It was just lucky for Ali, that apparently Richard Dunn couldn't hit like Liston, Foreman, Frazer, Norton, Shaffer, Lyle, or Quarry.
