Thank you so much for this amazing video! I love this movie so much, and feel like it's so very underappreciated, as no-one seems to bring it up when they are talking about the good Disney movies. This movie has a perfect balance of comedy, horrific moments, life lessons, charming and lovable characters, all of which are neatly brought to us in a story that pulls us in, with breathtaking art style, catchy and memorable songs, and a timeless message that all can take to heart. This movie is a gift from mankind to itself, and should be treasured and praised as such. Once again, thank you for making this video. I needed this to cleanse my soul from the filth that Screen Junkies published (their "honest" trailer for this movie). I am so very happy to have found this channel, as you always provide your viewers with insightful breakdown of the media you are discussing, with a great attention to details, and their importance to the story being told. Thank you!

@@sunshine4957 Also, he and Mulan cancelled out each others' weaknesses. It's sad how some people only see his position and not the person behind it, the Shang who had his own weaknesses and issues because of his position. Also, what's so bad about falling in love with a boss/worker? As you said, it's important that the pursuit of those feelings happens outside of the professional relationship but I don't think portraying their feelings during training is a bad thing. As if people only fall in love with those they see as equals. Maybe that's the difference between what you show in fiction and what happens in real-life, where the former almost seems to glorify what it portrays?

I love the way Mulan uses colours. The end of the training montage with the slow motion kick looks like a propaganda poster. The scene where Shang is about to cut Mulan down with her sword, the clouds behind him are red, but the moment he tosses the sword by her feet, the clouds have lost the red hue. Not to mention the bright red sky during the ruined village scene.

The only criticism I have regarding the 1998 animated version is the scene in which Mulan cuts her hair. In ancient China, both men and women never cut their hair since they believed that their hair was a gift from their parents. Hence, cutting one's hair was the ultimate act of disrespect. The 2020 Disney live action adaptation is an abomination. The best live action version is the 2009 movie, Mulan: Rise of a Warrior. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZsugZpx_ktzLdI0.html

Mulan's name means "wood orchid" or "magnolia." As such, magnolias serve as a running motif in the movie. The first Disney animated film to openly deal with warfare. This film marked Disney's first ever DVD, released in November 1999. Mulan touches her hair a lot because animators noticed that Ming-Na Wen did. The opening titles were put together by simply putting watercolor on rice paper. Jackie Chan (Shang's martial arts model) voices Shang in the Chinese release. Chan, who is a hugely successful singer in Asia, also made a music video of the song "I'll Make a Man out of You." This is the only Disney animated film to use the phrase "cross-dresser." The film was almost rated PG because of the use of the phrase. Mulan is the second Disney Princess to have both parents alive and present during the entire film, the first being Aurora in Sleeping Beauty (1959) and the third being Rapunzel in Tangled (2010), and Merida being the fourth in Brave (2012), with fifth being Moana (2016) Chi Fu's name literally means "to bully," in Chinese. The name "Khan" translates to "prince" but can also mean "king" or "leader" in many Turco-Mongol languages. Mulan is one of only two Disney princesses to wear trousers, with the other being Jasmine from Aladdin (1992). The theme song in the opening credits, as well as the melody for "Honor to Us All," is the same tune Peter Pan plays on his pan flute in the Disney version of the movie The first Disney animated film to feature an Asian heroine. Crickets are considered a symbol of good luck in China, hence the inclusion of one as a character. When Mulan sings "Reflection" in her father's shrine, the writing on the temple stones is the names of the Disney animators who worked on the film, written in ancient Chinese.

i started the movie night with my 7 year old with Shrek.. i thought he would love it. he did not. the only thing he liked was donkey. so... i showed him Mulan. HE....LOVED IT!!!! i was excited for the live action until i saw the clips of the beginning and heard that she was "magical" and did not have to work for her skills. then there was all the political stuff and now i am just disappointed. if i choose to watch the new one at some point... i will watch a pirated version for free.

I loved this. You even pointed out a lot of things about the film that I didn't even notice! In terms of animated Disney films, The Lion King, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, and Bambi are my favorites. In terms of live-action Disney films, my vote goes to the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.

Fellow Pirates of the Caribbean fan here. First is the best, but I love the next two. I enjoyed the 4th and was mostly disappointed by the 5th. I don't think I will watch the 6th if they actually get around to making it. I wanted to see Jack's relationship with Angelica get more development and to know what happened to the preacher and mermaid. I thought both couples had great chemistry. What are your thoughts on 4 and 5?

I really enjoyed Mulan's mom as a character because she embodies the then current ideal for her sex. She's demure, supportive, and quite often silent. The way that Fa Zhu cares for his wife and tries to shelter her shows that they have a very deep affection for each other, but the film also shows how Fa Li's choices/prescribed role often puts her in a kind of helpless position. In the silhouette scene where she walks away from her husband in grief over his looming death in battle and when she just sinks into herself after Mulan leaves for the army, and she realizes there's nothing she can do to protect her child. She seemed very well thought out to me.

The thing I like about "Make a Man Out of You" is the overall narrative. When the song starts, it's just Shen singing the song by himself as it's his overview of how things may turn out. However, I like it because it visualizes how all his soldiers essentially suck at the moment. Ergo, he's still singing the song by himself. When it gets to act 2 of the song, the visuals change as all the soldiers are growing stronger and acting more in sync. To top it off, this is where everyone is singing the "Make a Man Out of You" claiming that Shen is no longer on his own here.

I watched it way over 100 times in my life and I am still impressed every single time by how marvelous it is. A true masterpiece in the art of animation. 32:39 summarizes everything everyone needs to know about Mulan: "One fully fledged Disney masterpiece, from start to finish. - Incredible protagonists; - a serviceable and certainly intimidating antagonist; - amazing and loveable side characters; - humor for both children and adults; - many morals that all walks of life can learn from; - a unique, beautiful, and memorable art style; - possibly the greatest soundtrack in movie history; - great action; - awesome spectacle; - moments of tragedy and extremely high tension; - setups and payoffs; - structurally near bulletproof writing; and - one of the greatest examples of a strong female character in fiction."

Major props to you for recognizing that this film is actually fan fiction! A bit galling really to hear bloggers compare other versions to this one, as if it actually is canon. Faulting one fanfic (take your pick of the various versions out there) for failing to adhere to another fanfic (this animated film) reveals a lack of understanding of the fandom. I get that this version is probably the first most people outside of Asian or Chinese-speaking spheres are exposed to...but...the OG deserves the acknowledgement as the inspiration for subsequent fanfics/homages/tributes through the comparison of fanfics to the original ballad, rather than comparing fanfics to each other.

Have you noticed Shan Yu didn't seem to care about Mulan's gender when he went after her? You could argue that he was too busy trying to kill her to even care, but in the Mongolian culture the women had equal rights to men, they can divorce their husbands if they like, be leaders, and even fight alongside their husbands. So to Shan Yu Mulan was just another soldier in his way. For a Disney villain, he's quite a progressive man.

I love every single thing about this movie but what captured me as a kid and still does to this day is its message on gender norms. As a kid it was very simplistic for me: I loved that she, a woman, was a badass and saved China. As an adult it’s so much deeper. Let’s dive in. Chien-Po is arguably the most feminine man in the movie. He’s softspoken, chill, kind, easygoing, doesn’t solve issues with his fists and doesn’t feel the need to prove himself and he is also undoubtedly the strongest man in the bunch showcased right after the avalanche when he’s carrying like an insane amount of people (not really possible irl but whatever my suspension of disbelief will allow it). Then there’s the end when they’re in the capital and about to save the emperor and they dress up in makeup and female clothes once again demonstrating that femininity is strength. And then the most obvious one that the movie is showing you during the entire movie: Mulan just kicking ass left, right and center. We love having the same message shown in three different ways.

My favourite Disney movie is The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The Hellfire song is a masterpiece and the rest of the movie is pretty damn close to being one. Also Frollo's not just my favourite Disney villain but one of my favourite villains period. I know he wasn't completely accurate to the book but there was no way Disney could get away with going full Victor Hugo. However, they REALLY pushed the boundaries with what they could get away with, not just with the Hellfire song itself but also with Frollo killing an innocent mother (granted, I don't think he actually intended to kill her, at least not on the steps of Notre Dame), abusing his adopted son, having his prisoners whipped whilst also giving advice about how to make the torture as painful as possible, and burning down a good chunk of Paris because of his boner. That was back when Disney had balls and artistic integrity.

For the record, the ballad of mulan doesn't say anything about Mulan's fighting abilities. That characterization was invented during early Wuxia adaptations. What does the ballad actually tell us? We know she's the veteran of a hundred battles over a decade of war, but we also know that she becomes a General. Generals usually don't fight on the front lines, and I think her service to China was always attributed to wit rather than violence. We know that She cares deeply for her father, she is decisive in going off to war, and she is determined, leading her army for 12 years. She is devoted above all to family, turning down the Emperor's offer to make her a counsel in order to go home. We also know that she was weaving at the loom to console herself about her father's conscription. When she returns she is glad to put on her old robes and decorate her hair. She likes being a woman. She just happens to be good at being a soldier too, and those things don't have to be exclusive. The last line of the poem tells us the moral. When you catch a male rabbit he'll kick around trying to get free. When you catch a female rabbit she'll close her eyes. But if you let them both free then you can't tell which is which. Sure there's differences between men and women. But those differences are not important in the grand scheme. Any kind of person can be a hero.
