The writers didn’t understand that “chi” isn’t a superpower, it is “life force” that flows through the body. Acupuncture is meant to regulate the flow of chi. In some stories there is reference to something like “cultivating” chi but again you’re not born with that you have to work on it. Witches being persecuted for magic wasn’t a thing in China; that is largely a western Christian idea. Some people in those times were seen as having magical powers like shamans but they were generally respected unless they used their “powers” to do harm.

As a little girl, the 'Be a Man' sequence was one of my absolute favourites in Disney! Watching Mulan fail over and over again, question and doubt herself, getting kicked out and then using her ingenuity to retrieve the arrow and prove herself was just so inspiring! It not only showed you that with hard work and determination you can achieve anything (even if you are a bit of a bumbling mess and feel out of place!), but it also showed that you don't have to be the same as the others to excel. Mulan used what she could (she wasn't as strong but she WAS lighter than everyone else) to innovate the method around her unique strengths and skills. She didn't expect an easy ride, nor to be treated any differently to the others because being a soldier is not only a right, but also huge responsibility that requires you to fight and pay a price for inclusion. So she made herself useful and worked at it with her own blood, sweat and tears, using her hopes and dreams for her familial honour as motivation. I love this. It didn't dumb the world down, nor did it change the standards of strength/war/bravery, which require one to 'be a man'! Rather, it shows a woman matching up to those standards in her own ways, without any special treatment, and without the view that it's just a blind right! THAT'S true feminism! This is why 'be a man' was my motivation song as a young girl!! Ladies, instead of waiting around for fucking Chi, you must be swift as the coursing river with all the force of a great typhoon! 💪🏼

Johnny Skinwalker very, very rare in this day and age! Honestly, I’d argue that the old Disney characters are so much more complex and interesting than anything coming out today. I mean, take Lion King + Hunchback of Notre Dame, for instance.. they explored such compelling themes as the burden of leadership, death and the ‘circle of life’, prejudice, justice and the dichotomy of good/evil, and even sexuality and lust in the context of religion etc... You’d never get that today!! And despite what the loser feminists think .. the OG Disney princesses had so much more substance and ‘feminism’ to them. Mulan was the best!! And even Belle from Beauty the beast was a true inspiration for nerdy little gals (like me 🤣) who liked to learn and read books etc. And her love story with the beast was not only a genuine meeting of the minds (and one that gave Belle an upper-hand, by the way), but also a poignant example of what true love is; self-sacrifice, altruism, compromise, and intellectual compatibility. I certainly learnt what true love was from that film. But nowadays, in order to have a ‘feminist’ character, they either have to be completely alone (I.e, Frozen) or have superhuman powers to establish their ‘difference’ in an otherwise dumb, over-simplified world (I.e, this new adaptation of Mulan + captain marvel etc). How boring and also SOO uninspiring. It’s as if they think kids these days can’t handle any complex, adult themes so they dumb everything down/spell it all out so there’s no risk of - god forbid- any interpretation or intellectual debate around the themes. Ok rant over 😂🤦🏻‍♀️
@penelope3926
@penelope3926 3 жыл бұрын
Ne Ws Sure, I can appreciate that. And I understand that Disney took a different path with her character that focused on her ingenuity rather than her warrior-like strength etc. However, the version that you’re citing would STILL have to show an element of struggle with respect to her training. It would have to show all the years she spent training to gain the level of competency she supposedly had by the time the war came around. Otherwise, what’s the point of the movie? It’d just be- Girl is born a warrior, pretends to be boy and saves the world. There has to be an element of struggle at play for us to feel like there’s something actually at stake... so that we see a kind of journey and character development threaded through the story. The journey and changes they go through along the way IS the story. Otherwise, it runs the risk of being a flat, one-dimensional character with an even crappier plot-driven story.
@mr.safensound4238
@mr.safensound4238 3 жыл бұрын
@Ne Ws haven't yet seen the film adaptation but in the (fairy tale) cartoon, Mulan certainly has 'skills', before she joins the army. She's shown as a very capable horserider, and someone already familiar with how to wear armour and carry a sword. Unusual skills for a 'common girl' but still someone with no 'real combat' training until she joined the army. What had made Mulan so exceptional was her absolute conviction, her drive and determination to restore her family honour at all costs. If you're point about 'realism' was valid, what would prevent any and all aspiring young males (or females) from also training with their fathers at home, and becoming extremely skilled, without needing any military training? What made Mulan's situation so unique? Was Mulan the ONLY person in China who was trained by their father at home? Realistic? Now come on!

As a person of Chinese ethnicity, I haven't been this insulted by Hollywood since the Jaden Smith/Jackie Chan version of the Karate Kid (which inexplicably was set in China despite being called the Karate Kid). About Karate Kid, that was because Hollywood can’t distinguish between Asians. Also, why waste all those resources on a new film when you can watch Zhao Wei’s Mulan with English subtitles instead? I think John Woo could have put the $200M budget to better use. Maybe they used up all of the budget on the shitty CGI and writing? And don’t get me started on the scaffolding fight scene. If my memory serves me right, Jet Li had a similar fight scene in one of his Once Upon a Time in China movies and Mulan’s fight scene is hardly up to par. So much for female empowerment. Because of this pathetic attempt at a remake, Hollywood will probably bar women from directing high-budget films from now on.

Other than the name, was there anything particularly insulting about that version of The Karate Kid? I'm not Chinese, but it looked like they were trying to be fairly respectful, and Jackie Chan's character came across as well written and nuanced to me from an outsider's perspective.

Everyone just watch the Chinese live action movie instead: "Hua Mulan: Rise of a Warrior." Unlike the Disney version, it's pretty damn good and keeps Mulan's core character intact while not being anything like either Disney version. It focuses more on the actual war consequences and relationships than just trying to say how women can fight too. Also no supernatural bullshit, AND they sing. Cuz y'know... war songs absolutely exist and are a staple of troop morale.

One of the things I loved the most about Animated Mulan is that she is fundamentally a lazy teenager who comes up with ingenious, clever tricks to do the things she needs to do with the least possible effort: she feeds the chicken using the dog to drag their feed around, and in the same way she figures she can climb the pole using the heavy discs as counterweight, and she defeats the Huns causing an avalanche instead of fighting them one by one. She uses her smarts where she can't use strength - but Live Action Mulan doesn't have to, because she's already a superhuman.

@PaleMagnolia Well said. Thank you. 💜Thats what I think about if you don't have any of does emotions or your struggles then whats the point. It seems this Mulan 1998 has some kind of bond between women and men. While this one is more to men is like telling you to be a men so that no one can judge you anymore. While being a women is just going to cause you to get married. Thats what is telling to me. Also not having a love interest is just the opposite actually. I like the animated more because of that as well having a love interest but this one is just showing that they woudn't be a love interest except for a random guy who likes Mulan but Mulan might not like the guy she even try to kill him when he was just giving a hand when she fell down. There is no emotion except being emotionless or angry. The crying scenes are fake to me is not that emotional at all. The so called funny scenes aren't even funny. Its just odd.

Mulan being a feminist icon is already a bad thing though. Since her true story doesn't have anything to do with feminism. She's praised for joining the army. And it's likely Disney got that whole "execute women for joining a man only thing" from Ancient Greece which did have a law against women attending the Olympics. The punishment was execution for those women.

Mulan in 1998 was a complex and relatable character. She was well rounded and showed that a woman can use her strengths to achieve her goals through hard work and determination. The Mulan character in 2020 was the most flat character I have ever seen. They didn't show her develop at all. They didn't develop her relationship with her comrades or show her working hard or struggle or learn during training. Nothing was earned. She didn't learn anything. Neither did the other characters. When they ended up following her and supporting her it felt hollow because it didn't show they're relationship with her or they're sexist attitudes develop. I agree that they made her a Mary Sue. Mary Sue is a term that gets overused a lot even when it's not true, but they really did make her a Mary Sue in this movie. Plus the supporting characters: fellow soldiers, her sister, etc were extremely underdeveloped. I didn't care about any of the characters. The stakes were much lower because the villains didn't seem as threatening at all. I did like her costume at the end and the visuals, but the script had cringe you lines and flat characters. It should have gone through a major rewrite.

Speaking English is LEAST of your worries if you want to talk about Western elements or even Chinese authenticity in the film. - Qi (or chi) energy is not some voodoo magic that only a select few people can have. This is not Star Wars, it ain't the Force. Chinese believe everyone has qi energy within them and you need have a good balance of qi to stay healthy. Live a proper lifestyle, eat a proper diet and practice martial arts to balance your qi. If your qi becomes unbalanced, you fall sick. Practicing your "qi powers" will not cause you to be exiled. - Qi energy does not grant you the ability to transform into animals. Only deities and demons can transform into animals, and that's magic. - The phoenix in Chinese beliefs is NOT a guardian spirit. In fact, it will peace out if there is corruption or danger. The phoenix is a symbol of peace, happiness and prosperity, so it will go to places that is peaceful. - The concept of "individualism", which Mulan displays throughout the film, is largely an American concept, not a Chinese one. No way a commander of an army will encourage a soldier to "be themselves". They are more likely to shout "KNOW YOUR PLACE". - Serving the emperor is not an honor for the Chinese people. In fact, this is more of a Japanese thing, and Japanese are not loyal to their emperor, they are loyal to their shogun. Serving the emperor is more of a "divine law", because it is believed that the title of emperor is bestowed onto an individual by the heavens themselves, hence to obey the emperor is the law.

To your point about men having more athleticism than women generally: this is true in some respects, but a bit oversimplified. I understand it's not the point of your video, but I'mma make a thing out of it anyway because I think it's interesting and I don't like seeing it boiled down to a black-and-white "men are stronger" statement. All of the things I'm about to mention are statistical averages. They describe overall trends, not individuals. Men tend to have larger bodies than women - which comes with more muscle mass and larger, longer bones. (Fun fact: there's virtually no difference in the strength of muscles between male and female athletes. Male bodies simply tend to have more muscle, not "better" muscles, than female bodies.) Men also have more stable ligaments. So, overall, men's bodies are better equipped for things like throwing, striking, lifting weights, and taking hits. Women have more relaxed ligaments than men, which makes them easier to injure but allows more flexibility. Women have a lower center of gravity and a wider pelvis, granting them superior balance. Athletic female bodies tend to be more energy-efficient than athletic male bodies. This results in superior endurance. Also, women are believed to have a higher pain tolerance than men (which makes sense from an evolutionary perspective, given how painful and important childbirth is). So, while men are stronger in the common ways strength is described (lifting, striking, movement speed, taking hits without serious injury), women have some important athletic advantages over men (pain tolerance, flexibility, balance, endurance). The difference in athletic capabilities of men versus women is far from the point of the movie, though. Disney's 1998 Mulan is roughly equal to all of her fellow soldiers in physical capability once everyone has been training together for a while. Her being female is never a physical obstacle to her. It's a social/cultural one, because if she is discovered to be a woman, she will be executed and her family dishonored (plus, her father might be enlisted in her place, meaning she will have tried to save his life for nothing). And she doesn't succeed because she's the most athletic of the soldiers, either. She succeeds because she is intelligent, resourceful, determined, and resilient. These traits define her, and she uses them to drive the story over and over again. These traits are what make her a strong character for boys and girls alike to look up to. The fact that she also kicks ass is just icing on the cake.

Giving Mulan superpowes undermines her character and the feminist message behind the first movie. Mulan feels trapped in her societies framework for femininity, but thrives in the army because she is able to express it in the way that is natural to her. She builds relationships, she has to think outside the box because she knows she can’t overcome challenges by brute force. While marriage is constricting and opressive in her old life, she is attracted to and (in a Disney way) is able to explore her sexuality even if it is with her CO. She is more equal to him in the soldier/officer dynamic than she would be as a traditional fiancee. She defeats the villain by embracing her womanhood, in a dress and parrying him with the fan. Not by being «more man» and using her magical «chi» muscle power to kick an arrow. All her victories in the original comes from her and her ingenouity, she never needs to be the most physically strong to be valuable.
@corruptangel6793
@corruptangel6793 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't see the marriage thing as being oppressive or constricitve in the original. After all, Mulan was perfectly willing and even desperate to make a good impression on the Matchmaker. The original (in my opinionat least) did a good job of showing how ancient china was a male dominated society and that woman didn't have much outside of becoming a good wife for a good husband, all without vilifying the men. It allowed us the audience to make up our own minds about how unfair it was and support Mulan in her endever without making us need to hate the men.
@lisakristin1810
@lisakristin1810 3 жыл бұрын
Corrupt Angel I saw it as a question of honor, she’s desperate to please the matchmaker because that was what she had to do for her family. She is obviously smart but needed cheat notes to remember «punctual» and other easy questions. And then singing a song about how this persona didn’t fit her. Her heart wasn’t in it but she would still do her duty. And I didn’t mean that the men were bad, the movie has a good mix of compelling male and female characters. It’s about a very confined societal structure which is constricting if a person doesn’t fit the assigned mold.

The only problem is that even keeping the story about feminism would have ruined the movie. At least from a integrity viewpoint. Just like @Corrupt Angel said the old movie "did a good job of showing how ancient china was a male dominated society and that woman didn't have much outside of becoming a good wife for a good husband." That was Disney's intention and it perpetuates the misinformation about ancient China. I'm going to guess neither of you know anything about the real Mulan. Because the real story has nothing to do with feminism or rising up against a male dominated society since there was no "male dominated society." When the real Mulan entered the military in her dad's place she was shown respect for her bravery. The old movie did a good job of storytelling with this bad message in mind so that's why western audiences love it. Even I loved it growing up. But then my bf pointed out the real story to me when he was explaining why his people hated that movie. And this movie keeps that part in but also did a poor job of storytelling it thanks to the SJW movement.

PS: That whole "girl entering the military will be executed" thing is probably based on Ancient Greece's law punishing women with death for trying to attend the Olympics. Women were not allowed in because the Olympics was seen as a man only event. There's a famous story of an aunt who raised a boy who became an Olympian. As his only relative she really wanted to be there for him so she snuck in wearing several layers of heavy clothes to pretend to be a man. But when her nephew won she jumped for joy in excitement and the clothes fell off revealing her. Because she went through all that trouble they allowed her to watch the rest of the Olympics and then they executed her.

@Ne Ws And yet she, at the age of NINE was jumping around rooftops and being "better than everyone else". There is a way to do a character where she grows into her power and learns how to use it and is shaped by her knowledge of it (Luke Skywalker, old Mulan, traditional Mulan) and there's a way to show a character learn nothing the entire film and just have powers cause "lol I have powers" (Rey, new Mulan). You are mistaking us talking about how terrible her stupid powers are because you assume we are denying the story. We are not. We are denying the way Disney SHOWED us about her powers. They SHOWED us that she had power as a child. They SHOWED us that she did NO TRAINING (sure they TOLD us but they did not SHOW us) to earn that power. They SHOWED us that she had to hide her powers because "lul if I show too much lul they'll know uwu". Disney made shitty decisions about the way their character of Fa Mulan learned how to use her powers and by that I mean they didn't show us at all. You need to grow up if you think you can take a 9-year old and teach them how to be in the military and they'll be better than trained warriors by their enlistment day. That does NOT happen unless someone has a magical power or a technology. Master Chief is a great example of a person who gained power by technology. Only like .05 percent of the children altered survived and learned to use their new power. Mulan has chi. Yet she did nothing to gain use to or learn how to use it. So, in conclusion, Ne Ws, fucking learn how to make a good story before you bitch at people on the internet about stories.

Making her already perfect actually conveys a terrible message. Instead of the message being "If you train hard and really push for it, you can become a great warrior", it's now "hey, you too can be as strong as this Mulan, if you are already perfect." Disney in their horrible mindset of pushing their agenda can't recognize that they are sending an insulting message, that doesn't empower your heroine and in their mind of making her more "progressive", it makes her regressive.

Ne Ws Even if you are right about that, which I don’t believe because various reviewers have explained that the reason she is so powerful is because of her chi, it still makes for a boring story. Not a lot of people enjoy a story about a practically perfect character who has no arch and doesn’t have to struggle for anything. If she became so great by training as a child that should be a greater part of the movie. Viewers want to see a character that struggles and changes as the story progresses, not be told about her progression before the movie even starts. I hope I could explain it well.

@Ne Ws No the real Mulan was trained by her father. This Mulan got a montage of her training herself while her father watched because her chi was so powerful that she can lift up rocks with her mind and balance the force or something. Disney didn't make the real story at all. Because the real story about how she was trained and then enters the army also shows her father is proud of her for doing it not weirdly angry at her and the army doesn't have some murder girls who try to fight for their country law either.

@Ne Ws If that is the case, if they wanted to take that road, then easy, show us how her father is training her, how she is strugling to train as a kid with her dad, but has determination and the desire to do it, for him and herself, she wants to make him proud and to fell stronger, but you need to show that, later show how scared, worried, even upset she is that her beloved dad, who has always been there to suport and love her, is about to go to a war and likelly...never come back, how she tells her dad she wants to go instead in private, only for him to turn her down harshly, but not cause she is a girl only, but later show he is also scared of lose his daugther, he knows how brave and kind she is, and how despise all that training she had, yeah... The military is a heck other level and on the top of that, the cruel war that can change her or kill her, that either she dies in battle or by been discovered... That would show us, how such a close bond they share, daugther and father, a dad who loves his family, and wants to keep it safe even if he has to die, a daugther who trutelly loves her family, who despise her fear of been killed, discovered or bring dishonor to her family, she is more scared of lose her loved ones and in the way of that journey, she learns and discovers herself with hard work, effort, intelligence, using her weakness to her advantage, as yeah... Like it or not, guys have better athletic feautures that ladies, especially if they have the same training... But she became her own thype of soldier, who sure doesn't fit the criteria, but still does what has to be done... 🐲 But instead we have jedi Mulan, who with the power of chi, she is a demigodness, who never strugles and her only weakness is to deal with the annoying inferior mortals around her... 😑

The only live action movie I like is Cinderella, sure it didnt need to happen, and for the longest time I thought they made the movie because someone saw the stunning dress and was like "yep, lets make a movie about that".The movie didnt really add anything new, it was basically the same story as the animated one, but I liked it. All the actors enjoyed their characters so much, that the whole movie just vibrates with positive energy and if im having a bad day I watch it (which is a really good thing) unlike for example Beauty and the beast, Emma is so gloomy and uninterested in anything that I just cant fall in love with that movie. I didnt even want to watch lion king, it looked bland, the trailer just didn't do it for me, the animation is not getting better (I mean technically yes, but visually not) I want to see something I never saw before, Lions on the other hand I saw many times. Good example was Aladin, the movie wasn't perfect but I love what they did with genie, he was definitely highlight of the movie, because Will Smith was genuinely enjoying his role, and it shows, he did it justice. Animation on his part was well done and really added something magical to the movie. However I dont like what Disney is doing to their female leads, how weirdly they are twisting their motives and personalities, the only one that stayed true to herself was cinderella, and I love the message her movie makes "be kind" in this world its very hard. When someone is mean to you, its so easy to be mean back, but what takes courage is to stay positive and be kind, because kindness can change people and make the world better place. Jasmine was one of my favorite because of how lonely she felt, now she has a best friend and I cant relate to her anymore. She wants to rule and that is not a bad thing, I just wish they would show me more of how she truly cares for her people, it could have been shown so much better so we as audience could connect with her and root for the good she could bring to her kingdom. I fear for what they are going to do to Ariel, I mean she gave everything on line for one guy, she risked everything in hopes of true love at land she dreamed about her whole life. She risked loosing everything - father, sisters, her home....in hopes to find what she was missing this whole time. Which happens, sometimes love is the most important thing in our lives. With what disney did to Mulan I think they are going to change Ariels motivation....I dont knwo Im just tired of these remakes, they are not good, they make the story worse and noone is asking for them. I wish disney would go back and try to realize what made their movie so magical and memorable, they used to be making history now I dont even want to talk about them.

I agree Cinderella is the only good live action Disney has made. It didn't add much but it was nice to see Ella's relationship with her father before he passed away and the slow descend from being a loved child to a slave. What I didn't like about this Cinderella she didn't have the fight of the animated version. When the live action version is locked up, she sings a sad song. The animated version tries and succeeds to escape from her bedroom and bring the spare shoe...how come we went from actual witty and well-written female characters to what we have now?

Yah Jasmine's friend having a crush on the genie was unnecessary but you're right Will Smith nailed his role! Well it did indeed show Jasmine caring for the Kingdom and her ppl because they added a plot twist of her be one something like a Salten. And one of the BEST things that happened was Jasmine her own song. But Cinderella was still the best!!! .nearly perfect. As you said every character nailed their roles! Especially the stepmother. Everyone got into character so well. The movie only had small simple changes like Ella and the Prince meeting in the woods. And the Prince showing up at the last minute(spoiler) before Ella tries on her shoe. The 2015 Cinderella and the 98 Cinderella with Brandy/Whitney Houston are my favs!

Not because they copied it (although that is never a good sign) but because they missed a key detail. You see in the poster with the sword, in the animated one Mulan is smiling whereas in the live action when she just looks serious. It's a small detail but it shows how the makers fundamentally misunderstood what makes the animated Mulan so likeable; her confidence and charm even in the face of danger.

@Ne Ws Not that the new Mulan is more realistic when you compare the feats of animated Mulan vs Live Action Mulan. You will find that animated Mulan suffered far more and had to do far more to achieve her actually rather realistic results while Live action Mulan gets to perform superhuman feats and even has a poorly understood and implemented magic system to support her. Live Action Mulan can literally deflect arrows like she is a Jedi. Thinking about it, the live action Mulan is even less realistic then the animated one. Not to mention, there would be singing and making jokes during that time as those are things that can help troops bond together in the face of a threat they are not so well prepared for and help them take their mind off of the stress that causes. Something that gets seen in every war.
@TankHunter678
@TankHunter678 3 жыл бұрын
@Ne Ws Except chi is used as a magic system when it is not that in reality. It gets used in a way that goes beyond the level of "talent" and into the realm of the inhuman. Making it far less realistic then in the animated version where she had serious difficulty. If your response to that is "It's just a movie!" then you really cannot say that the Live Action Mulan is more realistic then the Animated Mulan, where all the mystical elements was coalesced into Mushu who was useless outside of some bits of advice (and one instance of being forced to breathe fire to be used as a lighter) and animated Mulan had musical segments because Disney movies at the time had musical segments as their signature (which was why Atlantis was maligned, it did not have musical segments making it not feel like a Disney movie). I also want to point out that in the animated movie Mulan disguised herself as an effeminate boy, as women were generally made to grow their hair out as a sign of beauty and were not permitted to learn how to fight as it was not their duty. They were to be submissive housewives of the man of the house. They were not permitted to join the army. This is why throughout the animated Mulan she does everything she can to disguise the fact that she is a woman, why it was established that if she was found out that she would be killed by law which set the tension for the rest of the movie (and why her father could not chase after her, to do so would see her executed) and the moment she was discovered her commanding officer had to pause and seriously think about whether to follow the law and kill her or let her slip away and be presumed dead in the avalanche. His decision to let her slip away ultimately leading to the best result as well as leading to the ending that fulfilled the story of the movie that even women could be warriors, that strength of arms was not all that mattered wit was important as well. As it was through wit, not strength of arms, that China was saved in its time of need.

This is the ninth review I've watched and the consensus has ranged from it being okay to it being abysmal- haven't found anyone who actually liked it. So don't worry, there are at least some other reviewers giving an appropriately negatively response.

I don't get the complaint with Captain marvel...isn't captain america the same? Both have military backgrounds, both had their abilities enhanced and both continued to train afterwards...yet captain marvel gets called a mary sue... Same with Thor...he didn't work for his powers...he was born with them, yet noone said anything when he went toe to toe with Hella (Odin's first born and a battle hardened general with quite a few battles and experience under her belt) just because he was the "God of thunder". Then you have Star-lord, your regular renegade...who happens to be the son of Ego the living planet. Tony Stark who can create an element (just because) and can figure out any problem (because he is just that smart and has plot armor thicker than the Amazon warriors from Futurama). Black Panther, a warrior and fighter...who is enhanced by tribal magic passed down generations of rulers and magical/technological body suit. ...they are all Mary Sue's in some way or another. Even Luke Skywalker...yeah he trained with Yoda for a few years, but he (much like Anakin) were the chosen ones, because the force was strong with their bloodline (yet Leia, who by all means should've had the same potential, was not the "chosen one"). Well wasn't it the same for Rey, who had Sith blood running through her veins? I'm not defending the characters (it is lazy writing) but if you're going to complain about the females, you should also call out the males ones.

@@SaphireKancer90 Captain Marvel is different for Captain America because in Captain America, Steve Rogers actually deal with a lot of bullying and is a fleshed out character. We see his struggles and his great courage and compassion for his fellow youth when he jumped on a grenade. Steve had all the right qualities to be a hero it's just that Steve body limited him. This is proper character development, it gets us invested in the character and allows us to knows their strength and weaknesses. With a good character development you don't really need a character progression (character arch). Thor and Iron Man however do have character arches. The first Thor movie explores Thor without his powers and him learning humility, and to be worthy to get them back. Tony Stark had face great adversity to get to get his suit built and we see that. We see him learn to take responsibility for his actions. The problem with Captain Marvel is she remains the same character throughout the film. We never see her go through hardship in the movie. Her stoic attitude never changes and even though she does get a power up near the end it is made irrelevant because she remains the most powerful person in the film from beginning to end. While the other film make it fun and enjoyable to watch these character, Captain Marvel and now Mulan's story suck the joy out of film to push a political message. It might be different for sequel movies, but they can only get away with not further developing any of the original cast is if they move the brunt character development to the new cast that is being introduced, like in Captain America : The Winter Soldier. They can get away with this if they rap up the character's ark in the first film. It's not that strong female characters can't be a thing (Blackwidow), (Wonderwoman), but what disney film makers do more and more is that they aren't trying to create likable, compelling characters anymore. All I know now is that whoever is in charge making these movies is that what everfilmakers did this, is the best at making hollow, posionous, dumpster fire, of films.

And DCEU's Wonder Woman. You can even toss in Black Panther. These movies show a character that starts off so much better than everybody else and the only thing keeping them back is their own belief that their oppressors are keeping them down.

@rigatonipasta

@@RED_Theory038 So are you saying that since no other good movies came out this year that *my* point is invalid? People are never satisfied. When The Lion King came out people complained it was a shot for shot remake of the original without the songs. When Mulan comes out people complain it differs too much from the original and it doesn't have the songs. Here's the difference between Mulan and The Lion King. Mulan wasn't built around the songs. It never was. It's a war movie with amazing songs in it. Removing the songs from TLK compromised the movie. Removing the songs from Mulan is sad yes, but it doesn't ruin the movie if you view it from the perspective of the original Mulan story in Chinese legend. If people *listened* they'd hear beautiful reworkings of the original songs as part of the overall instrumental score. But people don't listen. So no. No other movies that came out this year can even compare to Mulan, the first Disney remake that actually tried something new. The only onscreen media that was released this year I have as much praise for is Star Wars The Clone Wars.
